Show of Hands if you think the CFP Committee is getting

Dec 1, 2021, 10:56 PM

ready to pull the old "Last Poll Switcheroo" and drop the Cincy Beercats to #5?

I think by keeping Bama at #3 despite how badly they struggled against Auburn, they are setting up to do just that.

? After what they did to TCU that one year, yes.***

If they do that again this year, there will be a revolt. Alabama probably has a top 10 team, but they should have lost to 2 unranked teams. They don't deserve to be in the top 4... they are not that good (at this point). Now if they beat Georgia, all of a sudden that changes, and they should be in.
That's why you play the game.

I agree, if you leave out the pac12 (not saying they deserve to be in), ACC (same as pac 12), and big12. ONly including the SEC champion and runner up and the big 10 champ and Cincy, things would not look good!

Dec 2, 2021, 8:38 AM [ in reply to Re: It was TCU AND Baylor that year. ]

I think TCU should have been #4, not OSU...

But in the defense CFP, I disagree with their decision but not their

TCU was NOT the undisputed "champion" of their conference. They would have lost the head-to-head tiebreaker to Baylor (they lost by 3 but gave up 61 points!). Baylor had a claim too but had a 14 point loss to West Virginia. Finally, you had OSU. Sure, they got a beatdown at home by a .500 level Virginia Tech team in their second game, had a few narrow wins, but ran away with the CCG.

So you had a:

Undisputed conference champ with a 14 point HOME loss
A disputed conference "champ" with a 14 AWAY loss
A 2nd place team with a 3 point AWAY loss.

Which would you pick?

Really, the B12 not awarding a conference "champ" torpedoed themselves. Naming Baylor "champ might have gotten themselves invited over OSU. Despite TCU being the best team, if they were picked over Baylor, folks would be raving over that snub because Baylor beat TCU. Basically the CFP picked the 3rd choice on a two-sided dilemma. However, TCU wasn't getting in... but they should not have been placed top 4 in the last week to drop out. That was a coot move.

A revolt from who? Cincinnati, Memphis, Boise State, and UCF? The lords and ladies in their castles must be terrified.

It is Baylor moving up to 9 that may get Cincinnati bounced. If the fighting Gundy’s beat another’ top 10 ‘ team and Cincy struggles with Houston, then the Bearcats may get TCU’d.

When Bama loses Saturday, they will only drop to Number 4. Got to have 2 SEC teams you know.

I had the exact same thought when I saw the rankings … however, The only problem with this “take” for the committee is that if Bama loses and they keep them in at 4 then they will have to turn around and play UGA again in the semis and I don’t think they have the stones to make that decision …and if they did and I was Kirby I would raise hell and I think the rest of the country will also!!! Just my take!!!

Years ago when TCU got trumped, there was no B12 championship game. A conf championship is a huge leg up in the eyes of the committee. Cinci will have that feather in their cap if they win this weekend.

If Bama beats UGA, they will both be in. UGA is a lock. Theyve nearly set a record as unanimous #1 in polls and a loss to Alabama won’t be enough to knock them to 5. Obviously if Bama wins they won’t drop, and may actually jump all the way to #1. UGA would be 3 and Cinci 4.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think the Bama wins scenario is exactly the one that gets

Dec 2, 2021, 8:00 AM

Cincy bounced. But, several other things have to happen.

1) Michigan wins Big 10 Championship, looks good doing so. 12-1 Power 5 Conference Champion - IN

2) The Fighting Gundys win Big 12 Championship in impressive fashion, 12-1 Power 5 Conference Champion - IN

3) Bama beats Georgia, SEC 12-1 Champion AND SEC 12-1 runner up. BOTH IN

That's four spots guys. No Bearcats in sight. The Committee will rate them a "Solid Number Five."
The Committee gave them something solid, alright, in that scenario.

So, even though the Committee has set themselves up this way, I have to believe that, behind the scenes, they are PRAYING that Georgia beats Bama, so they don't have to so overtly screw Cincy. A 2-loss Bama can't really make a case against an undefeated conference champ, even if it is not a Power 5, with the wins Cincy has.

Now, if Cincy somehow craps the bed in THEIR conference championship game, YEE HAW, Committee is off the hook altogether. Notre Dame probably buys their way in. It would serve Brian Kelly exactly right.

Re: I think the Bama wins scenario is exactly the one that gets

Dec 2, 2021, 11:36 AM

I don't disagree with your thinking but there is one problem...

ND at #6. If Cincy did not beat ND, the domers would be IN the playoffs again. Cincy has the better win vs a potential playoff team (basically for ND to get in they need every other 1 loss team to lose - Mich, OkState, Bama etc). In any situation, IF any 1 loss team loses. ND would be the #5 seed and you can't push ND past Cincy. So I am thinking Ok State would be more likely to get SECrewed than Cincy

Plus, there have been other 1 loss non-champs that were not included. 12-1 Wiconsin and Iowa come to mind. Only ND got the nod last year and they included a 6 win team.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If Bama loses, they're out. If they win, they're in. Simple as that***

Best Is The Standard

Unless you get chaos everywhere else. If Michigan, Okie St,

Dec 2, 2021, 8:26 AM

and Cincy ALL lose, then you have a whole bunch of two loss teams vying for spots. (Cincy would be done in that scenario, they ain't getting in.) The committee would be just as likely to pick a two loss Bama as they would any other two loss team out there. Call it The Saban Factor, built up credit, SEC bias, anything you want, but it could certainly happen that way if chaos finally happens.

The way the rest of this year has gone, this could be the year that Chaos finally shows up.

On the other hand, I don't think Cincy is even a top 10 ten team.

Dec 2, 2021, 8:13 AM

Bama upsets Georgia , the rest follow ######.

1. Mich
2. Bama
3. Cinc
4. Ga
5. Ok St

Gotta have that E$ecPN payday and keep them from facing again till the Ch.
Keeps Ok St from beating the $ec teams.
And puts the undefeated team on the hardest path.

No way. Ok St would jump Cincy. Ok St would have back to back wins that are just as good as Cincy's only good win (ND). UGA would likely stay ahead of Cincy, unless they moved them at 4 to avoid the immediate rematch with Bama. Or they could move Bama to #1 over Michigan.

Cincy's worst nightmare right now is a Bama win combined with Ok St and Michigan wins.

Re: Here's the set up they have in mind....

Dec 2, 2021, 11:53 AM

Maybe????

If Bama beats Jawja, would Meechigan or Bama be #1. I think Bama.

Meechan would be #2

#3 would be... OkState IMO. As you said, recent top 10 wins. only loss would be a late 4th qtr loss to ISU by 3 on the road.

#4 would be Jawja vs Cincy. Thus an immediate rematch? I kinda doubt it.

Would they keep Jawja to #2/3 to avoid a rematch? That is as long as Meechican is #2.

Other than beating a decent SMU team, who else have the Bearcats beaten?
Just not sold on Cincy. Alabama obviously isn't the same this year but would still run
all over them IMHO.

#6 Notre Dame in South Bend.

ND would be in if they won. Heck, they have a very outside chance of making it still. Needs a lot of 1 loss upsets to happen, but they still have a shot.

Wherever ND "lands" Cincy (if they win) will be at least one spot up. If ND lands at #5, Cincy is in if they win.

Unlike previous AAC options (ie UCF), they never beat a Power5+ND playoff contender during their season. Cincy has that *win*. UCF's best wins were only top 25 (later unranked) teams.

Thus I think Cincy is in if they win.

I think the more interesting discussion is Ok State vs a 1 loss Jawja.
