Here you go Jim Phillips...The way to fix the ACC....long

Jul 2, 2022, 12:18 PM

Three things MUST be done at once:

1 - Replace equal revenue sharing with a model based on each teams valuation (contribution to the ACC overall value - let's face it that's mostly football value)

2 - Add Notre Dame as a full member by paying them commensurate to the value they bring

3 - Renegotiate the ACC deal - Get a minimum of 20% increase for the undervalued deal (currently $500,000,000), and get a minimum of an additional 28% bump for addition of Notre Dame. Arguably, Notre Dame is like adding 4-5 "typical ACC teams" on a dollar value basis. This negotiation would increase the ACC deal to $740,000,000 total.

Equal revenue sharing is great for the NFL, but NOT great for college conferences! Parity is actually not good in college football for a conference - que up Reece Davis and the "ACC Wheel of destiny!" Successful college conferences need 1-3 top teams with the ability to compete nationally. Equal revenue sharing spits in the face of what is successful in college football. Must get rid of it for the ACC to be successful and stable.

Given the above numbers, and using average football game viewership as the "team value" metric, Notre Dame would bring in $150,000,000 annually in the ACC. That's $50 million more than the B1G could pay them, and I believe would be enough to entice membership. Clemson would bring in $111 million, FSU $92 million, Miami $62 million, VA Tech $52 mil, Louisville $50 mil, Pitt $32 mil, UNC $31 mil, NCSU $29 mil, Syracuse $29 mil, GA Tech $25 mil, UVA $24 mil, Duke $17 mil, BC $17 mil, Wake $16 mil. Obviously the economic metric would be based on a scientific, unbiased study to determine relative team/school value. I am just using the football viewership reports to give a really rough idea of how it might fall out. It's probably not that far off reality. This team value system approach would be built into the Grant of Rights too, making it very tough for top teams to leave, but easier for bottom, under-performing teams. It would promote excellence in the conference.

The big protest about this would be by the 9 teams which would make less than the current $35 million payout. If you wanted to keep some element of social justice at play, you could proportionally skim enough from the top teams to pay for keeping the bottom 9 status quo at the current $35 million payout. That would reduce the top teams annual payout as follows: Notre Dame $131 million, Clemson $97 million, FSU $81 million, Miami $54 million, VA Tech $46 mil, Louisville $44 mil. The rest get $35 million.

For starters, the AD's wouldn't agree to it.

ND is NOT joining a sinking ship.

TV money - they'd laugh at renegotiating any contract unless they negotiate a lesser deal, which I see is a real possibility. No market. Clemson/WAKE Don't move the needle. You'd get more viewership with coots/Oklahoma.

As soon as Texas and Oklahoma announced SEC, we (Clemson) should have been on the phone to either B1G or SEC. We act like we're some national brand and can command money and respect like ND. Sadly, we're not.

ESPN HAS to renegotiate if we add a team. It’s in the current contact.

Yeah, but like he says, they don't have to renegotiate for more.

At one time I would agree with you, but we are a national brand now due to Dabo and the success with football. If that is not the case then why does every good high school football player ( whether they commit or not) always say they covet the Clemson offer and kids as far away as California say it is one of their dream schools? I say if we are going to jump why not now why the iron is hot?

I agree with your first comment. Phillips would need to be the ACC Czar for a day, and have the guts to pull the trigger.

But... if the team valuation method I suggest was implemented, the ACC would NOT be a sinking ship! The top teams would be pulling in payouts equal to or exceeding the B1G and SEC. Notre Dame would be pulling in over 50% more than the B1G could offer them.

The renegotiations on TV deal should be relatively easy. Notre Dame is a huge add and the current contract is woefully undervalued when compared with other conferences. Notre Dame averages over 4 million viewers for every game! That is like a bigtime SEC game every game they play, even when they play Navy! People have no clue the value of their addition to the conference. Don't get me wrong. I don't care for ND, but I do recognize their value.

The ACC would NOT be a sinking ship. With ND, Clemson, Miami (on the rise), FSU, VA Tech, and you'd always have some of the $35 million group like NCSU, UNC, or GA Tech stepping up as solid teams. The ACC could add other teams but I don't think with Notre Dame they would need to.

Great idea, but, but, but Basketball!

You would be a great salesman to pull your second proposal split off, but it works….
Wake, Duke and others have done well sharing the Bowl revenue for years…

Makes too much sense to work.

I doubt we are long for the ACC, and will end up in the SEC along with FSU and Miami to balance Texas, Oklahoma…..

Jul 2, 2022, 12:59 PM

That’s a solution akin to hoping bags of money fall out of the sky. A lot of hope, not much in the way of reality.

