Haven't seen discussed much is the impact on fans...

Jul 3, 2022, 10:23 PM

...traveling to away games in this era of long distance conference realignment. Wonder how many fans will make the trip to Jersey from LA to watch USC beat the stuffing out of Rutgers? So many other scenarios to consider. How about UCLA fans flying to West Lafayette to watch the big game with Purdue. Or Okie fans flying into Cootlumbia to lay the beat down on little brother.

There will essentially be very few visiting fans able to afford that kind of travel for regular season games on any kind of regular basis. Many games will have no visiting fans to speak of. The TV money is huge, but the empty seats for the less than marquee matchups will be there for all to see I think. Kind of like Nascar in recent years.

Good point. Compound that with airline issues in which thousands of flights are cancelled each weekend, preventing a punctual return and maybe fans are putting their jobs at risk by attending meaningless games.

Maybe travel woes will ease somewhat after the Labor Day end of vacation season, but with the turmoil in every area of modern life I wouldn't count on it.

Not to mention the non-football sports...

...and the expense of traveling cross country for a weekend series for USC baseball vs Maryland. Or that one game between UCLA and Penn St basketball on a Tuesday night. No idea how they're going to solve that. Not to mention the time away from classes for the players. Just crazy to think about.

From the fan perspective, everything you mentioned here is why the SEC will make the most sense geographically if a move is made.

The B1G could also work until a trip to USC or UCLA comes into play.

It will all come down to the best balance of academic reputation, sports, and revenue. The best way to generate revenues will be measured by butts in the seats.

Big 12 was baffling at best. It's also why I'm scratching my head over the California schools going to the B1G.

I have long believed in regional rivalries, opposing conference expansions requiring extreme long-distance travel. Hence, why, if Clemson makes a move, membership in the SEC would be our best option...if available.

In terms of location, the SEC makes more sense than the ACC does for Clemson. There would be no more trips to Syracuse, Boston, and Pitt.

In the big picture, fans traveling are not going to move the financial needle. It is all about TV and $. Yes, it is much more inconvenient. There was a day, not too long ago, where I would go to all the Clemson games. Ok, maybe 30 years ago. Now, like the playoffs, you will be forced to pick and choose the games you attend,
I don’t like what has transpired, I don’t like paying players, I don’t like transfer rules - but at the moment, I still like college football. But the truth to that statement, is that I am losing my love for it, year by year.
I loved the pomp and excitement of home games. The fun and travel to away games. The fun trash talking to in conference rivals at the games, and being civil about it.
I don’t know if it is my age (64) or all of the woke, snowflake bs going on where everything is now “acceptable”, or the new rules and ways to cheat - but I have just about had enough. Maybe when the season starts I will feel different. I hope so.

Ticket prices at home are going to be hard to get and very expensive with both the B1G and SEC fans traveling far more than any ACC school minus Florida St and maybe a few more that may travel more often than the majority.

Also not real sure they care much about the ones attending the games. Seats could be empty (not preferred of course) and with the tv money they are talking about the universities will be just fine.

And you are correct. Seats will be empty and should. They don’t need fans or alumni, they have NIL money. They don’t need booster money anymore. They should just play all their games in Birmingham Al just like the USFL. That’s what ESPN wants

ESPN has always featured the traditions and pageantry of college football. Hopefully, that continues. I don't see it ever moving to one location.

That's probably the best statement you'll ever hear from me about ESPN.

I have to question that.

Doesn't Clemson take in a gate of about $4-5 M per home game, plus vendor fees, parking, and support for the local community? If the sell-outs stop and demand drops, it will make a significant difference in revenue.

If ticket revenue is $30M per year (I'm guessing), it's less than TV money, but it's not a satisfactory trade-off of one for the other.

We’ll probably end up purchasing holograms…

Jul 4, 2022, 9:57 AM

Or something like that…they’ll use some CGI to fill the seats with all that $ they have.
I really don’t think the powers that be have thought this all the way through.
The other sports involved may need an alternative. Attendance might start to look like mid-tier bowl games.
Basically the travel will be like the NFL, I guess. Those with the $ can get there…the rest of us adjust the foil on the antenna

What about the players? Can Clemson play up to their potential after flying to California to play a Saturday night football game. This isn’t a bowl game. Fly out on Thursday. Home Sunday. That will be an issue.

On television...Which is sort of the objective by the group pulling the strings here.

Haven't really thought about that.

Do USC/UCLA fans travel?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Attended the 100th Clemson vs. USC game on a broken ankle from 8 hours earlier. Got a recliner in the endzone for the 100th game...it was worth it. Story in Profile.

Well, if they cared anything about fans I guess it could make a difference. Just send us your money and shut up!
