Swinney says he is proud of the team, proud of defense. Didn't do a lot of things the way he wants but found a way to win. Defense didn't play well in spots. Effort was incredible.

Goes back to saying effort was great. But to win a game like that and be able to teach these guys and continue to grow is a "blessing." Too many mistakes offensively. Fumbles. Critical penalties.

Allowed no sacks and had no negative plays, so that was a positive. QB run was a good spot for them. Will Shipley was tremendous. Missed assignments. Missed plays. Fundamentals. Bad ball security. Will have to play a lot better starting this week

It may just be me but a fumble and safety at the end of the game, a fumble by DJ, QB and receivers not on the same page, and lost yardage a couple times by Dixon are negative.

They have Bryan Bresee in a shoulder brace, and if it gets bent back a certain way he really feels the pain. Swinney says Bresee is "amazing" and the team has had a bunch of shoulder injuries this year. But Bresee is playing fast and disruptive. He is a special player.

If only that were true. When they know who to block and have the proper angle and technique, they still get beat, almost every time. It is either a talent deficiency, lack of coaching or both. I think Robbie has a soft bunch, he needs to insert a shoe into a couple of buttocks!

Swinney says DJ continued to get better. But he had two balls on the ground. He was ok passing (18 for 25), he missed three throws, however, and that would have made it a great day. Proud of his toughness and will to win. He made some great runs that sparked the team. Showed great heart and leadership. And it's not just DJ, it is everybody around him. It's just a matter of time before he puts it all together,

I don't know that we made any adjustments. Maybe we didn't need to make any. What I do know is that we had 3 possessions and 150 yards in the second half. That's 50yds/possession. For a normal game of 12-15 possessions, that's a rate of 600 yds/game. But you guys act like we kept going 3 and out and didn't move the ball at all. Our downfield passing game needs a lot of improvement if we want to succeed this year. I agree with that. But LOL at complaining about the offense in the 2nd half which actually moved the ball down the field.

Yes, I think it’s bad for a team of 4 and 5 stars on offense

Sep 20, 2021, 12:08 AM

against a defense with mostly 3 star players.

I would expect our coaching staff which includes the third highest paid head coach and the highest paid offensive coordinator in college football to have a better game plan than they did, and if that didn’t work, to be able to make adjustments.

But they didn’t, and we won despite scoring 14 points only because our defense is outstanding.

And to top it all off, our offensive coordinator said after the game that our offense did a good job. Seriously?!?

Re: Was the lack of second half possessions by design?***

Sep 19, 2021, 7:59 PM

No, the lack of second half possessions is because our defense, while keeping them out of the endzone, was not getting off the field. That and the special teams giving up and onside kick. GT had 6 possessions, and 42 offensive snaps in the second half. Our offense gave us and 11 point lead with 8 minutes left. They didn't touch the ball till it was an 8 point lead with 7 seconds left and the ball on the 1 yard line.

How is the offense suppose to put up monster numbers with only 3 possessions?

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Was the lack of second half possessions by design?***

Sep 19, 2021, 11:27 PM

people are upset because the offense has blown chunks. You seem upset that people are upset. Your contention is that the offense isnt bad but only had bad stats due to the limitations of possession. The problem with your logic is that

1. anyone watching the game can see this offense stinks...OL issues, inability to throw downfield for a VARIETY of reasons, inaccurate passing for balls that go farther than 10 yards (either due to routes, WR play, or QB play...all have been seen), RB rotation that doesnt make sense until the game is on the line, and unwillingness to have the QB run as a component of the scheme until needed to avoid a disaster (two games too late IMO)

2. your assertion incorrectly attributes the lack of possessions solely to our defense not being able to stop GTs offense??? Our O was struggling to move the ball, thus why we had to have long sustained drives that necessitate perfection in order to score, which is also why we didnt. GT knew all they had to do was have one thing go wrong for us on a drive and we werent scoring. We have had several teams over the last 5 years that can go on extended drives, but still put up more than 14 points against a below avg opponent at home. This team had to have 2 drives go perfectly (one only 39 yards) in order to put ANY points on the board against a severely out manned team...people can have a gripe and want to discuss the issue

3. our ONLY bright spot in this game was Shipley, without him we may not have scored a single point, for a team of our caliber and our level of recruiting playing against this GT team that is simply inexcusable, regardless of what defensive presentation GT displayed. The fact our coaches werent able to get any playmaker in a position to show off the 5 star skills is concerning

4. fans arent dumb, they would like to hear some assessment that at least presents acknowledgement of how terrible something obviously is...TE comes across with an air of arrogance that makes it seem he knows SO much more than the dumb media and fans that it isnt possible for our simple minds to comprehend why things didnt work. Einstein said if you cant explain something in words other people can talk to you about, then its YOU who dont understand it well enough. Every time HIS offense struggles its something that was just unavoidable for us, and the staff did everything correct according to their predefined formula. Thats great when you have DW, TL, ETN, etc. covering up for a sorry game preparation against inferior opponents. It doesnt work so well against good to great teams...and now apparently mediocre ones.

5. you are right though, 3 possessions in a half is not a lot of data points to go by, which may have been a good thing for the way the offense had played this season. They have given up 9 points this year to the defense giving up 12. Our offense has only scored 17 points and given up 9 against FBS opponents! Adjustments arent coming quick enough in the games or overall in the season.

Its ok to acknowledge problems, that is often the first step to correcting them. I am glad they did enough to win, but the performance does not exude confidence we are moving in the right direction to improve enough to win games against opponents that are better than GT.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Was the lack of second half possessions by design?***

Sep 19, 2021, 11:35 PM

My original point in this is that someone said we didn't do anything in the 2 hr delay to make things better. I pointed out that we actually moved the ball pretty well in the 2nd half, and people are losing their minds. Fact is, the offense gave us an 11 point lead with 8 minutes to go. For the rest of the game, GT ran 27 offensive plays to our 1. Those are the facts. Yes, our downfield passing game needs to be opened up. But we don't need this piling on with made up narratives. You disagree?
