Good for you, DeAndre. Have to take matters into your own hands when your union is the weakest in sports and you're playing a game as dangerous as pro football.

He signed a contract. You don't think he should honor it?

Jul 30, 2016, 12:06 PM

If both sides agree to renegotiate, then that's obviously different. Otherwise, I would think a contract is a contract. Or was there fraud?

Yep he signed it and unless they decide to give him a raise .
There is not much he can do but sit out and lose more money.
He has def put up good numbers and they more than likely will increase his salary this year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, I don't think he should honor it...

Jul 30, 2016, 12:28 PM

He is locked into a rookie contract that was stacked against him thanks to veterans who negotiated the CBA. He is playing a sport that could end his career at any moment. I know you people are big on principle here and "keeping your word", but don't be lazy. The issue goes a lot deeper than signing your name on a piece of paper.

Jul 30, 2016, 12:52 PM

All I'm saying is if they don't pay him more there is nothing he can do about it.
Sure try to get more money because he has earned it.
But if the Texans stand by the contract he will only hurt his self by not playing.

"But if the Texans stand by the contract he will only hurt himself by not playing."

-@badb

I respectfully disagree. As long as he respectfully, and clearly, articulates his reasons for doing so.

How would not playing hurt him? You are talking about a position that allows you to play well into your thirties. Theoretically, if he sits out one year, he is only one year older.

#### right, he should honor it! If he didn't play well, does the team get to lower his contract amount? NO! Man Up and honor your contract. Renegotiate when it expires.... Or hold out for 25 days and play for free!!

Re: He signed a contract. You don't think he should honor it?

Jul 30, 2016, 7:51 PM

No, they just trade or cut him...

It's business. He has some leverage, and is being advised to use it. Football is the most extreme version in pro sports of "get it while the gettin' is good"

Rookies don't have a choice of how much money their contracts are worth as Rookies. Like I already said, there should be a clause for rookies that become starters before that contract is up. He was a Pro Bowler for Christ sake, and being paid as a rookie. They are no longer Rookies if they are good enough to be a starter, and talented enough to become a starter and play in a Pro Bowl!!! He doesn't play like a Rookie, so don't allow teams to pay a Pro Bowler Rookie pay!!!

Signed a generous rookie contract and became a multi-millionaire before attending his 1st camp ($3,900,000). $445,000 roster bonus will be earned if he attends the first 5 days of the current training camp. Texans' exercised his contract option for next year for $7.9 million. Hopkins option is to hold-out and expose himself to fines of $40,000 per day. Phenomenal athlete who is receiving either poor advice or working with an incredible negotiator.

There is not widespread sympathy for these type athletes except from others who similarly feel entitlement trumps integrity, appreciation and thankfulness, not to mention Karma. Expecting him to be in camp sometime this week.

Rookie contracts IMO, the way they are set up allows teams to use great rookie talent for bargain basement prices. It should be setup that if a rookie becomes a starter within the 4 years of the rookie contract, there should be a renegotiation clause in their (bargain basement) rookie contract!!!

Not sure how I feel about this issue - a contract is a promise.
1-He signed the deal so he should honor it.
2- NFL teanms are businesses and contracts are renegotiated all the time

jmo but a signed contract means you have a deal and you complete it, now can you bargain for more while doing it yes, but you do what you agreed to do

Texans rookie Will Fuller is set to make more than Nuuk

Jul 30, 2016, 12:11 PM

I would renegotiate to if a guy who hasn't played a down is set to make more than a previous 1st rounder who has proved himself and was an all pro last year.

1. My question is why doesn't he just show up to avoid fines, but refuse to play to avoid injury.

2. Also, he should tell Houston, if you are going to pay me this amount, then I'm only going to work this hard. If you pay me like I'm one of the best, then I'll give it my all.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Some of the facts....

Jul 30, 2016, 7:05 PM

The Texans particularly, and the NFL in general has a history of extending productive players like NUK going into their 4th year. They did that with Watt drafted in 2011 and their 2012 top pick. NUK is their 2013 1st rounder.

Instead of beginning talks with him to extend, they picked up his team option for a 5th year. That extends him but at a much lower rate than he's worth.

KC just extende their 2013 top pick today for 4 more years.

Billionaires win these pissing matches, but I can't blame NUK for trying. Who knows maybe they had told him they were going to talk to him about an extension and optioned him instead.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Even though he signed a contract the Texans should honor him.

Jul 30, 2016, 8:38 PM

Elite WRs are very rare and you know every team in the NFL is getting a their jokers and spades together to offer the Texans a deal. They better step up because one thing you never want is for your best player to be disgruntled. That's when the locker room will start choosing sides and then all heaven break loose. And the the spiked ball starts rolling down the hill.

Re: FB Update: Hopkins skips Texans camp, holding out for new contract

Jul 30, 2016, 8:43 PM

He deserves the raise, but he's also being selfish. Go play the game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

and to get around a new contract w/ a higher base salary....

Jul 30, 2016, 8:53 PM

load it up with high-reward incentives....it keeps Nuk from being a disgruntled player on the field (never a good idea) and it resolves the hold-out and a lot of contract issues.

Nuk's an elite player and he's not making elite WR money. The Texans suckat QB and they just paid JJ Watt (their other elite player) a ton of money.

And isn't the owner of the Texans a usuck alum?? Hmmm......

One of, if not the best WR in the league.

You signed a contract!

Jul 30, 2016, 9:30 PM

You're better than what you signed up for, but be a MAN and honor your word! Ask for the BIG bucks at expiration...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He deserves it and knows it

Jul 31, 2016, 6:14 PM

If they don't want to pay up they will destroy their season. I'm usually not for a player going against their contract but players shouldn't be this severely underpaid. All-pro players shouldn't be paid a tenth of what their teammates are.
