Guy Fawkes

Jan 31, 2021, 4:15 PM

Poor old Guy Fawkes, he of the Gunpowder Plot gang. On March 31,1606, he was on a scaffold waiting to be hung but he said. "dadgummit, I ain't letting these guys with the red britches hang me" and he jumped from the scaffold. I don't know how high the scaffold was because I wasn't there to verify all the facts. Well, when he hit the ground he broke his neck. I don't know if he breathed his last breath there or they took him to the nearest M*A*S*H* unit where he later expired. Usually when someone like Guy was charged with a crime against the crown, they were either hung or drawn and quartered.

Now, why in the heck am I so concerned about Guy? Well, one of my ancestors was Robert Catesby. Catesby was considered the mastermind of the Gunpowder Plot. King James was considered a "meanie" by the Catholic Gunpowder gang and they wanted him dead. They had planned to blow up the British Parliament when they were in session on Nov. 5, 1605. Unfortunately, someone leaked the plans of the gang and all hades broke loose. Cousin Robert Catesby, hightailed it on a horse out of London headed back to his home. Several days later some of King James' soldiers found Catesby and beheaded him. They put his head on a fence post and rode away into the sunset.

Everyone of the Gunpowder Plot were eventually caught and were beheaded or drawn and quartered.

I have another story I will post later about The Gunpowder Plot Robert Catesby, a Mark Catesby and another Robert Catesby of recent vintage (now deceased) who I have visited several times in England and here in the states.

I do that ten times a day. The life of Fawkes is an interesting read for those interested in life in the “old world”.
