Heisman Trophy is a joke...a popularity contest

Dec 10, 2019, 10:30 AM

until they revamp the voting process it will remain a joke. They need a Heisman committee (no media) that votes after the NCG...duh. Only reason it is relevant is the Nissan Heisman House commercials.

Yup, an award in December for the best player on October. DW4 is the best case example for the problem with the award.

Not worried, you can be a TERRIBLE football program and still win it... but it takes a team to hoist the trophy.

What are you complaining about? Who do you think got snubbed? Burrow's stats are unreal this season he deserves to win it all.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Who got snubbed? #16, #9, #11 ...so you believe

Dec 10, 2019, 12:03 PM

the Heisman should go to whoever has the best stats after the conference championships and the CFP games should have no bearing? If the season had ended this past weekend I agree with you. If JB wins the NC he should win the Heisman.

The Heisman is (supposed to be) awarded annually to the most outstanding player in NCAA football. How can that be determined before the season concludes? Also, other than JB, our guys are just as deserving as the other 3 of a trip to NY.

Main point is get the media out of the voting and decide after the last meaningful football game.

I vividly remember back in 2009 when we were all upset that the award seemed to only go to the best player on one of the best teams. We were all arguing then that a player shouldn't have to typically be on a top 5 or top 10 team to win the award. Are we now saying that the best player on the best team should indeed always win it?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It'll always be a media popularity contest...

Dec 10, 2019, 10:41 AM

but no denying Burrow deserves it this year. His stats are absurd and they are the #1 team in the country. There may very well be a better player or two and certainly a better pro but thats not what its about either.

You have to measure it on something. I do agree though that it should include the entire season and be announced in January.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Think it should go to guy who clearly adds wins...

Dec 10, 2019, 10:42 AM

... the team probably wouldn't get.

I really think it should go to a player on a team where the talent gap is enormous and that individual player vaults a 3-8 team to 7-4 for example.

CJ Spiller has been my Clemson top candidate for years. Without his individual performance, we might have lost many more games in his tenure.

Perkins would win it and I would be ok with that...

But Burrow is definitely the winner this year.

I always wondered who determines who is invited to the Heisman award show. We all know that ESPN determines who wins it because they pimp that person all season long.

Re: Heisman Trophy has been a joke...

Not so Kyler Murray. He stole it late from TT (though ESPN might have had a hand in that; I don't recall for sure).

Re: Heisman Trophy has been a joke...

Dec 10, 2019, 7:17 PM [ in reply to Re: Heisman Trophy has been a joke... ]

The people that are invited are determined by the vote totals. It's always at least the top 3 in points, but sometimes it can be as many as 6 finalists depending on where the most logical cut off is based on the total points.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You're right. It was Woodsin, not Howard.

Burrow is likely going to set Heisman voting records

Dec 10, 2019, 11:23 AM

this year. Everyone expects him to get the highest percentage of 1st plates votes ever. Nobody else has any shot at all of winning, and, quite frankly, he absolutely deserves it. He's been unreal this year and his numbers back it up. He's on pace to set the NCAA record for highest completion % in a season (currently 77.9%) and he's doing that while averaging 10.7 yards per attempt. It's not like he's throwing a bunch of screens and short passes - he's pushing the ball down the field and still completing everything.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

For arguments sake...let's say the Sooners beat LSU and

Dec 10, 2019, 12:23 PM

Then his team doesn't win the NC? It doesn't change the Heisman. It's a regular season award rewarded to who they feel had the best regular season. They aren't making predictions on who they think will win the NC, have the best pro career, or anything like that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Where does it say it is a "regular season" award...

Dec 10, 2019, 2:44 PM

I agree that that is what it is. My point is that the award should be voted on after the season is done. The way it is now a players performance during the playoff/championship has no bearing on the outcome yet their play in September means everything. It's a joke. From the Heisman website:

The Heisman Memorial Trophy annually recognizes the outstanding college football player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity

Re: Where does it say it is a "regular season" award...

Dec 10, 2019, 7:19 PM

It's a de facto regular season award because of the fact that it's awarded prior to the bowl games. It can't possibly take the entire season into account when the votes are cast in the weeks before and after conference championship weekend.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Where does it say it is a "regular season" award...

Dec 10, 2019, 7:27 PM [ in reply to Where does it say it is a "regular season" award... ]

Why should certain players get an extra two games on a massive stage? The award is the best player, not the best player on the best team. If a guy isn't the best after 12/13 games why should he deserve 2 more games to show it when 95% of players don't get that opportunity?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Heisman Trophy is a joke...a popularity contest

Dec 10, 2019, 12:20 PM

I never understand the complaining about the award going out before the bowls. So you basically think the Heisman should go to the best player on whoever wins the NC? It's a regular season award. They give out individual most valuable offensive and defensive player of the game awards for the bowls so they have individual awards for those games if that's what you're looking for.
