Has Grisham bungled the recruitment of WR Antonio Williams?

Here is a 4 star guy from Dutch Fork (the best team in the state by a lot) who IMO is the best WR in the state (and I don't think it's close) yet he doesn't have a Clemson offer because we prioritize the "basketball player" looking WR first. We just have too many of those guys. It looks like he'll finally get the offer if we miss on Greene (another tall WR) which many are speculating, but it may be too little too late. Williams represents exactly the type of WR we are missing on the team. He looks and plays like a Alabama WR: 6', 180-190 lbs, quick, fast and easily gets separation. That's exactly what need to diversify our WR room.

It's not that simple. Position coaches recruit more than their position. They recruit an area for all positions. Now, he might want to prioritize certain players, but the HC and OC also have input.

I realize TE and Dabo are highly involved too

However, I don't get how we haven't seem to prioritize an elite WR with his skill set in a while. If we were heavy in the mix with a guy like Evan Stewart from Texas, I'd get maybe having Antonio on the back burner. However, I can't see how us going after another 6'3/6'4, not that fast, outside guy makes sense when you look at our roster.

I have been to a few Dutch Fork games (my son played there and now plays at Furman) and Antonio is as good of a player as I have seen come through DF (and there have been a lot over last 10 years). I don't know exactly all the variables a college recruiter looks at but Antonio has the fastest first 10 yards I have seen in a long time. He is not as fast as Jalin Hyatt was in 40 (Hyatt had fastest time in nation at Rivals camp) but Williams burst is amazing. He seems to run a punt back every game. It would seem to me he is exactly what we need in the slot.

And he really likes Clemson. My daughter is still at Dutch Fork and he told her how much he likes Clemson.

Maybe it's a situation like Trenton Simpson where the coaches are telling him to be patient. You would hate to lose a quality player like that.

Even if so, I believe that’s baked into the questions of the OP; why aren’t we identifying and having a top priority for smaller faster WR as well as the tall boundary WRs?

No one can argue that you need multiple different types of WR to make your offense work and it seems obvious to myself as well as others on this board that the lack of a smaller, shifter reciever to work the slot has hurt this offense. Before you reply with the names of players who are hurt that could be playing the slot, they weren’t PRIORITY reciever targets. We have prioritized recruiting a certain body type and it has caught up with our offense.

He has a lot Gamecocks in his ear. I love Coach Barnes (DF WR coach) but he is a former Gamecock and the Kimrey's have ties to DF with Coach Knotts.

I will have to get my daughter to gather some intel.

I think Partially, but it’s also systemic on Clemson’s behalf. The coaches have a method that’s worked for them, but it can’t resonate well with all recruits who get contacted late in the cycle.

I look at this like I’m a recruit. I get it, Clemson does it their way. But this is the message I would get is: “You’re not like our first, second, or third choice, but if we get screwed elsewhere then we will settle for you.”

I wouldn’t look at it like getting a Clemson offer is some blessing after I’ve expressed how much I like Clemson. Either you believe in me and what I can do or you don’t.

Id feel better about it if I felt like I was a top priority instead of last resort. But Clemson has a ton to offer.

His offers aren’t too shabby tho. ND, UGA, USC, Ore… I think he’ll be fine.

And being close to the situation that is what people in his ear are telling him. I do think there is some hope, as I stated above, as he genuinely likes Clemson but what I am hearing is he is getting irritated by the no offer and it is playing into those in his ear to forget about Clemson.

But it’s also being honest with the recruit that he is going to have to come in and work to earn playing time. Not building him up to expect something he is not going to get without working and maybe waiting for it. Might help keep him from ending up in the portal because he started with false expectations. A lot of recruits praise the “genuine” feeling they get from the Clemson coaches. Lying to them about their standing and blowing smoke up their tails doesn’t give a recruit that feeling or earn you that reputation. These kids know where they stand. He may be the best WR in SC but we don’t just recruit the state these days. Lots of competition.

