how does it hold up against what you get in some italian restaurants? I'd assume it's probably a little harder, which would take away from it.

Creamy fluffy. The texture is similar to gelato i get at the gelato shop up the street. Pretty legit. I've been eating Talenti, which is more like ice cream. Just had the Whole Foods one for the first time. It had more of the gelato texture.
