back story

Oct 7, 2016, 6:25 PM

Hurdich, who is deaf and spoke through an interpreter, said he is honored to provide the service to the more than 68,000 people with hearing disabilities in the state. While gaining attention on social media for what some referred to as his exaggerated motions, Hurdich said he is trying to convey the emotion behind what the governor and other state officials say in their press conferences.

“I do a lot of facial expressions and I know people are making comments about how expressive I am,” he said. “It’s the same as vocal intonation — if someone is very calm, my signing will be very calm. The signing needs to match the intent.”

Shonna Magee, the statewide coordinator of the agency’s deaf and hard-of-hearing services, sits in front of Hurdich and interprets what state officials are saying, along with other critical information.

That makes sense, just the first time I've ever seen it before while doing sign for someone else. I used to work with a guy that was deaf and looking back I do remember him having a very expressive face. I think its the loss of one sense that sometimes increases other ones.

he does not look like a dork..

he looks like someone that has never heard the spoken word but is talented enough to be able to express the emotion of a conversation to other deaf people.

Even though he knows people are making fun of him, he still has the courage and pride to keep doing it.

Without his expressions, the deaf would probably interpret what is being said as blah blah blah...blah blah and not recognize the severity of what is happening right now

He's actually deaf himself. He is signed by someone in front of him, then he signs. They said it is because he can translate it more clearly to the deaf.

I'm not making fun of him, but I can't even concentrate on what Haley is saying when watching him. It's like I'm being hypnotized!
