Here’s hoping Joe Burrow = Vinnie Testaverde 1986

Dec 30, 2019, 1:48 AM

One of the reasons I think we all love college football so much is that it truly is hard to predict 18 to 22-year-old male will do on any given night.

Joe Burrow has had a great college football season. Unprecedented numbers. Surrounded by NFL talent on both sides of the ball.

Older people on this board will remember the 1986 Fiesta Bowl national championship game between the university of Miami hurricanes and Penn State whose defense was under the direction of the now unmentionable coach.

Vinny Testaverde, Michael Irvin, Alonso Highsmith, Benny Blades, Perriman and other future NFL stars arrived in the desert wearing fatigues. Hardly any reason to play the game. UM was going to score 7 or 8 TD’s by the first half. UM had already demolished #1 ranked Oklahoma, Florida, Florida State, Pitt. Arrogant and super talented were they.

Testaverde managed to throw five interceptions in route to a 14 to 10 loss where they outgained Penn State 3 to 1 in yards but could not score. The great Miami team lost.

LSU players and coaches do not appear to be arrogant. But the players are young men and Brent Venables says hello. Great challenge ahead for Clemson, but very manageable despite what the Oklahoma debacle might suggest.

Vinny and Joe Burrow are very different from each other.

1. Vinny was a workout warrior who lifted weights like a lineman. There probably won't be another legit QB quite like him, ever.

2. (more relevant) Vinny was not the sharpest tool in the shed. Burrow is a very smart guy. It is theoretically possible Burrow completely melts down against us like Vinny did against Penn State. The likelihood is so remote it's an incredible reach to even bring it up.

That is Vinny in retrospect. He turned out to be a very bad quarterback in the most important college game of his life. He turned out to be a very poor professional quarterback, although it was a long career. But at the time he was the man who followed the man at UM. His predecessors Jim Kelly and Bernie Kosar handed him the keys. He did not get exposed at Oklahoma, Florida state, Florida, etc that year. He got exposed against Penn state.

Joe Burrow and LSU appear invincible now. Here’s hoping they get exposed in two weeks.

I remember Tennessee rushing Vinne with all 11.

That messed his head up.
