Trevor Lawrence responds to criticism of his recent comments

Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence gave a candid interview with Sports Illustrated recently and explained that he has no chip on his shoulder while playing football. “It’s hard to explain that because I want people to know that I’m passionate about what I do and it’s really important to me, but I d Read Update »

Some of the media are morons. Not having a chip on your shoulder doesn't equal a lack of motivation or willingness to work hard to be the best and win.

What he is saying is he’s not conceited and doesn’t feel the need to be a showboat to prove himself unlike some players. When he’s on the field, he operates with a mindset similar to Jordan or Tiger. You’re not getting in his head.

Re: TNET: Trevor Lawrence responds to criticism of his recent comments

Apr 18, 2021, 1:11 PM

That's not what he was being accused of, either, to be fair.

I think we largely took it as an outright insult, & I think that's the natural reaction of our culture now, so that's OK.

But instead, what Riddick was talking about is Trevor seeking an x-factor that takes him closer to his ceiling. To-date, we've simply never seen Trevor hit that ceiling. I'm not sure he's even come close, and & think that's why he's particularly singled out a little bit; he's not just elite, but COULD be transcendent.

A chip or some kind of x-factor is almost always what it takes for the most elite in any sport to reach their potential, from Kobe to Tiger, from Jordan to Schumacher, from Brady to Belitnikoff. Maybe it will be for Trevor too? Maybe not.

Either way, I just hope we see it regardless, know what I mean? Trevor IS different.

Trevor has a depth to him like still water

Apr 17, 2021, 2:49 PM

Some people only see the surface but don’t see all the water below that allows the top water to be calm.

ESPN and “reporters”in general lack any level of substance below the surface.

I like TLs odds to be great.

Apr 17, 2021, 3:15 PM

I like that we got his response, and so quickly, too. The 21st century can be great like that!

However, I DO still want desperately to see Trevor reach his ceiling. That part, to me, does require an x-factor or "chip," as this story was calling it. I'm curious how Trevor would otherwise get there, but only time will tell.

Re: TNET: Trevor Lawrence responds to criticism of his recent comments

Apr 17, 2021, 4:32 PM

Sorry, but let's face it. Trevor would have to manufacture a chip to put on his shoulder. He has been the anointed one since his sophomore year in HS, he has been mentioned as the Top QB in the nation every year, has a good family and structure, and will be the first QB taken in the draft. Not exactly the hard scrabble story that fuels the desire. Besides, you either have it or you dont imo. Lots of dudes who came up hard get paid and then settle.. See Clowney for example. I dont think hes Josh Rosen who was born with a silver spoon and no leadership. Trevor had been at the forefront of the team since his sophomore year, and I see him having a very good career, especially if given a decent team around him!

Re: TNET: Trevor Lawrence responds to criticism of his recent comments

Apr 18, 2021, 12:08 AM

Nobody's doubting Trevor Lawrence will have a good career, though?

I think it's about what it takes to be your actual best. Look, the bottom line is we never got to see Trevor hit his ceiling here at Clemson. Maybe we never will? I think that's the chip or x-factor or whatever you want to call it that gets you there.

Trevor will be more successful than most even on accident. But if he can turn it up to 11, he won't just be special; he'll be transcendent.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You, like many in the media, misinterpret "chip on shoulder"

Apr 18, 2021, 8:04 AM

It means being angry, needing to prove everyone wrong! No, Trevor doesn't have that...doesn't need it, and it would be fake for him to act like he did! He has the skill, smarts, maturity and desire to be the best he can be! As long as he stays healthy, he will succeed!

Re: You, like many in the media, misinterpret "chip on shoulder"

Apr 18, 2021, 12:21 PM

I don't think it means being angry, though? Not at all, and I certainly didn't mean to suggest Trevor should become an angry person (I don't think anyone is suggesting that, FWIW).

And you're right, Trevor doesn't need anything to be better than virtually anybody else. He's gifted and works hard. He'll succeed no matter what.

Again though, what we're talking about is whatever it takes to get him to HIS performance ceiling. We haven't seen it yet, & I've always been hopeful we will one day. I simply don't think it happens for any athlete in any sport on accident, so to speak.

That edge or chip or whatever you want to call it could be the only thing that gets Trevor to his peak, and make no mistake, Trevor's peak could be better than anyone's we've ever seen.

Re: TNET: Trevor Lawrence responds to criticism of his recent comments

Guys like Louis Riddick who played on two non NFL teams after college have to play with a chip because most people don’t think they’re worthy of playing in the NFL at a high level. Everybody thinks the opposite of Trevor and they always have.

Trevor has more self awareness than 99% of the wannabes out there. Louis Riddick is a wannabe.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I found Trevor's comments refreshing

Apr 17, 2021, 5:25 PM

as opposed to athletes who always have to generate someone being the bad guy in their mind to get motivated.

