the Beach Boys. I think it is their guest appearances on Full House when I was a kid that make me equate them with cheesedicks.
Brian Wilson is a genius.

I am just a poor boy Though my story's seldom told I have squandered my resistance For a pocketful of mumbles Such are promises All lies and jest Still, a man hears what he wants to hear And disregards the rest When I left my home and my family I was no more than a boy In the company of strangers In the quiet of the railway station Running scared Laying low, seeking out the poorer quarters Where the ragged people go Looking for the places only they would know Lie la lie, lie la lie la lie la lie Lie la lie, lie la lie la lie la lie, la la lie la lie Asking only workman's wages I come looking for a job But I get no offers Just a come-on from the ###### on Seventh Avenue I do declare, there were times when I was so lonesome I took some comfort there La-la-la-la-la-la-la Now the years are rolling by me They are rocking evenly And I am older than I once was And younger than I'll be But that's not unusual No, it isn't strange After changes upon changes We are more or less the same After changes we are More or less the same Lie la lie, lie la lie la lie la lie Lie la lie, lie la lie la lie la lie, la la lie la lie Lie la lie, lie la lie la lie la lie Lie la lie, lie la lie la lie la lie, la la lie la lie Then I'm laying out my winter clothes Wishing I was gone Going home Where the New York City winters aren't bleeding me Leading me To going home In the clearing stands a boxer And a fighter by his trade And he carries the reminders Of every glove that laid him down And cut him till he cried out In his anger and his shame "I am leaving, I am leaving" But the fighter still remains, he's still remains

"...I just naturally assumed I could drive" -Big Finish by Todd Snider
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-WoUfkU66g
Full Lyrics:
Take your time, tell me slow. Should I stay? And we both know you thought you knew what I was just about to say But you didn’t know, and you always think you do I’ll tell you, I been looking back over my shoulder It’s not you that I’ve got to blame If I could do this all over, I wouldn’t do nothing the same
[Chorus] It seemed like the right thing at the time It seemed like the right thing at the time
I try to remember, it helps me forget, The older I get The older I get, the more I worry, That the more I worry, the older I get and yet, I still worry Ain’t that about a son of a #####, I tell you Some people can’t take no for an answer Some people can’t even take yes for an answer I can’t say for sure how I end up here, but if I had to guess, I guess
[Chorus] It seemed like the right thing at the time It seemed like the right thing at the time
Tryin’ to find some kinda way to cope, You’ve got to admit It ain’t the despair that gets you, it’s the hope When I found myself in possession of these car keys I just naturally assumed that I could drive

John Hiatt, Icy Blue Heart
She came onto him like a slow movin' cold front His beer was warmer than the look in her eyes She sat on a stool, he said, "What do you want?" She said, "Give me a love that don't freeze up inside." He said, "I have melted some hearts in my time, dear But to sit next to you, lord, I shiver and shake And if I knew love, well, I don't think I'd be here Askin' myself if I've got what it takes." To melt your icy blue heart Should I start To turn what's been frozen for years Into a river of tears? "These days we all play cool, calm, and collected Why, our lips could turn blue just shooting the breeze." But under the frost, well, he thought he detected A warm blush of red and a touch of her knee He said, "Girl, you're a beauty like I've never witnessed And I've seen the Northern Lights dance in the air But I've felt the cold that can follow the first kiss And there's not enough heat in the fires burning there." To melt your icy blue heart Should I start To turn what's been frozen for years Into a river of tears?

This one cracks me up. First time I thought the song was about some dark morbid shizz. Turns out the guy just had a crazy axx goth girlfriend he needed to dump.
Can't go out cause her roots are showing? Her perfume smells like burning leaves? That's pure poetry.

She's in love with herself She likes the dark On her milk white neck The Devil's mark It's all Hallows Eve The moon is full Will she trick or treat I bet she will She's got date at midnight With Nosferatu Oh baby, Lilly Munster Ain't got nothing on you Well when I called her evil She just laughed And cast that spell on me Boo bit ch Craft Yeah you want to go out 'cause it's raining and blowing You can't go out 'cause your roots are showing Dye em black Black no. 1 Little wolf skin boots And clove cigarettes An ero tic funeral For witch she's dressed Her perfume smells like Burning leaves Everyday is Halloween Loving you was like loving the dead

is kinda like 'which grain of sand on the beach is the sandiest' but one I heard yesterday in the car that never fails to amaze me in terms of its construction is Don McLean's American Pie. Its an epic poem set to music and far deeper than merely just the nostalgia for his musical heroes. Maybe a bit overplayed across the airwaves throughout its history, but still an undisputable example of songwriting excellence.

See him wasted on the sidewalk, in his jacket and his jeans Wearin' yesterday's misfortunes like a smile Once he had a future, full of money love and dreams Which he spent like they was goin' out o' style
And he keeps right on a'changin', for the better or the worse Searchin' for a shrine he's never found Never knowin' if believin', is a blessin' or a curse Or if the goin' up was worth, the comin' down
He's a poet, an' he's a picker, he's a prophet, an' he's a pusher He's a pilgrim and a preacher, and a problem when he's stoned He's a walkin' contradiction, partly truth and partly fiction Takin' ev'ry wrong direction on his lonely way back home
He has tasted good and evil, in your bedrooms and your bars And he's traded in tomorrow for today Runnin' from his devils Lord, and reachin' for the stars And losin' all he loved, along the way
But if this world keeps right on turnin', for the better or the worse And all he ever gets is older and around From the rockin' of the cradle, to the rollin' of the hearse The goin' up was worth, the comin' down
He's a poet, an' he's a picker, he's a prophet, an' he's a pusher He's a pilgrim and a preacher, and a problem when he's stoned He's a walkin' contradiction, partly truth and partly fiction Takin' ev'ry wrong direction on his lonely way back home
There's a lot of wrong directions, on that lonely way back home
