The Cannon-----it wasn't a coincidence.

Sep 8, 2015, 11:15 AM

Guys, for those of you wondering, as I've been saying THEY WEREN'T EVEN GOING TO HAVE A CANNON this season for reasons I've detailed in past posts.

I did my best to organize everyone into calling DR to let him know that we want our cannon, and for the Wofford game it appeared to work. They realized they would have a riot on their hands if they did away with the cannon, while they also wanted to avoid OSHA violations for the cannon operator, and they tried to put in a remote firing system.

The problem is it didn't work, and each time it failed, the cannon operator would have to shoot it manually. If the remote firing system doesn't work, they will get rid of the cannon altogether before they allow the govt to start fining them for unsafe noise ordinances, so be SURE to let DR know that they NEED to find a solution....

We want our cannon and we want it fired on time!!!!!!

How hard, expensive can it be to get a little cannon to work. I mean seriously.

OSHA has done the poor and working folks right since it's beginnings. It has prevented many death in the work place, especially construction, mining and oil drilling operations.

The average government inspector has no idea why the rule is in their book. They just know what they levy a company on. I got busted for 250 dollars over a bucket of sheet rock joint compound. We didn't have a MSDS [material safety data sheet] for it.

My foreman called me in from one of the schools where we were contracted to work. It was a new facility and only construction people were on allowed on the job.

I got there and proceeded to pull MSDS sheets of all three compound involved in the sheetrock mud. I pulled the sheet on Latex, gypsum and water. The MSDS on water was only in case someone fell into a bucket of mud head first and tried to drown them self. :)

Latex is harmless, 'wash skin with potable water.' Gypsum is a mineral, same remedy. Water is what you use to wash the skin and eyes for 'contamination,' of both. The SUMBICH said I needed a MSDS sheet for them when they are mixed together. He said somebody might swallow some. I received 250 dollars worth of laughter from the men when I told him I fired all the two year olds yesterday because they all failed their drug test.

OSHA is what it is. Good inspectors make sure problems are fixed, that saves lives. Poor inspectors collect enough in fines to almost pay the good ones.

I've dealt with OSHA and The EPA extensively over the years.

Sep 8, 2015, 11:26 AM

I know you're guilty until proven innocent with both groups. I also know you don't pick a fight with the a federal government's pencil neck geeks too. I'm just wondering.

Does the scream of 80K fans violate OSHA regulations for employees?

Is there equipment which can differentiate between the roar of 80K screaming fans and our cannon?

Has anyone ever filed a suit with OSHA over crowd noise at a ball game? Couldn't we just issue optional hearing protection for employees and bump OSHA out of the argument?

Is OSHA now involved in anything other than employee safety, health and occupational hazards?

a) using "uh" twice doesn't demonstrate 2x incredulousness

Sep 8, 2015, 1:17 PM

b) They are considering the cannon operator the "employee".

The remote installation was part of the gameday enhancement initiative, led by an infantry of engineers.

There will be kinks to work out, gotta get it all sighted in. Shoot, I still can't get my cell phone to fire correctly on gameday. At least we got the season started with a bang on the field though.

Sep 8, 2015, 11:54 AM

Isn't there a simpler answer than the remote firing system? Like earplugs or other PPE?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Seems like over engineering to me. I think simply recording the cannon firing and playing it over the PA would be the best bet though.

negligence, have to make it totally idiot proof. I'd like to see some two hand no tie down controls which were located a safe distance away from the cannon.

certain DB for a certain period of time. According to this OSHA chart, Death Valley (the fans) won't have a problem even if we do yell too loudly. We were 126.6 vs Miami in '05, but that was only for a short period of time. As for the cannon, it does appear a cannon shot would be louder than the last one listed here. So, why doesn't the operator just wear hearing protection?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I've shot those cannons before... I don't see what the fuss

Sep 8, 2015, 5:48 PM

is about. The only possible "danger" is the noise. My solution: wear ear protection.
The process is simple: you load a "blank" 8 gauge shotgun shell into a tiny cannon and pull a string... I don't get the danger here.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

PPE would be enough for OSHA to back off.

Sep 8, 2015, 5:57 PM

Having dealt with them in the past, anytime you couldn't engineer the hazard out of the process, or add environmental controls to alleviate it, PPE is the next (although least reliable) step.

You could even have a monitor a safe distance away to ensure the cannon operator was properly equipped when firing. Hearing protection, metatarsals, face shield, whatever...

Get the man some earmuffs and steel toes and fire the ####### cannon!!
