Gundy Resignation and Venables Quote

Aug 9, 2022, 9:09 AM

So Venables said, "Coach Gundy resigned from the program because he knows what he did was wrong. He chose to read aloud to his players, not once but multiple times, a racially charged word that is objectionable to everyone, and does not reflect the attitude and values of our university or our football program. This is not acceptable. Period. Coach Gundy did the right thing in resigning. He knows our goals for excellence and that coaches have special responsibilities to set an example."

It's apparently not objectionable to the player who was reading it off of his iPad, apparently multiple times on there. It's not objectionable to the MANY players and young men who refer to each other by that same term. It's not objectionable to the MANY players who hear that word (among many others that many would consider objectionable) dozens of times a day on their playlists. No, this word is NOT objectionable to everyone. It's only objectionable when certain people say it, regardless of the context or intent. It apparently DOES reflect the attitude and values of many of these young people who choose to use such a derogatory word to refer to one another. For them, it IS acceptable and quite normal.

Did Coach Gundy himself offend anyone? Was he attacking, degrading or disrespecting someone? Or did some take offense because it shocked them hearing it coming from him, rather than from their likeminded teammates, friends or their favorite rappers or singers?

He should NOT have resigned. There needs to be a conversation about things like this. A word is offensive or it is not. There's no in between. Well, there shouldn't be. But there is. And therein lies the problem and the confusion - and the apparent offense. This could have and should have been a strong teaching point and the beginning of a serious conversation among the team and the staff. But nope - yer OUT! Move along. We shall not discuss this for.... fear of offending someone? Or for fear of trying to better understand one another?

If the word is objectionable to everyone why did the player write it? The people who are suppose to be offended by it say it daily, listen to music with the word in it and listed to celebrities/comedians who use the word constantly.

From what i can tell the only folks who object is the woke crowd but they love to use it to cancel people so its a love/hate relationship.

This is slightly surprising from the guy who goes bat c r a p crazy on poasters who refer to female athletes as “ladies” and calls us old guys with our shirts tucked in and NB sneakers.
This word has been considered inflammatory by many since at least the 1960s and 70s when I was growing up in an area in the Lowcountry that was 93% black. You are correct the outrage is selective and very much based on who says it but I can’t agree it comes from the woke crowd because it was this way for a very long time before anyone ever heard of being “woke”. I believe it is more of a context issue. And if that is the case this is being taken out of context IMO.

Guess i am not surprised that you are surprised. Also not sure why you need to put a prologue before commenting to a post. Guess i hit too close to home...

It feels like this is an OU issue filling space on a Clemson board. Maybe with preseason practice underway we can focus on Clemson. I am sure there are aspects to this story that we don't know and we don't need to know.

This is 2022 and the world is a much more sensitive place than it used to be. It is sad that a coach and teacher of young men would allow this to happen to himself.

aahhh Coach V... this is what you've been trying to avoid

Aug 9, 2022, 10:15 AM

for your whole career.. having to deal with the drama and unrelated to football nonsense. Unfortunately for Coach V its probably the worst its ever been in the amount of balls he'll have to juggle at such a large institution. Our school systems train kids to buck authority and become activists for every single thing they can weaponize that's under the sun. I'm sure the coach was making a joke and the players were laughing about it when he was trying to rap or something but unfortunately there was one person probably that took offense and sold the story. Its the new world of outrage we live in. Our kids have been trained to live this way and they will always be walking around with a chip on their shoulder, which is sad for them. At the end of the day, the coach should've known better.

Just face it, it is only offensive if white people say it. This WOKE crowd looks for anything to blame white people for, however, when it comes to charity, they are the leaders. The WOKE crowd is noticeably absent when it comes to helping others.

Re: Gundy Resignation and Venables Quote

Aug 9, 2022, 10:34 AM

There could be more to this story, but I do agree that simply reading the word as written by someone else should not be treated the same as saying it towards someone in a hateful way.

However, I've never been a fan of "blacks use it in songs or say it to each other so it's a double standard." I'm going to venture a guess that most men on here have talked dirty to their wives and called them names such as slut, #####, #####, etc... but would still get very angry if another man used any of those terms towards their wife. I don't think you'd accept an excuse of "well you use that word towards your wife so it should be ok for me to do it."

I say that while agreeing that things get taken too far such as crashing down on someone's life because it was discovered they said the word 15 years ago or something. I also think someone losing their job because they read aloud something that someone else wrote is silly. I'm just not a fan of the "double standard" argument.

I think I agree with most of your post except your “guess that most men on here have talked dirty to their wives and called them names such as…”

I’ve been married to the same woman for over 38 years and wouldn’t even consider calling her a name like that unless I was trying to make her leave. I highly doubt most men do that. But if they do it may help explain the high divorce rate.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I hate it for BV but he really flubbed this.

Aug 9, 2022, 11:17 AM

First by accepting Gundy's resignation over it, then with the way he portrayed the whole situation following. IMO he took the easy way out, but it only serves the immediacy at hand and not a bigger, longer term picture. Should have taken the route of a two-week suspension or something with a fine to 'contemplate his decision and its consequences' and go from there. Instead he's needlessly alienated a big part of the OU community and hasn't really solved anything in the process.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I disagree with Coach Venables

Aug 9, 2022, 3:08 PM

Gundy's actions weren't "wrong". He read a word, a very popular word and not meant derogatorily, out loud from a player's tablet. And he has to resign because of that? That's ridiculous.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Multiple times?!? So it wasn’t an accident…

Aug 9, 2022, 3:21 PM

That changes everything and the right decision was definitely made. Good job Coach V!

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah can't believe he had done this multiple times

Aug 9, 2022, 3:44 PM

Coach V should have made him resign after the first offense.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Yeah can't believe he had done this multiple times

Aug 9, 2022, 4:14 PM

He hasn't done this multiple times, he read the word aloud multiple times in the same action of reading the players tablet. A player that was not writing notes as other players were during film review, but writing his own dialogue whether it was lyrics, poems, love letter or whatever, but it was during a coaching session and said player was not engaged. So I am sure Gundy's intentions beyond a training exercise was to also admonish the player and maybe even embarrass the player.

Point being, Gundy doesn't have a habit of using language it was a training effort to help player realize he was not listening to the coaching and on top using inappropriate verbiage. No way Gundy should have resigned under these circumstances.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He repeated the word multiple times

Aug 9, 2022, 6:25 PM

It’s not an accident at that point and he should have resigned or been forced to resign.

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Bull ####. Resign for what?

Aug 9, 2022, 7:31 PM

Reading the kid's tablet??? He CLEARLY wasn't using the word in the derogatory manner the snowflakes get upset about. This word is a very, very common part of young people's vernacular, both white and black. When a coach reads the words off a players tablet, then there isn't a darn thing wrong with it. Are you a snowflake? Does that commonly used word make you feel some kind of way? Gimme a break you soft bass turd.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It’s just a word you shouldn’t say any more in any context

Aug 9, 2022, 6:34 PM

As a 50+ southerner, I have heard it and used it at various times in my life, but won’t ever use it again, because I am aware of the consequences. Similar to the Stats and Bars; while it means one thing to me, whether fair or not, it represents something else entirely to a large segment (maybe even a majority) of the population.

Regardless of what Gundy feels in his heart, he should have been more aware of and sensitive to his audience. Same for Danny Pearman.
