Committments, schemittments.

If you want to see just how little committments mean, and thus how tough recruiting is, just listen to this.

He goes name after name after name of people committed to one school and probably going to sign with another school.

Does Recruiting Rankings Mean Anything Anymore?

Does Recruiting Rankings Mean Anything Anymore? BretFSU - that was the name of the thread I was just typing out.

But, yours does the trick.

Why so many people are still so uptight about it; is beyond me in today's CFB. It's not like the kid is obligated to "ACTUALLY STAY" at that school.

I think it does still mean something, but it's not "the indicator" it used to be.

Now that players can move about; it's going to be all about roster management and some development. But, don't develop a kid without playing with them or they may move on away from you.

If you are a school that benefits from another school's developmental program - good for you!

This is why I can understand people's frustration with Dabo's seeming reluctance to use the portal. I don't like some of the stuff people feel is needed to express themselves; but "I understand"!

For now, Clemson is holding on to its developmental guys, or at least the bulk of them. If it gets worse than it did this go around; you will see more aggressive portal usage.

I think the new "gauge" to look at what teams have the potential to be NC contenders will be your "recruiting plus portal composite"!

Taking an FCS player like FSU did who was under-recruited instantly builds your roster to another level.
Kalil Mack was a 2-star recruit; ended up at Buffalo. Had the portal been around; no doubt he ends up at Ohio State, Alabama or Florida, or FSU. It's bad for those teams that "took a chance on a kid and built them up"! But, it's beneficial for FBS programs that can give them what they desire in terms of NIL opportunities and exposure. It's not fair, but that's the game now!

FBS kids leaving one school for another who don't understand the dynamics of the portal and the fact - there will still be competing at the next school is another story. They likely were highly rated coming out; but if they had plateaued and had no further growth potential as a football/basketball player - "oh well"! Let them leave - I still think there should be some type of loyalty or payback to the school for providing the platform. IDK - but it means zero-zilch to be a committed player!

I'm not getting to overly excited about some of these teams gaining all that quality depth. Because more than likely; they all won't be there after a year or so.

Great points.

There are so many moving parts now, no one knows where they will finally lead us.

Example: aTm bought the best recruiting class in the history of the NCAA. 12 months later, 25 guys are in the portal. So, how's that working out for you, Jimbo?

This year Miami is doing the same thing. There is some billionaire down there who is paying the players probably even more than aTm paid out last year. They will end up in the top 3 in the nation on signing day.

Questions that only time can answer.
1. You pay a HS kid 1.5 million bucks to come in and play OT. What are you going to pay the guys whose started the last 38 games at OT?
2. You pay HS kids a total of 15 million bucks to sign with you this year. What are you going to pay them next year?
3. If you spend 15 million dollars on the guys you signed last year, where are you gonna get the 15 million bucks to sign the kids this year? Are billionaires gonna for okver 15 to 20 million bucks every year if have the kids they paid as freshmen leave the school in a year or two?

4. How will paying players affect the culture in the locker room. Apparently, at least for now, Mike Norvell has got a system that gets kids NIL money (he's got several guys who are eligible tor the NFL draft, but they have signed contracts with a collective and are coming back next year) and still keeping a good culture. How long is this sustainable?

5. Getting guys through the portal can work for short term fixes, but can you rely on it year after year after year? (It may be like recruiting a bunch of JUCO kids. Once you start that, how do you stop. You've got to recruit a JUCO kid to step in and replace them.)

Somehow capitalism and politicians will figure out how to calm the portal/NIL fiasco we have today. (It may be better; it may be worse. But, it will be different.) But, until then, it looks more like those mining towns during the 1849 gold rush, or the land rush that people cheated on to get a good piece of land "Sooner" than the rules allowed. (One state is named for those people.)

It is a Cat 5 sh*tstorm and temper your faith in politicians to actually fix anything.

As for capitalism, maybe the invisible hand of the market settles this down, but passionate billionaire fan make for an irrational market.

Note, I didn't say "fix" it.

Dec 20, 2022, 6:50 AM

I carefully avoided that word.

1. Politicians seldom fix things. They just do something and it always leads to unintended consequences, most of the time making things worse but always making things different.

2. Capitalism does the same thing. And, you are right about "greed." When immoral people are involved in capitalism, you get immoral actions which lead to more problems.

So, that puts you right back to square one. Politicians and capitalism have to figure out ways to "solve" the new problems they just created.

everything is going to be fluid and move faster, most likely need more personnel to manage a college football program

Bret, there is a radio show here in SC called

Dec 20, 2022, 6:42 AM

Sports Talk. Last night, the report was that a certain recruit's commitment to the school he had announced a commitment to was "about a 6 or 7."

The word "commitment" doesn't mean anything.

Commitments don't waver.

I was just thinking they should put an asterisk next to committed on their social media post when transferring to their 3rd school.