Here is how Phillips can save the conference with a few phone calls:

Call Klavikoff, merge the intact remains of the PAC-12 and the ACC to form a single, bi-coastal conference. This opens up the ACC’s ability to negotiate just as the PAC-12 is negotiating their own deal. Go grab the best of what’s left of the Big 12, probably Oklahoma State and one other school. Keep competition to each school’s respective coast, with an occasional trip west or east.

This solves your problems. You have a relevant conference, perhaps not as strong as the SEC or B1G, but formidable nonetheless. It fixes our financial problems. Maybe best of all, it puts USC and UCLA on an island.

It can be done, but we need these two commissioners to get it done quickly, and I don’t have a lot of faith in that happening.

I love your idea and have actually thought of this. Have an Atlantic Division and a Pacific Division. The conference championship would be a "battle of the coasts!" I have thought of this idea and love it, but it seems to me the current ACC would almost need to shed some bad teams teams to balance things out?

You are 100% correct in that this idea is probably more realistically implemented. +1

Re: Here you go Jim Phillips...The way to fix the ACC....long

Jul 2, 2022, 1:07 PM

And with your idea they still need to go hard for Notre Dame and renegotiate TV deals. Your idea also incorporates 2 of my three main suggestions. I still say the revenue sharing needs adjustment but is probably a bigger hurdle to implement.

You go hard for ND and while your chances of landing them are slim, they improve exponentially with a PAC-12 merger.

Re: Here you go Jim Phillips...The way to fix the ACC....long

Jul 2, 2022, 1:16 PM

Yep. And the PAC-12 media deal is up for renegotiation soon. The merger would be the perfect justification for scrapping the current crappy ACC deal and starting anew. This idea would've been golden with USC and UCLA still in the PAC.

Jul 2, 2022, 1:18 PM

Yeppp. The problem is that Phillips is content with our dwarfed income as long as there is stability. That is not a forward-thinking approach.

And we'd be the afterthoughts, the Little Brother. Pac12 has been left out of the CFP how many times now? We already get a bum rap for playing weak ACC foes. How does winning the East ACC and then beating the West (reduced Pac12) get us anywhere? It's also a strong possibility that the larger SEC and Big10 don't schedule many games out of conference. Currently most of our SOS comes from SEC and ND.

Hahaha, the irony is lost on you…we’ve been playing in the ACC for the past seven years and have gone to the Playoff six times- exactly the situation you just described. Furthermore, the CFP is going to expand anyway.

Re: Here you go Jim Phillips...The way to fix the ACC....long

Jul 2, 2022, 2:13 PM

Nothing being lost on me. In the CFP era there have been 5 conferences. Which one gets left out every time except for the first year? Pac12. Last season who got left out? Pac12, ACC and Big 12. Year before? Pac 12, Big12. My point is that adding leftover schools from the Pac12 does nothing to enhance the ACC. If we're trending towards megaconferences then staying the big fish in an increasingly smaller pond should not be our goal. With the Power 5 conferences the ACC still had a seat at the table. Two mega conferences and a couple secondary conferences? Our seat will be at the kids table.

Washington, Oregon, Stanford, Arizona, ASU, Utah, Colorado…Those are hardly “leftovers”. They aren’t the marquee brands of say, Texas or USC, but they’re enough to save the ACC’s hide.

ACC would have tons of teams leaving if the commissioner started assigning an arbitrary value

Jul 2, 2022, 1:20 PM

to each member.

While I get your point that it helps Clemson, it hurts many of the other schools.

What happens if we start to stink at sports and aren’t bringing in as much for the conference? Would you be okay with us getting less?

Jul 2, 2022, 1:31 PM

JK- Yes, I would be okay with us getting what we deserve based off an unbiased, comprehensive economic study of the value we add to the conference. I am not suggesting an "arbitrary" split. The example I used was strictly for the purpose of giving an example.

If it was determined that UNC and Duke get equal revenue share with us because their BBall/March Madness values, I'd be fine with that. It should be based on an economic valuation of each team/school's contribution to the conference. If we slide into mediocrity and start having 30,000 fans show up for football games, let facilities run down, then yes I'd be fine with our lessor cut.

And...in my second example it doesn't hurt other schools over the status quo. It may hurt their competitive status with conference foes who get more.

Screw trying to determine a teams worth by trying to calculate intangibles. Make their pay 100% performance based by # of wins in conference, out of conference wins (power ? Conferences ever how many there ends up being) and bowl game performance (wins).

I wouldn't give the ACC bottom dwellers anywhere near $35 million until they meet performance expectations set by conference ADs and HCs. And ND would never get paid more conference money than Clemson until they can win 2 modern day Nattys in 4 years. Don't care how many alumni they have - performance based incentive.
