Y’all are jumping to conclusions. If he was there for only an hour and did 18 shots you might have a point. He was probably there for a few hours though.

Seen someone? Of course. I did it my self probably twice a week at that age. It also said he consumed other mixed drinks. Depending on what he ordered, the drinks could have sobered him like you would from drinking Miller Lites in between shots.
Top Golf requires lots of standing and exercise. I’m not saying he wasn’t feeling it. I’m just saying that it may not have been a big deal if he was pounding some of their pulled pork sliders and chicken strips the whole time.

about drinking that much at that age...you can really hold it and still function somewhat normally (at least in terms of mostly knowing what you are doing) but make no mistake your BAC was probably way over any legal limit.
It also sounds like he may have just been at the Top Golf bar. I dont know about Vegas but a couple of the others I've been too (Nashville and Phoenix) have huge bars where you can just sit and hang out...no activity involved.
Im hesitant to blame the establishments for something like this but when you over serve customers at such a level then dont do anything when they leave...you are partly responsible for what happened. If the bartender/manager used better judgement then they could have at least arranged travel for him or called the police if he gets in his car. Sadly, he's a pro athlete who probably paid a lot of money so you look the other way. Im sure he was showing off for the girl.
This is also a good reminder for everyone that if you do drink and get behind the wheel, you are taking on a lot of risk and ultimately the possibility of killing someone. I used to think it was no big deal but its a serious reminder. As others said, its really only a couple of drinks and there you are...barely buzzed but drunk in the eyes of the law and completely liable for whatever happens.

Anyone who actually says drinking a beer between shots will “sober him” is not worth my time. A truly ignorant thing to say.
Alcoholics say things like that to justify their alcoholism.
Feeling drunk and being legally drunk are 2 totally different things.

Really? All this time I’ve been thinking that admitting that I #### my pants on a walk with my girlfriend was the dumbest thing I ever posted on TigerNet.
Miller Lite is over 90% water and only like 1% alcohol. Unless you’re a Clydesdale, your stomach isn’t big enough to get really drunk off it. We literally drink it to stay hydrated on hot days during the summer.
I realize that this isn’t a cash award, but can I least have a certificate or something to mark my achievement?

That 12 oz Miller Lite has 4% alcohol, or about 14 grams of pure alcohol. That one watery beer is equal to a straight shot of 80 proof liquor, which also has about 14 grams of pure alcohol. You may not feel like that crappy beer is getting you drunk, but I assure you your BAC says different.
You keep one-upping yourself on the ignoramus scale…

I’ve heard of food poisoning too, but I still eat. I agree about Riggs. My comments are directed to the fact that Top Golf likely didn’t do anything wrong. If we shut down every bar that limited customers to less than 18 drinks, we wouldn’t have any bars left.

If a bar is serving 18 drinks to a single person in a single evening, that deserve to be shut down. For real. You can’t defend this without abolishing all alcohol related laws. If authorities find that a bar is over serving like that, they lose their license.
It’s not like they are hanging out at home and have nowhere to drive…this is on site consumption.

I don’t get it. Just because you can get alcohol poisoning doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t drink. Let me guess, you’re one of those guys who won’t wash down a pill with a beer if the prescription says not to mix with alcohol.

It means you shouldn’t drink enough to get alcohol poisoning. It is directly related to quantity consumed. Food poisoning is completely different. Has nothing to do with volume consumed. And if I’m feeling bad enough that I went to the doctor and got a prescription I’m probably not drinking.

I’m no rocket surgeon, but I’m guessing that the odds of getting food poisoning from eating a dozen three week old chicken wings and a McDonalds cheeseburger that sat out over night is higher than if I had only eaten one of the wings. I’m pretty sure volume played a factor.
Maybe a doctor on the board can confirm.

As far as BAC is concerned, he would have the reported 0.161 at 8 drinks in 1 hour. Over time, you subtract 0.015 after each hour. But, you have to add 0.02 for every additional drink.
There’s no way he had that many shots if he had a BAC of 0.161.

Also, a lot of people don’t realize how few drinks it takes to put you over the legal limit.
For Ruggs, at 190 lbs, he would be legally drunk on his 4th drink of the hour. If he consumed one more drink per hour after that, he would remain legally drunk until one hour after stopping.

It looks like the bartender knew Ruggs went to school at Alabama. They were probably giving him shots of water telling him it was some high price ultra smooth vodka. I used to do that to college girls if they were annoying when friends brought them to one of my parties. I bet half of my take came from water or heavily diluted booze.

Per drink, at 190 lbs, you add 0.02 for every drink. For every hour you don’t have a drink after that, you go down 0.015 for every hour.
He could have been there for 18 hours (net BAC increase of 0.005 per hour) having one drink per hour and still been over the legal limit at hour 19.
If he got there at 2 pm and had 18 drinks he would most definitely still be over the limit at 4am…

"There’s no way he had that many shots if he had a BAC of 0.161."
He absolutely could have - it has to do with the time he started which if he started in the afternoon like I indicated around 2 it would be around that BAC (again that is using your math regarding the per drink/per hour etc)

Friends bought me a total of 8 or 9 shots that evening over about 3 hours (had a few beers in between)
I was D.A.F by the end of the evening. No way I could drive, I could hardly walk. Ruggs is 190 lbs - so was I.
This guy was definitively FUUUUUUUUUUUCT UP.

My older half brother used to sell fake ID’s. Every year for my birthday, he’d give me a new ID with the year adjusted to show I just turned 21 starting with my 16th. Had nights like yours for each of my 21st birthdays. I’m not bragging, but those were rookie numbers by my 18th.

That’s not how it works. The beers in between are designed to hydrate you and keep you from having any hangover at all. If you get too ambitious on the shots, the bloating from the beer also makes it easier to throw up so you can get back in party mode. Either way, you come out a winner.
I feel like back in junior high having to explain this to sixth graders. Are you really that upset about not knowing light beer can be used to sober up or are you just yanking my chain?

Time to get this back on track to football talk. How many shots do you think Ruggs would have to drink before you could beat him in a 40 yard dash?

Even if he had not had a drop of alcohol, how irresponsible to be driving 156 mph on the city streets!!! I know he’s young and living his dream but that is not an excuse to endanger other people. No matter how much he drank or who sold it to him he and his girlfriend made a horrible choice that cost an innocent woman her life!!

Who cares about Ruggs. Prison time and wasted his career and life. Now he has a lot more reasons to drink.

He committed a terrible crime he’ll pay for, for the rest of his life. People make mistakes, big and small. That’s what the judicial system is for.

Did he even take a breathalyzer?

I think it's more likely that they got his BAC from a blood test at the hospital which may have been up to an hour after the crash.
