Texas A&M NIL $30,000,000.00

Jan 18, 2022, 10:56 AM

Listening to ESPNU radio, the comment was made that A&M boosters paid out 30 million to this recruiting class.

Re: Texas A&M NIL $30,000,000.00

Jan 18, 2022, 11:19 AM

Agree, I even heard TAMU had $40 Million available!
U. Texas set a goal of $10 Million, and TAMU wanted to blow that number away.
Remember both of those schools have Billionaire Alumni, and football matters to them.
SMU got the death penalty for much less (chump change) compared to these schools.

After dumping a lot of money, we will see if it brings a Natty to TAMU.
A bunch of kids will end up in trouble too.....
Remember their coach could not make it at Clemson as a pitcher, so we shall see.....
If he wins TAMU a championship, his new contract will be well over $100 Million!

Clemson (Alumni) does not have the money to buy a team with an NFL payroll. Just a fact.
TAMU and Texas bring in $150 Million per year, nearly twice what Clemson does.
On that revenue list we get beat by most SEC schools, including USC and FSU.
Alabama is top 5, and Oklahoma is top 10 with athletic revenue. Clemson typically between 25-30.
We can't compete as a semi-pro team. Remember that when you complain about our recruiting.
Dabo does a great job dealing with this environment!

The bigger problem with Texas A&M & Texas...

Jan 18, 2022, 1:35 PM

is that they have now and in the foreseeable future leap frogged us in recruiting due to NIL. They are the first 2; ND, Oklahoma, UM and USC will most likely soon follow. A&M has jumped to the teir1 level where OSU, Georgia, and Alabama live on an annual basis. Those 3 won't be moved for different reasons but A&M probably won't either if 30 got them to #1 this quickly. A couple more classes like the one they just bought and they'll likely make the playoffs maybe even w/o reaching the SEC Championship game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Can Still Only Play 11 at a time!

Jan 18, 2022, 6:26 PM

Clemson doesn't have to be better than those stacked up recruiting classes. I would say Georgia's cumulative recruiting classes was superior in rank to ours - yet - it took a pick 6 for them to beat us with a struggling offense. And, it was a struggling offense not their dang defense - since other teams also managed to stop us.

Point being - we can't act as though; "that's all she wrote" because this is happening! I would be willing to bet South Dakota State can't beat SCAR in recruiting; but that the Bison would beat the chickens! Anybody disagree?

They would beat them in the trenches ironically!

That's hypothetical - something that happened was Alabama needing an onsides kick to beat the Tigers in 2015 w/o Mike Williams with a composite class that was 17th at the time. Vs. #1 and coached by Nick Saban!

It can still get done! We have Dabo Swinney and that guy I have confidence will figure something out and navigate this thing in such a way that keeps Clemson competitive!

Jan 19, 2022, 11:33 AM [ in reply to Re: Texas A&M NIL $30,000,000.00 ]

Aggies have been cheating since football started and they still don't have a national title. Now, cheating is legal and let's see if that benefits them. I still have my doubts and I still think Jimbo Fisher is an assturd that left FSU in a mess they may never recover from. I'd be more inclined to believe they would win it all with a different coach and I do know he got lucky in 2013 with Jameis Winston and their last second comeback.
We are talking about a school who claims a national title in 1939. Even that title is highly disputable with several others also claiming a title that season. They were cheating back then, too, but it didn't stick.

Just my personal opinion, I wouldn’t mind seeing A&M win it if we didn’t. UGA has been doing shady stuff forever now, and there fans suck. Bama needs to go away. Ohio state fans are terrible. I work with some A&M alum and they are good people. I went to college station a few years back and had a good time. Before the national championship I watched a interview with saban and smart. They were crying and complaining the NCAA needs to regulate nil. It soothes my soul to see them cry and pretty much complain about cheating because they know what’s coming. Valid point you make ...continue to make...about specific facts (the trees). But if you look at the forest and not the trees, you’ll conclude where there’s smoke there’s indeed a forest fire.

At the end of the day Jimbo’s signing day interview validates there was a significant and major NIL effort and plan employed by A&M used to attract recruits. Does it matter if it was a 5 million or 100 mm effort? Bottom line, the NIL was not intended to be used to attract recruits, and it was at A&M. Jimbo even said in his interview that the A&M NIL recruiting effort was merely what was already going on under the table, but now is in the open to be seen. I found it fascinating that Jimbo would essentially publicly admit, yes we’ve been paying players under the table, but now we are using NIL in a shady manner to attract them. I am amazed this admission by Jimbo has not been picked apart. I just wonder if Dabo had said that, what would the follow up be?

I don’t think so. I think Don Juan has an issue with taking a single random internet post, which detailed A&M boosters forming nonprofits to dole out $30 mm to recruits, as factual. He is 100% right. We do not know that to be fact.

