It has a new name but is still used widely.
It is now called H-back.
Fullback was simply somebody who blocked out of the backfield and got 1 goal line carry per season.
An H-back is asked to block from the backfield, catch passes from the backfield, block on the end of the line like a TE, block in the slot, catch passes from the slot and very rarely may be given a carry out of the backfield.
A traditional fullback isn't diversified enough for today's college football offenses.

1 carry per season? I guess you didn’t watch much Clemson football prior to the spread? Ever hear of Jeff McCall, Chris Lancaster, Terrance Mack, Wesley McFadden, Tracy Johnson? Those were some horses at FB and we rode em often. They were a big part of our offense.

I would like to see a fullback in some of our sets. Having that brutal blocking back like in the 80s was key to a strong running game.

Often wondered if a team that had more weapons on the outside than say: Wisconsin! If they committed to a big old school OL that just ran the ball over and over against these "light in the pants" defenses of today built to stop the spread - what would it look like?
Alabama - closest thing to it! But, they were more pass only if necessary until Saban got beat by the spread a few times. Then he adapted and started dominating.
I don't think you could "strictly run it" in practice w/o having some spread principles and route tree. But, lean more 70/30 run/pass. With the 70% being "POWER FOOTBALL" not zone read or gimmick run plays!
30% of the time you pass it using the most up-to-date passing techniques that defenses haven't caught up to quite yet.
Run it well enough and it leads to your WR's having 1 on 1 on the outside. A place like Clemson would have the athletic type WR's to pull it off and devastate teams that load the box! Assuming the QB on those 30% pass plays is "just simply accurate enough to give the Tigers WR the best opportunity to catch it"!
One can dream anyway!

Only at some schools. If you watched bowl games and NFL games, teams still use fullbacks, H backs or whatever you call them. Anytime you give a defense another option to defend, it spreads them more.

I know Wisconsin uses it quite a bit.
I know we used one a lot during the Deshaun years. JC Chalk (#25) would line up in the backfield or at the TE spot on most of our plays.
Honestly I think FB is one of the most underrated positions in an offense and if teams can find a way to use them, they can become a big advantage for any offense.
Side note - I saw something one time where the 95' Nebraska team had like 9 fullbacks on their roster.

Yes that’s the last fullbacks that I can remember. Seems to be a huge piece of the offense the service academies run. We were that team in the 80’s. Passing was not a huge part of our game plan.

We had a true FB Chad Diehl (sp?) in the Bowden days. He was a bruiser I think out of Byrnes or Dorman. Saw very little action because of our offense.

This thread made me search him to jog my memory. He was there and did a lot of lead blocking both from the true FB and H-back (motion) position for James Davis and CJ. There’s an 8 minute highlight video for Chad on YouTube that is amazing. It is one decleater knockdown block after the other. I had forgotten how much of a thumper he was!

One of the most mammoth FB’s I remember seeing semi recently was when Georgia came in to play us around 2013 or 2014. He was the FB with Gurley the Tailback. He was an absolute beast. I think his name may have been Hicks? He gave us all manner of distress that night running it up the gut and catching passes, thumping for Gurley. My oh my he was a specimen at prototypical pro style FB!

Seems SC had a bruiser or 2 when Holtz was there but do not remember their names. Just remember them having some size in the backfield.

Yes!
Everybody just uses TE now; when a play calls for a lead blocker! Even lining them up in the backfield sometimes.
