Herbstreet was right about one thing ...

Oct 4, 2015, 10:26 AM

Clemson needs to stop going into victory formation with 10 minutes left in the game.

Way too conservative in the 4th with a lead .... no killer instinct.

So we should have made risky plays that could have turned the ball over?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There are various other ways to run the ball of course.**

Don't think OP was at the game last night.

I was absolutely drenched. Imagine jumping in a pool with your clothes on and standing in it for hours. Yeah...

Exactly. If it happens in sunny weather, then I might worry.

Re: Herbstreet was right about one thing ...

Oct 4, 2015, 10:33 AM

I agreed with the strategy. What puzzled me is why we were running the QB on 3rd and long when we had a couple good RBs that didn't get a single touch last night. Gallman ran great last night, but he was gassed by the middle of the 4th quarter. A change of pace might have helped win a couple of those first downs.

Nobody can read the D as good as Watson

Oct 4, 2015, 10:50 AM

he's a smart runner. I like our chances him with the ball on third down with the field spread

The probability of a fumble during a hand-off was...

Oct 4, 2015, 12:42 PM [ in reply to Re: Herbstreet was right about one thing ... ]

reduced to almost nothing. Wayne was a work horse but he's also human. Watson is good at handing the ball off to anybody but he's almost human. :)

The reward was lower but the risk of a turnover was almost non-existent. ND had several turnovers due to the game situation and weather. 2+2=4

Oct 4, 2015, 10:42 AM

Meh. We threw the ball into the end zone twice with big leads. One Peake acted like he didn't want the ball and the other was a game clincher that Scott couldn't haul in. We took our shots.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Herbstreet was right about one thing ...

Oct 4, 2015, 10:44 AM

IIRC, the Scott drop was early in the third and the interception was at the end of the third. We went super conservative with nine minutes left.

Re: Herbstreet was right about one thing ...

Oct 4, 2015, 10:43 AM

I don't mind calling a lot of low-risk plays there, but the play-calling was too vanilla. It seemed like Gallman got the ball on every 1st and 10 and we were consistently putting the offense in 2nd and 3rd and longs. I think we should have mixed it up and gone deeper into the playbook. All of those short drives certainly didn't do our defense any favors.

Re: Herbstreet was right about one thing ...

Oct 4, 2015, 12:09 PM

I don't disagree with the offensive play calling but my gosh why do we go into a prevent all the time on defense! Their QB was killing us when we gave him time. Our DB's can't cover guys forever. Kizer was killing us when he had time. Rushing three almost guarenteed he would have time. The announcers said over and over that the only way he makes the throws he makes is if he has a lot of time so they can develop. We did the same thing against Louisville and against GA a few years ago. I think it gassed our d-line much faster too.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'd agree...

Oct 4, 2015, 12:33 PM

but then three of us would be wrong.

You couldn't be more wrong with that statement. What you saw was a classic display of Bear Bryant football. "Defense wins championships." That statement doesn't need a qualifier, it means you win each and every game with defense.

Considering that traditional philosophy with the stead downpour that covered the local region during the second half which made turnovers likely, the lead we had and we had a game situation that demanded we run the ball and work the clock.

Move on from Chad Morris' obstinacy and move into an engineer's (Tony's) heavy analytical skill and come to grips with another ten win season and a team who is in complete control of it's destiny.

CT1988 , you make way too much sense to be posting on this board . It's obvious to some of us that there was a total plan for this one , and it included WINNING THE. FRIGGIN. GAME .

The difference is that when Dabo does it, it works.

We didn't lose. And that's become pretty routine.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Get out of here, we have won more big games under Dabo...

Oct 4, 2015, 12:53 PM [ in reply to It's the Clemson way, Bowden did it and Dabo continues ]

in one season, than Tommy Bowden did his whole career. Oh, by the way the oline has to create passing lanes for the passing game to be effective. If Watson has to roll out to see his receivers, that leaves one side of the field to pass the ball.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree with Herbie......why not continue to play the way that

Oct 4, 2015, 12:51 PM

got you the lead. I like our commitment to the run, but you have to continue to mix it up with a few passes on early downs. It is nice to be able to learn from your mistakes Fter a win! Hopefully, our O coordinators will continue to grow and learn.....from wins!

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The oline didn't pass block as well as they did those first

Oct 4, 2015, 12:55 PM

two drives. Watson had no passing lanes inside the pocket after those two drives, for most of the game.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Notre Dame made adjustments to counter the way

Oct 4, 2015, 1:09 PM [ in reply to Agree with Herbie......why not continue to play the way that ]

we were playing when we got the lead.

We got the lead largely because we got a nice KO return and then ran Deshaun early ... something we had not done to that point and caught ND flat-footed.

A lot of what we did early caught ND off guard and gave us a cushion.

But they are a very talented team that is well-coached and they settled down and began playing solid ball.
