Heard something on the radio yesterday...

Jan 18, 2018, 10:48 AM

it made me think. A guy said that for most of America's history, there was no such thing as "immigration law," really. People just came and got off a boat. Maybe that's an over-simplification, but it struck me as generally true. (Most of what I know about immigration I know from the Ellis Island scene in Godfather Part II.)

He was making this statement as a sort of counter to the argument of "those people immigrated here legally," referring to (primarily European) immigrants of the past.

I'm not saying that is good or bad. I just thought it was interesting and thought-provoking. It made me wonder when and why it changed. Probably got too crowded.

Wouldn't change the legality of past immigration

Seems to me that the hidden premise in a lot of these arguments against enforcement of immigration law or increased immigration restriction is opposition to immigration law, in general. I wonder what you'd say if you asked them if they thought immigration laws were legitimate use of democratic power.

In fairness, Prod wasn't making an argument.

He was just saying it's something interesting to consider.

Yes, I was considering it, not attributing that to him***

If you go back 100 years, a major portion of the economy was factory work. For many of these jobs, the only requirement was a warm body. The US was expanding and we needed every upright man we could get. Strict immigration policy then would have meant businesses had to go elsewhere to get what they need.

Today, we need innovators, engineers, tech gurus, and thinkers. So our immigration has evolved to reflect that. And that's exactly who we're attracting. This idea that the dregs of society from around the would are descending upon us is crazy. How does anyone think these people are getting here? You can't go down to the docks and hop on a ship like you could in 1918.

We also need field hands to harvest crops. You know, the jobs that Trump supporting working class whites think they're too good for.

And always, and I mean always

When a new group comes to this country, another group living here resents their coming.

Only the Native Americans got really screwed. Their entire way of life was destroyed. The rest of us have just been bitchin' and moanin'.