Joe Burrow by contrast, had to create that story about being snubbed by a Nebraska coach when he was like 17 to get motivated.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I found Trevor's comments refreshing

Apr 18, 2021, 7:53 AM

Anyone who doesn't get that about Trevor has obviously never followed his career. That includes members of the media and so-called (mostly NFL) fans.

The ability to remain on an even keel certainly helps in big games.

Lots of ways to show motivation. TL made a lot of great plays at Clemson. I will never forget him running down the GT defensive back after an interception to prevent a pick six. To me, that is doing whatever it takes. Maybe the analysts should watch that play.

Why would he have a chip is exactly what should be his response he has never been doubted. It would be BS. And the football doesn't define me probably comes from his faith which no one will bring up and if so negatively. PS Chris Simms is an absolute idiot.

Still, we never saw Trevor hit his ceiling here at CU.

Maybe we never will? Maybe it's that x-factor or "chip" that gets elite talent to perform at an unprecedented level? Just a thought. Frankly I'd love to see Trevor get closer to his true ceiling, no matter what it takes.

I’ll take the orange colored glasses and admit this. With all the accolades and hype, we got 1 championship. And I’m thankful for that, but he was lost against LSU and looked bad against OSU. Big games and big time competition. I think he still has more to prove and a chip on the shoulder might work well to drive him and make Jacksonville happy.

Re: TNET: Trevor Lawrence responds to criticism of his recent comments

Apr 18, 2021, 10:42 PM

I'll try to explain more of what they mean by that (& for ddclemson), but we've all heard how Trevor throws the fastest football across every league in the sport itself, including faster than any QB on a current roster & even in all of NFL history, yes?

What he didn't seem to get a hold on often enough to be at the pinnacle of his abilities was the deep ball accuracy in particular; he can throw the fastest ball, but can't consistently send it as accurately (he can throw it at that maximum speed at will, though).

Now imagine if he did both. It's not hard to see how he might be more than just elite, but arguably even a new generation-defining talent outright.

That's clearly an over-simplification of just a single aspect of his game, although I do think it may be the outlier for his ceiling. Bottom line, none of it comes from, say, a lack of toughness, or an unwillingness to work & study, things like that (I think many people assumed that's what Riddick meant, for example). The idea of Trevor hitting that ceiling and throwing as often with accuracy as with speed, he could be legendary.

Other athletes CAN'T be what Trevor can. That's the cold, hard truth. Their ceilings are simply lower, and no, we haven't seen him at his best, but if we do, great googly moogly, it will be brilliant!

It's like in high school when you are dating a girl, maybe you are pretty serious with each other. Then, another girl, who either is your girl's rival, or is attracted to you, starts an off-the-wall rumor about you and/or your girl in hopes that it breaks you up.

Totally baseless and never heard of this guy.

So tired of everything anyone does or says being used against them in a four of public opinion. Whenever someone of celebrity status speaks, It in most cases is taken in its worst context to spin things negatively. It makes for terrible news leaves people backtracking and mistrustful that anything they say will be misconstrued.

He had nothing to apologize for. And didn’t need to come back and qualify his statement. Actions no longer define people these days. Words are far more powerful from what I see. It is eroding us.

The more I look at it, the more it seems like we're the ones who made this story a mountain out of a mole hill is all.
We saw it as people criticizing him for being lazy or not having a good work ethic, but I haven't seen anyone ACTUALLY say that or anything like it.
For example, you're judging them here for things you didn't hear them say, know what I mean? Words ARE powerful, you're right about that, including our own. Just something to consider from Coach Swinney! :)

Personally I don't think TL is going to be successful in the league. He's not an alpha dog and you've gotta be that way to succeed 99% of the time. You can tell TL has other thoughts in life beyond football which is great. I think he'll end up in the ministry in a decade from now.

No fault against him....but that's just him.

Nope ... i thought DW4 was going to be great. He has the alpha dog about him. He commands respect and desire and will to win.

TL largely has had his life handed to him based on his natural gifts. I have nothing against him. He's an incredible talent. But he's never struggled in life. And i believe he views he has other things to achieve which are beyond football.

Re: Guess you said that about DW4 too..***

I think you have an excellent point. Frankly I think Trevor would agree with a lot of this, too.

To me though, EVERY legend in any sport has had that edge. But perhaps like Trevor, some of them didn't develop it right away.

Some of them developed it after great tragedy, which obviously nobody wishes on Trevor. But what if it's, say, a baby? Or LOSING Super Bowl (rather than not caring about winning one in the first place)? Maybe one day he'll find that compulsion to finally reach near his performance ceiling, and that is something I'll take however we can get it. Not many people CAN be what Trevor can; whether or not Trevor himself will, that remains to be seen.

But I sure hope so.

Trevor please don't feel that you need to respond to everything the media will say about you. Elsewise
you will not have the time to concentrate on football.

They will bait you into a gotcha every chance they get. The media has proven itself to be the Lowest
of the low to keep employed at any cost.
