The Super-Coastal Conference

Jul 30, 2022, 3:23 PM

Give me a minute to lay this out in all of it's Brilliance.

1. The ACC and the Pac-12 join together. Notre Dame joins to get in on the strength of this Super-conference !

2. The Pac-12 attracts some other West coast Teams to balance out the numbers (15 teams for each Division - East & West). I am thinking of Boise State, San Diego State, BYU, Utah State, Fresno State, Air Force.

3. Thjis allows the new Super-Coastal Conference to be Very Very Attractive to the major television bidders because they can have Super-Coastal Conference games scheduled ALL DAY LONG !

4. Each team plays 9 division games to determine who is the division champion. The other 3 games can be in or out of conference. This keeps travel days and expenses down to a reasonable level. The Super-Coastal Conference Championship is then played in some huge stadium in the middle of the country - Huge TV ratings.

5. A conference like this could easily support two entries into the College Football Playoffs - even more when the CFP expands.

This Super-Coastal Conference would be NATIONWIDE - in TV audiences, in branding, in recruiting, in merchandise rights, etc. The money would come pouring in and leave the rest of the conferences scrambling after us for a change.

If we’re not in the SEC, do you want to go around saying we’re in the SCC?

I just proposed a way that Clemson and the ACC can remain competitive in the shifting scene of college sports - and you're worried about the initials ??

Your idea is so awful it's funny

Jul 30, 2022, 3:56 PM

A better name for what you describe is the "Big Mess" conference.

This scenario allows each existing conference to function pretty much as it already does, but doubles the size, clout, revenues, etc. It allows the ACC to compete with the strongest conferences in the country, while maintaining most of its existing culture.

Here is what you are missing

Jul 30, 2022, 4:57 PM

Revenue is on a per school basis. Adding Boise State, Utah State, Fresno State, Air Force, etc would dilute value severely and hose Clemson, Oregon, UW and others. It would be suicidal and has no chance of happening. This is why bigger isn't necessarily better. Your suggestions prove bigger can be much worse.

Why? Nobody gives a care about watching those additional schools on TV which is why your "Super-Coastal Conference" would not be attractive to TV networks. Doubling size does NOT double revenue in your scenario.

The last sentence of your OP leaves me speechless.

Very good discussion. Every viewpoint is valid; I just disagree with yours.

Agreed. Leave the Group of Five schools to the Junior league Big 12.

The only times this supposed super coastal conference championship would draw millions and millions of viewers is if its Oregon vs Clemson, Oregon vs Miami or Oregon vs FSU.

Last year it would've been Pitt vs Utah and no one would've watched it. Heck no one would've attended it if it were played "in the middle" of the country (I'm guessing at Kansas City's football stadium).

The first (new or existing) Conference to get to 30 current Power 5 teams of which 3 of those teams have been in a CFP wins the race.

I mean the SEC and BIG 10 already won in that case Bama, LSU, UGA. The rest are tied at 2 except the Big12 with 1. ACC Clemson, FSU, PAC 10/12, Oregon, Washington, BIG 10 OSU, Mich, Mich state

Re: The Super-Coastal Conference

That is very true. Currently the B1G and SEC have 3 teams each that have been in the CFP and SEC will be at 4 when Oklahoma starts conference play. But they only have 16 teams. If a new Conference comes together with Clemson, FSU and Washington that's 3 CFP teams and all they need to do is get to the 30 team total. I would actually like to see 32 teams with four 8 team divisions.

What do you think happens in 5 or 10 years if Clemson and the ACC just stand pat ?

The ACC is going to dissolve within a year.

The GOR appears to be a maximum security prison that is very difficult to escape from. It will hold the conference together at least another year or two, maybe much longer.

Some sort of collaboration needs to be plan A or B. I'm tired of hearing about academics and like minded institutions too.. Work with who adds value.

The strength of contract can now only be increased by elimination. But the conference won’t go there.
They could at least give the leaches an ultimatum. Build a competitive f.b. team or be dropped. The conference needs to stop aiding perpetual bidding dwellers. 12 teams would be a smaller contract divider, especially if Oklahoma State and Baylor were part of the twelve.

1) ND wouldn't join that
2) Ewwwwww
3) Disagree
4) This is as bad as playing champ game in Vegas (prior rumor)
5) Agreed. But $$$ disparity would still be HUGE

This wouldn't create the $$$ windfall you suggest. Just wouldn't

I like that idea because we would still be a dog, not like a middle of the pack in the SEC. Some good rotation system would have to be set up and for all sports, the divisions would have to be a separate entity because a 30 team conference is a non-starter. Unless the Playoffs expand, it would not be a 2 team conference by any stretch.
