Freddie “Benedict Arnold” Freeman returns to Atlanta

Jun 24, 2022, 1:57 PM

I hope he goes 0-16 in this series. I never would have thought he’d have chosen money over his teammates and clubhouse family. But as we all have seen recently….money can make someone do things they never would have dreamed of doing before money.

He will receive a standing ovation...

Jun 24, 2022, 2:03 PM

during his first plate appearance tonight and, frankly, he deserves it.

After that, 0 - 16 for the weekend would be fine with me.

He actually didn't choose money, he chose an extra year for the same amount of money per year. I just think him and his wife already made up their mind they were done and ready to leave. Braves couldn't piddle around and risk not getting the other top 1B available to wait on him. In the long run the Braves made the right move and still have a loaded lineup.

You do understand it’s professional baseball?

The do this stuff for money.

Are you always this idealistic and unreasonable?

Jun 24, 2022, 2:13 PM

I would’ve liked to see the Braves keep him, but they were smart not to overpay for him like the Dodgers did.

I don’t blame Freddie for taking the Dodgers’ offer. If you had an opportunity to get paid millions more dollars a year, I’m guessing you would take it too.

It wasn't just the money...

- He's from California.
- He already owned a house in California in Newport Beach.
- His wife wanted to move back out west.

But possibly more than all that, he trusted his agent to make the right deal for him at Atlanta. Him and the agent got greedy and pushed for the 6th year. Chipper warned Freddie that AA's first offer would be his best and if tried to push for more, AA would call his bluff, and would have a backup plan ready and would move on in a moments notice. There would be no negotiation.

But let's be honest, Freddie got what he really wanted, that 6th year....and another 27 million to boot.

^^ THIS is the real story---not some emotional whine ^^

@RJC: If you were a TRUE Braves fan, you would know this too.

Do any of y'all read .... Freddie was interviewed ... Freddie is in LA because his agent, unbeknownst to him, gave Alex A an ultimatum. Freddie has said repeatedly he would have stayed for the same money, he and his family loved the Braves squad AND Atlanta. Alex responded to ultimatum by trading two days later for Matt Olson. Freddie found out when media announced while having BDAY party for his son. Totally caught him off guard and sent him into shock. He had NO clue what had happened. He thought staying in Atl was a done deal and stayed out of the process because he trusted his agent.

While I hope he goes 0-16 as well ... I would stand and cheer for him during first at bat all 3 games ... he carried this team for a while and stayed while they went through their rebuild. He was one of the very few reasons to watch the Braves for a couple of years.

He took less money to leave.

Jun 24, 2022, 4:57 PM

That’s what really stings and makes it really hard to pull for him. Terms of LA deal and atlanta’s best offer have been well documented. Yes, the LA contract was a slightly larger dollar amount, but it was spread out over more years with much of the salary deferred way into the future and all of it more heavily taxed. All things considered, Freeman would’ve ended his career a richer man by taking the braves’ offer.
Some blame the agent, but the agent is freddie’s rep. Whole thing just stinks of him wanting to be a dodger. Which sucks

Professional baseball is a job and a business. As a fan I hated to see Freddie leave. I ask you if a rival job offered you a longer contract in your home state that set up your family for life, what would you do? He loved Atlanta. His decision was purely business and you can't blame him. That being said he's the enemy now so 0-16 sounds good.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Freddie didn't owe the Braves any more loyalty than they

Jun 24, 2022, 6:13 PM

showed him. They slow played the negotiation, rolling the dice that no one else would be willing to give him the sixth year he so desired. They figured he would cave in at the end, and take the five years they offered. Surprise! He still had more market value than they wanted to admit.

The Braves then cried a river of crocodile tears, and tried to paint a player who had BEEN their franchise for years, as a villain. Freddie was NOT the villain, or the traitor here. There IS no villain, it's just Major League baseball business. But, if anyone lost loyalty, it was the Braves, not Freddie.
