Has the ACC ever had a commissioner you liked?

In the last few days, I've seen Phillips referred to as incapable, clueless, and a liar. When he was hired, he was criticized for being a "corporate type from ESPN" who doesn't understand the ACC.

Prior to that, I read thousands of criticisms here of Swofford. He was criticized for prioritizing the NC schools, hurting Clemson, and even falsely accused of lobbying for an additional year of probation for Clemson in the 1980s. He is still criticized routinely to this day.

I am sure there was criticism of Corrigan here too.

So tell me, do you think every ACC commissioner is truly that horrible? Because it seems like he is simply an easy target, especially when playing up the purported anti-Clemson bias from the conference.

I can't say that I disliked every commissioner. I don't remember every ACC commissioner. What I can say is that Swoffie was extremely short-sighted when it came to managing the ACC. The ACC is covered in his bandaids--all of which are close to breaking loose.

What should Swofford have done differently?

He oversaw ACC expansion, taking the conference from 9 teams when he became commissioner to include Miami, Virginia Tech, and Boston College, and later Syracuse, Pittsburgh, and Louisville. Adding Notre Dame, while not ideal since they didn't join for football, was still a net win for the conference whether people here want to admit it or not.

During an era when conference expansion was happening quickly, he poached three very good football programs in Miami, VT, and BC. At the time, those were really strong additions. Louisville was also a fairly strong football program when they were added, while Syracuse and Pittsburgh had some decent teams in the not-too-distant past.

Swofford had no idea that those teams would see their football success decrease after joining. Who saw Miami and Virginia Tech declining like they did? Boston College went from a consistent top 20 team to a weak football program. And FSU also declined relatively quickly toward the end of Bobby Bowden's tenure.

I don't think Swofford is perfect, but it's hard to knock him when key member schools made bad decisions for their football program. Regardless, the ACC certainly allowed Clemson to become an elite football program and win national championships, so we can't complain too much.

In terms of other sports, which I understand some of you don't care about, the ACC offers outstanding competition in many of them, including multiple national champions.

It just feels like Swofford's tenure gets boiled down to "blah blah SEC, blah blah he doesn't like Clemson," with little to no actual reason for disliking him.

Besides, if the grant of rights was so awful, Clemson shouldn't have signed it. But we did, and the powers that be (including Dabo) thought it was great. So if we don't like our current position, and want to blame someone, perhaps we should blame ourselves too.

There should never have been an extension of the GOR agreement through 2036. At that point (2016), the landscape of college sports was growing and changing rapidly. Had the original GOR agreement been allowed to expire in 2027, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

While the ACC did get a handful of decent new members, the rest (along with some original ACC members) have been a financial drag on the conference.

Sure, in hindsight the GOR wasn't great.

But at the time, it made a lot of sense for the ACC and its member institutions. If it didn't, why would it have been proposed and then unanimously signed? ACC members obviously felt that it was a good idea, so if we're going to blame Swofford for that then we need to hold all the member schools - including Clemson - just as responsible.

Quote "The ACC certainly ALLOWED Clemosn to become a football power"! Oh yes Judge, it was the ACC that "allowed" us to become what we are! It does not surprise me one bit that you would fall in Swoffords corner. Any man that believes Brad is a better ambassador and coach for Clemson University would fall into the Swofford ilk! Go ask Swofford why the contract took so long to begin with! Surely it had nothing to do with his sons ties to Jefferson Pilot!

You can critique my wording all you want

May 17, 2023, 2:21 PM

but the point is that the ACC has never kept Clemson from becoming national champions. We've been able to accomplish everything we wanted in football as an ACC member.

It's reasonable to say that we've likely had more success as a result of being in the ACC than if we were in a stronger football conference like the SEC or Big 10.

For the record, I'm in Clemson's corner, not Swofford's corner. But the criticism of him here is mostly unjustified and/or misplaced.

Phillips inherited a total s*** show from Swofford, so no one should hold him responsible for the current mess and, honestly, I'm not sure there is much he can do to fix it.

May 17, 2023, 12:31 PM [ in reply to In fairness... ]

The ACC was incredibly proactive, getting Miami, VT, Syracuse and BC….Miami and VT were recent football powers when it happened, BC was above respectable and Syracuse was better than current. It was a great move that just really hasn't panned out on the field the way it was envisioned the last almost 20 years.

The ACC schools don't, and never have had, the following that other football power conferences have, the SEC and B1G. The school enrollments are smaller, the alumni base smaller, etc, so the eyeballs aren't there unless there's pure power out of football.

When he got ND, it was the only move he had, and its kept the conference together. At the end of the day, the Grant of Rights exist for Clemson because the Clemson President signed it. So when he did, both times, clearly he thought through the plusses and minuses of going along with it, based on the market and clemsons positioning at the time. So if there is a single person to blame, and Im not one to hold that opinion, I do believe if I did the crisis of conference affiliation and contract lies at the feet of our school President and Board of Trustees. They entered the long term contract.

except for Brad Brownell?

You have continually thrown shade on Dabo, Cliff Ellis, Rick Barnes and Oliver Purnell to defend your hero and give Clemson basketball illegitimate reasons to continue to wallow in mediocrity.

So tell me do you think that the good people on Tigernet have not caught on to your little games yet?
