73000 remaining after students, let's say 5,000 for visiting team, 1,000 for band members/family and that leaves 68,000.
17,000 Iptay members, let's say an average of 3 tickets per, equals 51,000.
So after students, Iptay, and band/family that leaves 17,000 for general season ticket buyers/single game ticket buyers, as well as opposing fans that purchase tickets on the secondary market.
It seems like a lot but in the grand scheme of things it really isn't.

[Actual Attendance, not ticket sales ] Every game is amazing considering they only have 17000 iptay members.

I believe over 58K tickets are sold as season tickets. The 3 per Iptay member on average is a little low.

Yeah, I was wanting to go a little bit lower than I thought the average would be. I was also just speaking specifically about Iptay season tickets, not just general season tickets that are sold to non-donors.

"Just as many fair weather fans as fairweather students."
I'd argue by definition there are more fairweather fans. But, those fans don't have access to free tickets. And those fans don't get those free tickets and then leave at halftime.
I think the point of the article remains clear. Complaining about the availability of tickets to big games (for free) by students doesn't ring as true when you look at the number of students who, when given those free tickets to 'smaller' games leave early or don't show up.
And that doesn't even mention the fact that the 'smaller' games in question (BC and WAKE) are conference/division opponents.

While the students shouldn't leave, the BC game was an exception I think. I have two kids who are students (they didn't leave) and they said a lot of the kids left because it was over 90 degrees and they were selling water for $4 a bottle. Since they can go out at halftime and get drinks for free and then come back in, many of them left to get free drinks instead of dropping $4 for water. Of course, once out at a tailgater, the incentive to return goes down considerably. Perhaps allowing students (with a Tiger One card) to pay $1 for drinks in the stadium would help. They charged everyone a dollar for water at the Kent State game, so I am sure this wouldn't kill there profits. $4 for water for a college kid is pretty steep...

What you mean is $4 for water is steep when you've gotta have beer money, also, at the tailgates they have said beer that they spent their money on.

But you can bring a bottle of water into the stadium and refill it as many times as you'd like from the water fountains.

True - but when you don't do that and it's 90 degrees and there are free drinks in the parking lot...these are 18-22 year olds - prior planning isn't their strongest skill...

Sure

But it's not really rocket science. They pre-plan for getting tickets. They pre-plan for the before and after game parties. They are capable of doing so when they want to.
And in this case they choose not to, and at least to me, that somewhat nullifies the "They were thirsty" argument for leaving at halftime and not returning.

I am not making excuses for what happened, just passing along what both my kids told me happened with a lot of the students in their sections (One lower deck, one upper deck).
