Has the NIL/Portal completely ruined College Football for anyone else?

Mar 31, 2022, 9:53 PM

I use to get so #### excited this time of the year with Spring ball kicking off, but I’m honestly having trouble even caring much anymore because the portal and NIL have just turned me off so much. It’s essentially just the NFL with unrestricted free agency now. The art of recruiting is just gonna become who’s willing
to write the biggest check.

Meh gives us something more to talk about until the fall. I don’t like it at all, but it hasn’t really ruined anything for me. I am disappointed to see these young men pisssing away their education and future for pipe dreams, but to each his own

I think when Dave said that Matayo Uiagalelei’s recruitment was more about the NIL than what school he liked best that was the tipping point for me.

Yea his twitter posts make me cringe. NIL hasn't ruined it for me yet. I am hoping that at some point some of this will be regulated so it cannot be a recruiting advantage and it is just more about kids being able to make money based off of their profitability. Schools should not be able to pull funds together to attract better players. I don't think it was intended to work that way and hopefully will be fixed at some point.

I agree though I am sick of seeing Big Dave's Blueprint. He's kinda a clown like Lavar Ball.

It’s really put a damper on everything for me but I’ll come around eventually because I have to. I still love college football.

Football was the same great game last fall and there is no reason to believe to be great this coming season as well.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep, because I can tell Clemson is

Mar 31, 2022, 10:42 PM

Not going to play the game. Glad we won our titles just before all of this crap.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Clemson will continue to win.

This isn’t going to magically make other programs great.
It’s more likely to get most of them into a huge mess with absolutely no continuity.

Clemson will be the steady program, and will be just fine.

This will all be very interesting to watch.

No, not yet but it's steadily working at it.
I've gone from a 110% to about a 90 thus far.

It’s basically become the NFL without a salary cap. Anyone that can’t see that is wearing blinders. Can’t believe any college football fan thought this was a good idea.

Absolutely
Clemson will be an afterthought,in a few years. I have lost enthusiasm for the game and it is sad, almost like losing a long time friend.

Re: Has the NIL/Portal completely ruined College Football for anyone else?

Mar 31, 2022, 11:49 PM

No, simply because we as individual's have no control over where a recruit decides to go ,or which corporation/company pays him NIL crazy money any more than which NFL pro team drafts your favorite quarterback when his collegiate career ends.
When it comes to football I have only one rule of thumb; When Clemson plays it's last game then the season is over, and when my pro team wins it's last game ,or is eliminated from the playoff's the season is over.
PERIOD.

I’m most excited to see Streeter’s offense

Apr 1, 2022, 12:22 AM

He’s doing several logical things the armchair coaches have wanted for years. He’s also simplifying things so we can play fast and use tempo. We are going to throw into the middle of the field. So many good offenses have shallow drag routes for a late outlet over the middle. It can work against zone or man but you never saw us do it.

The art of recruiting will become who can get top players despite not writing the biggest check.

Problem is that the big players are gonna want the big checks. In a few seasons Texas A&M, Southern Cal, Oregon, Texas will all have the best teams money can buy.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Until that happens, enjoy it! We don't know that what you're saying

Apr 1, 2022, 4:12 AM

will come to fruition.

The game will still be here. It'll still come down to X's and O's and it's still the best game on earth!

Enjoy the ride and don't look at it as being the end!

Go Tigers AND Stay Well Clemson Nation!

Of Course. But the question should be addressed to the spineless NCAA-they have been
at it for some time.

Certainly not giving 110% anymore

Apr 1, 2022, 8:31 AM

Yep. Before COVID even, my mother-in-law, who lives with us and is a big fan, is in her 80's and was for the first time ever skipping games, mostly the early season (hottest) non-conference games. Then COVID showed us all that a big TV and handy bathroom beats lugging 1/2 ton of stuff to setup a tailgate that consumes 12+ hours. NIL made us rethink our donations...already not buying season tickets anymore so now if the players already can make $millions in NIL they don't need our donations.

Had already given up basketball, it was just too hard to make the trips from Atlanta for every game, but we did that for about 15 years. Getting screwed in the first reseating made us mad, getting screwed in the second reseating was the last straw.

Ironically, we are on the cusp of retirement, and have moved to within 30 minute drive of campus (just like we always planned!) and now NIL and other actions have made us not be killing ourselves to get to games, saving thousands and thousands of dollars in the process.

Went to the football game vs BC last year, looking at hitting some baseball maybe softball games this spring, but don't expect to ever be like we were pre-COVID, pre-NIL.

I wouldn’t say it has ruined it for me yet, but between NIL and the transfer portal have definitely taken some excitement out of the game for me.

No, same thing that was going on before , it’s just happening out in the open now, and the numbers are a bit larger.

Doesn’t change the fact that players have to make plays, and doesn’t take away from the joy of stomping the Coots every November

Having to suffer through terrible QB play has done more to ruin college FB for me than the NIL. Hopefully we have the worst of that behind us.

Seems to go hand in hand with so many things today that are just upside down. Hate to see it, and seems wrong.

No. It hasn't ruined a thing. Yet.

Apr 1, 2022, 6:44 PM

Right now feels like a giant wave of chaos roiling through with how it's playing out with little to zero parameters, so I really appreciate the rock that our program sits on, as a foundation, while this blows through and settles. That's thanks to Dabo and Iptay and the AD and all of Clemson nation really.

We're taking a pro approach with an emphasis on training kids how to be smart with image and all that comes with by creating a program and office and facilities. If recent history is any gauge it will be an A+ outfit in terms of quality.

Winning in college isn't all about the talent, though you have to have your share, especially QB, it's about playing lights out for each other as a unit with a common, selfless goal, and never quitting til the end. I feel like Dabo and Company will continue to attract dudes and hosses with major game that are in it to win it. Once this initial NIL wave rolls out or settles, we'll be standing tall ready to roll, still.

If we can't establish some competitive guidelines though as an NCAA collective over these next few years, then I do worry about the whole thing eating itself. The biggest obstacle I see is greed, and not from the kids (or their parents), but from the institutions that have the size and alumni base to sustain rampant expenditures and resist a model that keeps the whole shebang happy and healthy.
