Shane Beamer at SEC media days.

Jul 19, 2021, 4:38 PM

I'm old. I'm retired. I have no life. I was home all afternoon waiting on my AC repairman to get here. I watched media days. Saw Dan Mullen, Ed Orgeron and Shane Beamer.

My take on Beamer was exactly the same as the panel of SEC commentators.

He clearly won the press conference. He was far better at the podium and answering questions from the audience than either of the other two guys. If you didn't know it, you would think he was the one with the experience handling pressers and media days.

Now, with that said, let me quickly follow up, lest y'all think I've gone berserk and am ready to crown him the greatest coach since Dabo Swinney. I'm not.

Winning the press conference is far different than winning the game on Saturday. I can give you one example very near to me.

Willie Taggart.

He came to FSU and was introduced as the new coach. He wowed everybody. He said all the right things and had all the right answers. Fans were ecstatic that we had a coach who loved FSU and who wanted to be at FSU. He talked about his offense and called it "lethal simplicity." We were over the top in excitement. We were expecting a quick rise back to the top of the nation.

And, then they teed that tater up.

Willie Taggart was as bad on the sidelines as he was good on the podium, even worse.

Winning the presser is good in July. But, it means nothing in September.

My economic theories sounded good on paper. Then they were put into practice. Didn’t turn out so well for hundreds of millions of people.

The human nature argument against socialism is pretty weak. Humans have been going against our nature since the dawn of agriculture and the formation of large societies. And most people would view our ability to go against our nature as a positive.

Humans evolved to live in the African savanna. Yet, here we are scattered all over the planet. I mean, people live in Svalbard, where the average temperature during winter is below zero and the Sun doesn’t rise for 4 months. That’s certainly not human nature.

Maybe socialism would work there. Want to start a Revolution? Or are you just interested in the abstract?

Can you ask the US to lift the sanctions that have had devastating effects on their ability to grow economically? It’s gotta be pretty hard for a tiny country, surrounded by US allies, that’s mostly mountainous, and with very little natural resources to really thrive economically. Sanctions make it even harder.

It wasn’t hard to live there before the sanctions? I’m sure the propaganda they’re told to believe makes them think it wasn’t.

I’ve seen a lot of my liberal brethren make this argument recently.

I’m curious how agriculture goes against our best interest?

Re: Shane Beamer at SEC media days.

Humans have been around for ~200,000 years. 95% of that time was spent as hunter-gatherers. The agricultural revolution changed that. We adopted a more sedimentary lifestyle, which led to health problems. We formed large societies, which led to more diseases. There’s nothing in our DNA that makes us grow wheat. It’s just simply not a part of human nature.

Now, personally, I believe the agriculture revolution was a net positive for humans. Going against our nature has benefitted us in plenty of ways. Other primate species, our cousins, don’t really practice monogamy, but most human cultures do. I think that has been a net positive, even though we are “hard-wired” to sleep with multiple partners.

There are more examples, but I think the point is made. Humans have constantly fought against our own nature. We’ve had devastating consequences, but for the most part, I’m glad we are no longer hunter-gatherers living in small tribal communities.

Jul 19, 2021, 8:11 PM [ in reply to Re: Shane Beamer at SEC media days. ]

The fact agriculture is a net positive is why the argument seems to be ignoring an important nuance.

Human nature encourages us to act in our self interest. Human nature isn't just acting as if it's 100,000 years ago.

Hunter-gatherers lived much healthier lives, with longer life expectancies than humans after the agricultural revolution. Again, it led to a more sedimentary lifestyle and allowed for newer diseases to spread more quickly. The scientific revolution changed that, but that was barely 500 years ago. How was it in our self interest to live shorter and less healthy lives?

The life expectancy data I've seen was negligible 33 years vs 30 years. But as with everything, disease and health issues were only an issue if you were the unlucky one impacted by them. If you were someone who avoided the disease you lived a much better life with agriculture.

Agriculture led to a greater abundance of food which allowed populations to grow. It's definitely in your best interest to have a sustainable source versus the fear of foraging for days and starving. It allowed people to specialize into different trades and develop complex societies.

Those complex societies is what allowed that scientific revolution. No one in their right mind would argue it would be in our best interest to have a mere 10 million humans on this planet.

Sparky Woods is the only UofSC head coach to be a colllege head coach again. He was the VMI Keydets football Head coach, 2008–2014. Now a consultant at UofNC.

Re: Shane Beamer

Jul 20, 2021, 11:22 AM

Incorrect.... ish. True for modern coaches, but VMI is an awesome school with a borderline non-existant program other than historical reference. With Sparky, he joined after they dropped to the Big South, and then later tried to go back to the Socon. He could not win. You really you have to search for the one coach that truly did not end his career at the coots.

Frank Dobson, who did one war-time year at the Coots (2-1-1 : The one loss was a 39-0 drumming by one of his previous employers - Clemson), He both returned to his previous gig (University of Richmond) and then later went to Maryland and won a Conference title - at both Richmond and Maryland.

He is the ONLY coach to survive USC and later become a major (now) P5 program... if you consider Maryland a P5 program nowadays.

Re: So, you're saying that Taggart, and possibly Beamer, were

Jul 19, 2021, 6:09 PM

Nope. I think Willie Taggart is a fine person, just a guy who was WAAAAY over his head taking over FSU.

I do not know how he was successful at WKU or USF. Not enough data to know how he would have done at Oregon.

But, it became more and more clear with each passing week that Taggart was more of a cheerleader than a CEO. Seemed to think by telling people, "This is Florida State!" that was all he needed to do to get the best athletes and to get them to develop once they got here.

His practices were disorganized (by the testimony of his players) and confusing. He seemed like he was more interested in being their best buddy and pal than in being their coach.

Doesn't make him a bad person, just a horrible coach.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'll give Taggart this, he never got rattled on the sideline

Jul 19, 2021, 6:57 PM

then again, I wasn't sure if it was a paper cutout or actually Taggart, he never seemed to do anything.

20 years ago I held the title of "World's shortest 10 handicapper."
10 years ago I held the title of "World's shortest 12 handicapper."
Today, I hold the title of "World's shortest 18 handicapper."

Notice the similarity?

30 years ago a 400 yard par 4 was a driver, 7 iron.

Today a 400 yard hole is a driver, 3 wood, 9 iron.