I mean different strategies for sure and Clemson's has worked well over the years so who knows. He could have easily already committed, so he maybe holding out for the Clemson offer. I know he likes Alabama too.

I will tell you though he is a special, special talent and would be in any state. I never thought I would see someone again takeover games like Bryce Thompson did in HS but Antonio is just unstoppable at times. It blew me away watching him in person. Watch some highlights. And yes DF has not had much competition so we will see what he does in the rest of the playoffs but I think not getting him would be a big miss. But, I also trust our coaches and they tend to get it right most of the time.

I hear you Rhett, but I do not see the talent on the field. Unsure J. Ross is ready for the NFL due to injury and lost season at QB. Ngata and EJ also have skill sets but have injuries and have lost a year. I just don't see the WR talent on the field that Clemson coaches talk about.

Since you are clueless I will give the 411. The issue is not CTG. The issue is Dabo. He limits the number of offers we make which often causes us to be short handed unless you need a bunch of 5-8 WRs. We have room for and need both Williams and Greene but Dabo has to ok the offers.

Now you know…

We have a higher priority target ahead of him and coaches have been upfront with him since day 1. We’ll either get our first choice or miss and offer Williams. Then it would be on him to commit here or elsewhere.

It’s possible, that he doesn’t like not being our first option and goes elsewhere. If that’s the case, then I wouldn’t consider that bungled. Coaches will have gone after the best player and been upfront about it.

Sometimes coaches hit it out of the park and other times they strike out but they’ve gotta keep swinging and we’ll get our fair share of elite recruits.

Dabo controls who gets offers and when, that is not really hidden info... he once joked that Brent would offer everyone if Dabo did not limit who he could offer. However, Brent has more flexibility on who he is able to offer than the offensive staff does. For example, Clemson literally has only 11 offers to Junior players on offense, that is way to low IMO and needs to change but I digress.

Back to Williams, Grisham loves Williams and per someone close to Williams Grisham is the coach that reaches out to the family the most, if not one of the most, I get the sense that Grisham would have offered Williams already, and Grisham also would have offered Greene in the Spring, but the second one is more of a personal opinion rather than something I have heard.

The staff must hold back schollies for 2* and 3* legacies, as well as coaches relatives. You can't just give them away to in-state, 4* players (who should be offered almost automatically) who might go to another regular opponent, particularly USuCk, and haunt the Tigers for 3-4 years. Arrogance, ignorance and/or just plain nepotism ... take your pick!

My question is why are we not offering both? Essentially, we are looking at them for 2 different positions. We don't narrow the defensive end and defensive tackle to d-line for our recruiting numbers.

We are going to have to settle on some recruits most likely this year, I believe. I just don't see us getting the numbers without settling on the quality of recruit this year. Why not settle on the numbers being a little skewed position wise instead?

flag link

Exactly. We should have had at least 2 offers out. Worst case

Nov 18, 2021, 11:12 AM

From a #s standpoint from the coaches view, they get both and gasp Drew or Will B don’t have a scholarship next season or consider -At least 1 of the 8 or so others is sure to transfer in today’s environment. Coaching staff is not being aggressive or innovative on the recruiting front. Can’t happen in today’s game. If we miss on Williams, better off grabbing a guy from the portal that has a year or 2 left so you have the #s with experience and wait for that guy to cycle through to go after another HS. I would rather have a transfer from say SU or Miami that’s older for 1-2 years vs scraping the barrel for a 1-2* HS that’s going to eat up a spot for 5 years

Now will Antonio accept the offer?

Agree. Imo, we sure are missing Jeff Scott and Marion Hobby. They didn't always get the shinny star, but the rusty old star sure had a way of shinning up nicely. And those rusty stars turned out to have pretty good long fruitful NFL careers.

And no, I'm not talking about the walk ons that every now and then turn into a Hunter. I'm talking they both had a knack at identifying raw talent that didn't have a bunch of shinny stars coming out of HS.
