Question about Braxton Miller

Dec 9, 2013, 6:16 PM

He looks like a slimmer build running QB. Shaw ground us down at 4ypc and 22 attempts. Can Braxton do that to carry his offense? I imagine he will break a couple longer runs and his average will be higher. But if we don't have 6 TOs and are moving the ball at will can he carry the rock 20-30 times? Or will he be more a 11 attempts for 120 yards guy?

Key factor to the game, and it's not Miller's running…..

ability. The offense cannot turn the ball over. Even with the yards Shaw racked up on us, it wouldn't have made a difference if we didn't turn the ball 6 times. Bottom line don't turn the ball over and the oline protect Tajh and we can win this game.

Even with the turnovers IF we had kept Shaw from making the third and long plays we would have won the game. Unless we turned it over even more which is a possibility. I don't know what their third down conversion was but I am sure it was 80% or better. Can't win like that. Much to hard on the defense. I am sure we will work on ball security in the next three weeks.I hope we work on fielding punts. That has scared me all year.

Not quite...

Dec 9, 2013, 6:32 PM

SC was 10/ 19, while Clemson was 6/ 11. Clemson actually did slightly better on third downs than SC did, the problem was that they had so many more opportunities because of the turnovers.

The same was true against the coots. I hope we see a warrior typ effort like the one last year against LSU. If we do, we win the game handily. IMO

Re: Question about Braxton Miller

Miller has over 1000 yards on 150 attempts in 11 games this year. So about 15 carries per game.

Go with a 4-4-3 defense and make him beat you throwing.

:)

two pretty different offenses...

Dec 9, 2013, 6:30 PM

Shaw ran a lot because South Carolina is a more traditional offense, and they couldn't make anything else work. He pretty much saved them from being completely overwhelmed by Clemson's defense, and even so, South Carolina only ended up with around 300 yards even while running more then 70 plays. South Carolina's offense did just enough against a team that was basically serving them points on a silver platter.

Ohio State is a run first team that grinds teams down with Hyde and with designed runs by Miller. You don't get to 1,000 yards rushing as a QB by scampering away on 3rd down every once in a while, as Shaw did against us. So what we have to do to OSU is make them one dimensional, as Michigan State did. They shut down the pass completely, and made Miller attempt more than 20 runs.

I think I would rather shut down the run

Dec 9, 2013, 6:32 PM

And make them pass

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The bigger worry for the tigers is Ohio State's o-line.

Dec 9, 2013, 6:34 PM

Four seniors (3 Red shirt SR) and 1 sophomore. All are 4* and 5*'s.

Jack Mewhort LT 6-6 312 SR (RS) 4*
Andrew Norwell LG 6-6 310 SR 5*
Corey Linsley C 6-3 295 SR (RS) 4*
Marcus Hall RG 6-5 315 SR (RS) 4*
Taylor Decker RT 6-7 313 SO 4*

That's BY FAR the toughest line Clemson will see all year.

Georgia's and FSU's were pretty good

Dec 9, 2013, 6:36 PM

Which, I guess, isn't a good thing considering what happened in those games. I'm not sure of the star- level of UGa's OL, but I'd bet FSU's was on the same level as OSU's.

FSU's three big "studs" on the oline are Brian Stork, Cameron Erving and Tre Jackson. All were 3*'s.

South Carolina has a pretty good line of similar stature.

May actually be a little bigger than OSU.

I am not talking size. I am talking about talent level and experience.

Eh South Carolina and FSU had good OLs

Dec 9, 2013, 6:36 PM

You could probably say the same about our DL for them too. Seem to remeber northwestern getting pressure and penetration so I'm not too worried about that matchup.

Re: He will carry it 15 times.

Dec 9, 2013, 6:42 PM

However, only 5-7 of those will be called runs for him. It is what he does when he pulls the ball down when his WRs are covered that concerns me. Vic and Corey absolutely have to keep contain...if he gets outside, he has the ability to go the distance.
Stopping Carlos Hyde, their 235 lb TB is also a concern. He seems to be able to fall forward for four yards a carry. Their passing offense has completed a lot of deep balls, many off of play fakes, but that is not what worries me. Defense HAS to stop #5 and #34. Do that, and we will all feel pretty good after this game. Go Tigers!

Yeah!

Dec 9, 2013, 7:14 PM

Good responses tigernetters. You surprise me when you get the chickens out of your mind. I think we all agree that this will be a quality game. Hope ESPN appreciates us when all is said and done.

Our special teams play has to ..........

improve dramatically next year. We used to get our share of TD's on kickoff and punt returns which now seem like a distant memory. It's not like we don't have the talent or the speed. I think Sammy had a bigger ST game against UMD a couple of years ago than we had this entire year cumulatively. I doubt much will change for the bowl game but it better next year. It's all in the coaching because it's not lack of talent!