My point is we still learned a lot without knowing that amount. The A&M head coach has admitted that NIL played a big role in his #1 recruiting class. However, Jimbo dismissed NIL as stuff that was already going on under the table at A&M (and he asserted everywhere else) prior to NIL. Jimbo basically said it’s no change, it’s just in the open now. I found that comment quite interesting and likely telling on the major places he has been...LSU, Texas, FSU, A&M, since he matter of factly implies paying players under the table was commonplace? There’s a lot of room to fill in the blanks on details, but it was very clear in concept what Jimbo told everyone who listened.

As Don points out scale and details (facts) are important, but according to Jimbo’s own admission, it’s not mere internet gossip that: 1) under the table payments were already happening in a big way and 2) A&M is merely bringing it into the open in the form of NIL, and using the loopholes in NIL as a recruiting tool.

The amount and scale pre and post NIL “payments” do beg the question - has anything really changed? I suspect the scale of it all has increased drastically at some schools (the more honest programs) but maybe not changed a lot at others (insert SEC and a lot of other big time college programs here?).

We already have those three leagues.

NFL
NCAA FBS
NCAA Div 3

I have made a couple of sarcastic posts showing a way that we could end up with an "NIL" league as you call it.

But, it has to be done apart from the NCAA. Unless the NCAA reinvents itself (I think that is the word Jim Phillips used) and sets up a system where a kid can be paid by the university/NFL/boosters with some sort of self-regulation (draft, contracts, etc.) and where academics becomes optional at best.

Their boosters seem to forget there is a transfer portal, you can buy all of the players but they aren’t going to sit on the bench. Going to be a lot of wasted money when kids start transferring out, also don’t think it’s going to bring them a natty. Talent is important yes but as our previous teams have shown two and three stars who are fully bought in with each other and the will to win prevails time and time again. You can buy talent but can not buy culture and chemistry. They are setting themselves up for a me me me culture good luck with that

Allegedly schools like A&M and TX are safeguarding against the transfer portal. They are drawing up NIL contracts where the recruits don’t collect (at least not the full amount) if they portal. It is NFL Jr. if they leave they vacate their NIL deal leaving it to a new 4-5 star.

Agreed!

You see this on a smaller scale in H.S. ball at some schools. "Boosters determining which kids play"! Can't you see some Freshman with a NIL deal who is all the hype - who hasn't shown it to the coaches in practice - getting game reps over another player? I can!
Boosters aren't at practice!
Boosters and NIL providers don't know that "Mr. NIL has stopped trying to become a better football player" because they have been satisfied with their NIL money! They lost that hunger that made them NIL worthy.

It happens when "it's given"! Then the coach is pressured into playing someone over politics rather than who could really help the team win. The "team" ends up suffering in some situations. Of course, if the advantage is such where "they can get away with it" nobody knows!

I anticipate trouble though!

Everyone pump the brakes on A&M suddenly buying their way to a natty. That team has had a ton of talent for a few years now; on par with Clemson star power if not better from recruiting ranking standpoint. And you know what they've done with it? Nothing. They haven't even sniffed a SEC title yet. Their problem is finding coaches worth a snot (and I'm not talking about Jimbo, He's not a bad coach). They need great positional coaches to go along with it all as well. So let'em blow their money on bringing in more talent to get underdeveloped and wasted.

can run to a championship style season, but it takes 60 to do that in football. That's just too many moving parts and personalities and money to A) win pretty much every time out and B) sustain itself.

In basketball, there might be a new Fab 5 every season with a different program every time laying down top dollar and getting a group of kids to buy in. You just can't stock a football team that way. We're going to see hundreds of millions of dollars lit on fire to come to that realization. I hope it's not us too much during the pioneer phase of this.

wildblulou® I agree for the most part with what you are saying! Football is the ultimate team sport for a reason!
What happens when one kids NIL money is better than someone else and they feel they deserve the money? Ever see an option team's tv broadcast? It's said throughout the broadcast that you have to play with discipline and stay in your lane. The NIL is going to through incentives to be a playmaker - which should translate to more NIL money! Which in the football game "MAY" again, "MAY" pressure some kids to not play with discipline. Because they are looking to "make hero plays" instead of playing where they are needed. Good teams will take advantage of that no matter how many stars!

Same thing on offense! How much crying and running the other players routes "MIGHT" you see? Because a player wants "more money"! Therefore they want the key position that gets the ball most of the time. How "unselfish" will kids remain; who do nothing but block? Mostly other WR's or RB's who coaches have discovered are best suited for that. Though in many of these kids heads they are far better than they show on the practice or even game field. Dissension in the ranks - in short, "maybe" something that becomes common because of jealousy and greed!
