Here is why Venables gets paid 2M a year, and I don't.

Nov 1, 2021, 4:09 PM

I didn't get to watch the game. And, even if I did, I wouldn't have understood the chess match between Venables and the FSU coaches.

But, I listened to Kenny Dillingham's presser today. I was shocked.

I told y'all last week that the way to beat FSU was to stop the run. Venables did that. I assumed the way he did it was to load the box, stuff the run, and force Jordan to throw the ball. Our top two RB's only ran the ball a combined 14 times. That further solidified my thinking that Clemson played morst of the game with 7 or 8 guys in the box and sending 5 or more on virtually every play.

Man, was I wrong.

Dillingham explained that Clemson normally had three down linemen and had two guys spying Jordan (QB) on nearly every play. He said Clemson dropped back and played zone virtually the whole game. Clearly it worked.

I have no idea how he managed to get a game plan to shut down the run with that scheme. Dillingham talked about how he schemed so that he was doing so many differnet things with the line and would "show pressure" and it confused the OL. But, at any rate, if you had told me before the game that Clemson would run a 3-3-5 most of the game I would have said FSU would get 250 yards rushing.

Shows what I know. That's why Venables is the best DC in the country. He is the equal to what Mickey Anderews was in the 90's at FSU. (For those of you who don't know who Andrews was, just let me say this: For an FSU fan to compare anyone to Mickey Andrews is the highest praise that could be given.)

And as good as Coach V is he couldn’t even get a word in on that last FSU Time Out .
The most important play of the game and Dabo was standing in front of him talking to the D. I just laughed

Because Dabo is Brent's boss and makes $6 million per year.

6?

Clearly you should be taken very seriously as a real and knowledgeable Clemson fan.

No…it’s a control thing. He is the head coach, so there is that, but I think he has issues with delegation.

Venables and Dabo are like best friends. You need another team bro.

I am not too sure about that. The camera has caught Dabo being very 'animated' at Venables and Reed several times this year. Coach V was visibly upset trying to get the call in while Dabo is in his ear. Reed looked like he was going to step across the line and sock Dabo in the nose.

It was not a good look at all because without the defense Dabo would be in a heap of trouble.

Coach Venables didn't need to say anything to his men. His men knew their roles and responsibilities. Dabo was not coaching X's and O's at that point; he was offering encouragement in one form or another.

You guys ran it well enough on us in the 1st half that BV switched to some 4 down linemen looks. Your QB also did a good job of picking apart the zone based on matchups on several occasions, even vs 8 in coverage. All-in-all I thought FSU played super competitive game, huge improvements this season. I think the winter of FSU's discontent is coming to an end.

He didn't switch to a 4 down front to stop the run.

He did it to more effectively rush the passer.

As stated above, FSU's RBs on got 14 total carries. FSU abandoned their normal gameplan when it wasn't working.

Clemson DTs were having more success rushing the passer than the extra LB coming in so Venables tossed some 4 DL looks to push the pocket backwards from the middle.

All-in-all Clemson's DL dominated FSU OL and so adding an extra heavy rusher as the game went on created more havoc for FSU's QB and also allowed for more diversity in twisting and stunting to beat the OL instead of having to send more rushers with blitzes.

Ruke was the key to this strategy for Clemson because he is athletic enough to chase the QB like a DE at 300 lbs. He was a major problem for FSU this past Saturday!

If I've been reading our D correctly from a TV view, we've run a 3-3-5 quite often. It sometimes morphs into a 3-4-4. And sometimes the 5th guy in the secondary walks up to make it a 3-5-4 or a 4-3-4. Venables doesn't really use much in the way of standard defensive alignments... instead, he puts his players in positions to create mismatches and confusion - and they often show one thing pre-snap and move right into another post-snap. For my money, the guy is the best in the business.

Thanks. I was over simplifying when I said 3-3-5.

One of the things that makes Venables so great is his ability to have athletes on the field that can morph into different positions: Safety can be OLB. OLB can be DE. DE can be OLB, etc. (And, Isaiah Simmons could play anywhere.)

Anyway, from the best I could tell from listening to our OC (and his explanations were far too complex for me to grasp) Venables devised a scheme that allowed him to shut down the run but still keep our QB from scrambling and making big plays on busted plays, AND control the passing game.

And, he did it without loading the box. THAT is what shocked me.

It's worse than that. It was mostly a 3-2-6, whether it was

linebacker Simpson/Carter playing back off a tight end or an additional safety or corner. They would blitz off the edge depending on the formation with one of the "6" as well as linebackers. Seemed to allow Clemson to cover the WR screens as well as crash on the run.
