Question about pulling for ACC
Apr 5, 2016, 7:58 AM
|
|
If possible, I would like serious and honest responses.
Other than conference pride, what does pulling for the other ACC teams do for Clemson, especially in basketball?
Has it really helped Clemson?
The ACC is one of the premier conferences in basketball yet we have not been able to recruit top-notch players.
So I figured I'd asked for feedback why Clemson fans should pull for another ACC team (aside from just pure conference pride).

You sitting in your room cheering for wake forest or against bc doesn't impact anything.
Acc teams winning promotes advertising deals and sos. More money and easier time making post season play.
Doesn't mean I have to pull for any other team like some idiot sec homer.
You can pull for anyone you want to for any reason. It is just entertainment.

Most people say that you should pull for your conference because it makes your team look better, but I won't pull for Tarholes, Dook, Bugs, See Men Holes, Twerps (when they were in ACC), Chute Pack...the traditional ACC teams. They are rivals, don't like 'em, won't pull for 'em.
I know, that is a "get off my lawn, you rotten kids!" attitude, but don't like 'em, won't pull for 'em.

Pulling for an ACC team just because CU is in the ACC? Uh ... No thanks. Got no dog in the fight. Doesn't do a thing for CU. Could not care less!

Just because you pull for a team doesn't mean they will win.

Therefore, pulling for a certain school has no impact one way or another.
The main consideration is determining if you are OK or not OK being a gay. If you're OK with that, then sure you can pull for UNC as part of the ACC.

my opinion if the ACC does well. But the biggest thing in basketball is conference payouts(and CU gets an equal share) are significantly increased/dependent on conference success in the NCAA tourney. The championship game ironically is the only game that doesn't effect those payouts but all the preceding rounds do and the ACC absolutely raked it in with their performance this year.

In general, if I have zero preference for either team, I pull for the ACC team for the simple facts that it makes our schedule look better (during the season, when we need it) and it means more money for us (in the postseason, due to ACC revenue sharing between schools).
I hate UNC, GT, FSU, etc, sure, but in this case it's just business. But just to be clear, when I say "pull for", I may have a preference that an ACC school win, but I'm not exactly going to sit around heartbroken over a loss at the buzzer either.

Having 6 Sweet 16 teams and half of the Elite 8 and Final 4

helps the ACC's perception, which will lead to Clemson being more likely to get "the benefit of the doubt" if we're on the bubble.
It also means more money for Clemson, obviously with the payout for Tournament wins but also indirectly with better TV contracts.
It can also be used as a tool for recruiting if the coach can sell it correctly, a la "Come play against the best in the country."
Remember that we don't just compete against the ACC. We missed out on the tournament this year specifically because we blew it against weaker SEC and Big Ten teams. Overall, a stronger ACC is better for us, in my opinion.
I was happy UNC lost, and I don't particularly like Boeheim, but I'm happy to see the rest of the conference do well.

The prestige items mentioned above are all true. There's also the financial benefit to basketball success. Conferences receive revenue distribution based on how many games their conference teams play in. 3 final 4 games, 4 elite 8 games, and 18 games leading up to the elite 8. That's 25 out of 67 total games in the tourney. The ACC will get about a fifth of the total payout for the NCAA tournament. The payout isn't even based on games played, but it's a big component and the ACC played in 37% of the games. Pick any game at random and pick either one of the teams. There's a 1 in 5 chance that you picked an ACC team. Those odds were 1 in 2 for the last and most lucrative of those games.

can't be content to play in a prestigious league. You can't sit back and say "Look at all those great teams that whoop us in the regular season...I sure am proud to be associated with that." The prestige has to be a tool to leverage to attract the better players. Combine the prestige with the player-development and the great Clemson education and environment, and the right coach should be successful at Clemson. Easier said than done, I know! But that's the basic formula.

for much of the season we were playing at a level that was above them, but you're right they had better seasons than us.
The main point stands that it should help us to market ourselves as part of the toughest conference in the country.

a pretty good reason. It's not conference pride to me, it is how does it benefit Clemson. BTW I was pulling for the Wildcats since I have never got over finishing with 4 players in the Dean Dome.

because I have friends that went there. Also VT because I grew up near there. All of these are when it in no way would be a negative for Clemson. Otherwise I would only pull against the coots if they were playing one of the others
