I believe mental health issues will be caused by the increased pressures on student athletes to perform at an elite level because of NIL deals and the amount of money kids could make, the TP and the increased pressure to win. Those so called NIL deals and booster’s getting to involved financially are going to expect some bang for their buck. Will Mental Illness be the next major problem that could sideline players more than any other health issues. My concern is are the coaches experienced enough to pick up on a kid who is at their breaking point.
Think about a 19 year old earring $5 million. Most of these kids are not equipped to manage that kind of money. And just think of the increase to be successful on the field every play every game as well as rack up the W’s.
Are student athletes being push to their mental breaking point. ???

the sudden availability of such amounts of money making a lot of players lose control of the discipline that got them where they were to earn a scholarship. If rules aren’t put in to prevent schools from paying up front to get them on campus, what will keep them from taking even more money to transfer to the next school? Four schools in four years with payouts each year will become a real possibility

some will certainly find the money creates more temptation than they have the discipline to handle and they will suffer for it. But its the world we live in now. Hopefully the schools or the ncaa or some entity will see they have access to reasonably altruistic advisors.

I believe the coaches and staff have training and will be able see signs. The question is will it be soon enough to ensure help and treatment. The ones who know first will be their teammates, roommates and friends. Will they speak up early?
I know for a fact what happens when friends and co-workers know and say nothing. Any changes and concerns need to be elevated for help ASAP.

Excellent points saddis56! I just hope I am wrong. My nephew committed suicide when he was 24. He was in counseling and he did not see it. Money changes people. Some people cannot handle the major changes.
OSU’s starting center stepped away from football due to mental health issues. I don’t think anyone has a complete on how NIL will change coaching or student athletes. The NCAA does not have a clue about anything. They are 10 to 15 years behind all of the current change’s.

At 19, I would have definitely made a lot of fun choices, most likely in now way resembling the right choices.
Sad thing is, a 19 yr old who gets 2 million, and gets with the right investor could probably never have to do another days work he didn’t want to do.
Unfortunately, we probably know that will be the exception

They will get use to it 15 states now allow NIL in high Schools. Plus there isn't as much financial pressure of not having money or getting it paid illegally from boosters.. It works both ways lol.
