Has DJ Started His Last Game?

Dec 30, 2021, 10:31 AM

I keep hoping for this kid to live up to his hype but I think he's only capable of minor improvements that won't be enough for the teams big game needs.

Streeter did a good job of calling the game based on DJ's ability by not putting everything on his shoulders. He dialed up a field position games that worked well enough.

Dabo proved with the Kelly Bryant situation that he is willing to change QB's if needed. He was "stuck" with DJ because there was really no solid backup to truly challenge DJ.

Our Sept. Schedule is pretty manageable with GT, La Tech, Furman and a trip to South Bend Oct. 5th.

It's going to be interesting to see what happens in the Spring with Cade Klubnik enrolling next month and getting into the playbook so soon. DJ's position was never challenged until this coming season.

If I were guessing and assuming DJ doesn't transfer, Dabo will start DJ but give CK a lot of looks in the first 3 games like he did with Kelly Bryant.

How much can he improve over the off

Dec 30, 2021, 10:34 AM

season? That is the question. Experience in an adverse season may give him an edge going into 2022. We will see. Cade is a baller.

He Should Be Able to Improve a lot!

Dec 30, 2021, 3:43 PM

Are you suggesting that a player can only improve in real games? Why have Practice? Between now and September DJ had better spend that time mastering his craft instead of getting full on Dr, Pepper's and Bojongels

My guess would be it's probably not going to take long for DJ to realize he's been outrecruited, if Klubnick is everything he's touted as. As soon as Spring it's likely to be obvious there's a glaring talent gap there and the writing will be on the wall...and that will likely be it for DJU at Clemson.

Where does he go then? No clue. But it'll likely take a serious QB whisperer to put DJU's game back together. It might still happen. But I think DJU is where he is because, well, that's where his game is. He just isn't processing information right now and he clearly doesn't trust his eyes, and his accuracy is highly suspect.

As for DJ's accuracy problems, it was obvious that after the first couple of games he had the yips. For the last few games, his damaged index finger was clearly in play.

Between Spring practice, Summer camp, and the first game or two of 2022 season we'll learn whether DJ's problems from 2021 are fixable ... or simply part of DJ's makeup.

Maybe C.Klubnik does lights out during Spring practice, but I'm betting that DJ will perform comparably (or a little better) than the brand-new C.Klubnik during Spring practice. DJ won't transfer out until end of summer at the earliest, and may end up starting the entire 2022 season and playing well.

I realize that this isn't the popular take here on TNet, but it will all play out soon enough.

Better hope this is not the case. We are back to the same situation if that happens. A starter and then not much. I'm of the opinion that an FBS transfer QB might be a good fit at Clemson. Adding some experience to the QB group and another capable just in case guy.

If he transfers…

Dec 30, 2021, 4:36 PM [ in reply to Re: Has DJ Started His Last Game? ]

because he was beaten out of the job by a true freshman, won’t that pretty much prove that just like Kelly B, he is not a top level QB?

If there’s ever gonna be a “QB whisperer” for this guy it must be ASAP… not after a transfer to Duke or App State. And if he is serious about being a QB in the league, IMO he’s better off staying at Clemson and battling CK to keep/get his starting job back. Otherwise he can go the Kelly B/Chase B route and fade into oblivion.

Probably not... I expect he'll start for most of next season. Hopefully he'll get healthy in the off-season and come back better than ever.

The number to beat is 40.9. All these mofos on this site talking about play calling and how TE did not do a great job and Streeter is just another cut from the TE tree, c'mon man these guys were beyond handcuffed this year at the quarterback position. DJ had a QBR of 40.9 this year. Name a team that could have a quarterback with a QBR at 40.9 and win 10 games. Be dayum thankful for what the Tigers have and are continuing to build.

Has he started his last game no, is he on the clock absolutely.

A lot is going to be determined on how bad DJ wants to compete. Cade is coming to be the starter if DJ works hard and the game slows down and he loses 25 pounds then maybe he becomes what many thought he’d be if not Cade will start by game four. I’m excited to see how it plays out. All positions are up for grab now so we will see who wants to play.

I think DJ will get at least the first game start next season. Not saying I agree but I think they will make him lose his job based on actual game performance instead of spring/summer practices.

With some of the 3rd and long calls last night

Dec 30, 2021, 11:03 AM

I dont see how the coaching staff can justify starting him when they clearly don't even trust him.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You make a good point but he'll start the first game...

Dec 30, 2021, 7:07 PM

and then lose the job from there. Dabo will give DJ every chance to start but if Cade is worth a dime, he'll take over by the 4th game at the latest.

IDK

Yesterday, DJ was NOT the bottleneck for the offense. I think DJ has evolved a lot. His reads yesterday were a lot better than previous games and even the INT was actually some hustle from the ISU linebacker. DJ should have likely tossed it to pace but it wasn't a bad decision (bad off-footed off shoulder pass). The Collins catch was likely his worst decision but he didn't go down immediately either. Even taking the sack late in the 4th was better. Shipley was open enough but if he missed that, it would have been a pick 6. So not bad decision even if it was ugly.

The PORTAL takes away the coaches to take a look at anyone but the starter, DJU, because if, like Bryant, he's demoted to #2 for just one game, he's gone. DJ should probably check with KB and see how that worked out for him.

If he can go from an outstanding freshman year to a putrid sophomore year that quick, why can’t he go back to the drawing board and fix it?

To me it looks like DJ getting healthy, footwork, reads, and confidence. All can be improved.

Maybe put the NIL stuff on the back burner.

So basically he just needs to fix everything.

Trevor took over in game 4. DJ will start the first couple of games. I am expecting DJ to put up a fight to remain the starter. I
am going to beg the Clemson faithful to not boo DJ if he plays poorly. Dabo will make the switch if necessary.

That is up to DJ...it's all about competition

Dec 30, 2021, 4:30 PM

Let our 150 win Head Coach do his job and may the best man win the job in the Spring/Fall.

It's up to DJ this winter to work harder than he's ever worked before.
