Heading to CHarleston and maybe Savannah
Sep 14, 2022, 7:53 AM
|
|
Any good seafood restaurant recommendations? We already plan to go to Boathouse, Hanks, Acme Seafood, and try the new Sullivans. But we are open to suggestions especially in Savannah if we go down there for eating and sight seeing.
Also where to play an inexpensive round of golf if the wife and I take clubs? Not sure if Patriots Point is ok again (weren't they renovating it?).

I’d say check and see if you can get a time at the Muni, it’s one of the cheapest Charleston area courses for sure.

They have done a lot of work at Muni in the last few years. I used play it a lot many years ago but haven’t been out there recently. Stono Ferry in Hollywood was nice last time I played there but it is a lot more expensive than Muni. Shadowmoss was a pretty good course too but I remember it not draining real well and might be wet with all the rain they’ve had down there. Bowen’s Island Fish Camp on James Island almost to Folly is a good seafood place.

the Charleston area with some of those courses you named. Stono Ferry was actually built and opened during that time, the back nine along the Intercoastal Waterway was stunning. Shadowmoss always equalled MOSQUITOES to me. Monster sized ones. And as for the old Charleston Muni, I am so ancient, I remember playing it when the greens fees were TWO DOLLARS. I also remember playing there with a guy (NOT myself) who sliced a ball onto Maybank Highway, and it landed and EMBEDDED ITSELF in the windshield of a Westinghouse service truck that was driving along the road. The driver stopped, and we hesitantly drove the golf cart over to him. He said he about crapped himself when that golf ball hit the windshield.
I also remember George Miler Country Club in Summerville, I think the name has been changed to something else now. Crowfield Plantation in Goose Creek. Berkeley Country Club between Goose Creek and Moncks Corner was our "Go to" course when we slipped out of work early, or had a day off during the week.
The first course I ever broke 100 on was in that area, it no longer exists. It was called "King's Grant on the Ashley". Never had broke 100, and hit the final green in regulation, two putts would have given me an EIGHTY NINE. I choked big time, 3 putted for an even 90.
Goose Creek even had an old nine hole course called The Oaks (?). I'd be surprised if it still exists today. Also played the old Naval Weapons Station course many times.
I even played Yeoman's Hall Club in Hanahan several times, never realized at the time how hard it was to get on there. Had a friend I worked with that was really good friends with the Pro there, he got us on most anytime we wanted to go, as long as we didn't overdo it.

Haha. I duck hooked one onto Maybank Highway on the par 3 by what used to be the blinking light at Riverland Drive. Took a great bounce right over a VW Beetle. I lived on Johns Island right across the Stono on River Road and my uncle lived on the 18th fairway so my cousins and I would sneak out there at night and hit balls. Good times.

We went to Poogan's Porch which is right next to Husk. Poogans was good. My cousin said Husk was really good. I prefer just getting some fresh seafood at Crosbys and taking it home to cook it.

Wood & Grain in Mt. Pleasant is my favorite. Their sister

restaurant next door is Langdon's and it is excellent as well. High Thyme on Sullivan's is good. Langdon's and High Thyme are not only "seafood" restaurants with other options. Both have good grouper dishes often.
Wood & Grain is a groovy spot with fire roasted pizza, which I never get because I love their seafood, lots of oyster options, but my go to dishes in addition to the oysters are the Roasted Octopus appetizer, the lobster roll, tuna with ginger and the salmon crudo. They have some yummy specialty drinks and a little Laphroaig Single Malt. I don't think they take reservations, so you may want to go a little early.

From low country - went to Louisiana a while and came back
Good people -- check their times - maybe weekends only and then food truck festivals ....
here is a yelp link
https://www.yelp.com/biz/mazycks-grille-mount-pleasantMazyck's Grille - Mount Pleasant, SC 8 reviews of Mazyck's Grille "What a find.. Mazyck's Grille, a food truck located in the Six Mile Community on Rifle Range, just off of Six Mile Rd is a hidden gem and I'm so glad I found it. It's marked with signs & a white tarp with an entrance & exit one way system. It's a little hidden but you will find it. It's very near the intersection on the left as you turn right from Six Mile Rd. This is my first experience of a food truck and it did not disappoint. A black owned family run business providing amazingly good shrimp, fish, & crab cakes with fries or rice or both along with veggies & iced tea. I just opted for the shrimp, crab cakes & fish today with nothing else. I would have stayed to linger a little longer & take pictures but it was raining pretty good heavy & I was afraid I would melt!! It was so so good. They take cash or credit cards. The truck is spotless & efficient. The staff are friendly, helpful and very grateful for business. I loved everything about this whole concept and I will be making many visits. They have been open about six months. Loved loved loved!!! EDIT: Thursday Friday Saturday evening/nights only."

out Cachita's Kitchen food truck that parks in the evenings almost daily at Signarama parking lot located at 1340 Chuck Dawley Blvd. The food is delicious and one of the best values in the area. I like the shrimp, the fried fish, the carnitas and the pastor Cachitacos.
