Great News this morning!

Sep 5, 2021, 9:13 AM

Even after lasts night game, I was able to wake up this morning, the sun is out, the grass is below my feet, and I get to enjoy a cup of coffee in peace as my wife and son sleep in. What a blessed day it is indeed.

Now that I have had a chance to digest what happened last night here are my simple thoughts:

1) I think it may be an age or maturity thing, but I sure am glad that I have finally gotten to the point in my life where Clemson losing doesn’t cause the Neanderthal in me to come out. No flying remotes, no cursing the tv, and no coming on TNET after an emotional game and spouting off crazy thoughts of firing everyone, blaming the NIL, and fighting with others Tiger fans.

2) I am not a football coach, never have been, never will be; so I will leave it to the guy Clemson pays millions to to figure out how to correct what went wrong.

3) Our OL has been a constant problem over the… well a lonnnggg time! We have been extremely lucky to have mobile QBs recently that helped hide this weakness, but that is not the case this year. I am not sure if it is a talent/evaluation issue, strength and conditioning, or coaching. However, it is obvious that something needs to change and fast or we will continue to be manhandled by the Alabama’s, OSUs, and UGAs of the world.

4) Our QB play left a lot to be desired. After watching BC and ND games last year, I was expecting more than I saw. Am I ready to throw DJ to the wolves? Heck no, it was his 1st game as the leader of the team. Sure he at times looked lost ( game moving to fast for him), hesitant, and like the had concrete holding him in the pocket. I believe the game will slow down for him the more snaps he gets. To combat his hesitancy, he will need to trust the process and his ability more. However, I am not sure how you teach him to move out of the pocket more and become more mobile. Which if the OL performance continues, he will have to do or he will find himself on the ground a lot this year.

5) Play calling was God awful! To have all summer to get ready for this game and that was the best plan you can come up with is kind of scary. I am sure the coaches knew just as the fans, announcers, and every college football fan knew that UGA has one of if not the best DL in college. Also it seemed like we did not try to make adjustments until the 4th. As soon as we realized that UGA would try and pressure us all night, we should have adjusted to add in some true QB runs and more, lots more, of the short quick passes over the middle for 5-6 yards. That could have helped keep UGA LBs in check and helped with running game.

6) While the defense played outstanding holding UGA to 3 points on offense, I am not ready to crown them as elite. Don’t get me wrong they are very good and exciting to watch. But the fact is UGA is not a powerhouse offense. Personally I would take our QB, WRs, and RBs over theirs ( gimme their OL and that freshman TE). So I will temper my excitement on them until a see more body of work.

7) In the end the deciding factor in the game was a pick 6. If not for that, we have no idea how the game would have ended, but it was 3-3 without it! To play so incomplete and still lose a top 5 matchup by 1 play is fairly impressive.

8) At this point, NO we are not a playoff team. However the year is long and if we can improve every week, maybe we will be ready come December.

9) I love my Tigers no matter what and am proud to call them my team.

I hope you all have a safe and enjoyable rest of your Labor Day weekend.

At least DJ had really spiffy clothes and hat. That’s important.

Agree on all accounts. But actually , it would have been 6-3, Bc we would have kicked a field goal then and again in the 3rd. The pick 6 was the determining factor. Without that we would have won ( probably ) by the amount Vegas said we should have and we would all be talking about the epic battle of defenses we just watched !

Glad your coffee was great… what was in it? Sorry ,typical lets keep making excuses because all is right with my world…Been a Clemson fan for all my 71 years ,my dad played for Clemson and bled Orange until he died…But our offense from top to bottom has been beaten sometimes thoroughly from 5 top tier teams… don’t you think it’s time to fix the problem?

Thanks for #1, brother. I hit a wall in the 80s after Butler kicked a winning field goal. That was a turning point, indeed.

I, too, trust our staff to fix things. Perhaps we expected too much from DJ in just his 3rd start.

Offensive coordination needs to improve in a big way.

Hats off to Georgia.

Enjoyed reading your post.

Item#4 - I agree that DJ got trapped in the pocket too many times. One of the things I have seen our coaches do in the past is to roll the pocket by design and get the quarterback out on the edge. I would have loved to seen that last night. It may have helped DJ see the field better and even opened things up for him to scramble if he didn’t see anything downfield.

Georgia had all summer to game plan against DJ. We did was well. Both D's dominated. They were without a few starters as we were. I always said if we dont get blown out and lose we will get in just have to win the rest. Isnt that most every year?

Ha ha. I've been too hung over today to give the game much thought. Was very thankful for the amazing grits I had for breakfast though.

Our D played lights out. DJ didn't look too confident but it's something he can fix. Our D played lights out.

Losing sucks. That's two in a row now. This will be a fun team to watch play this season.

Go Tigers!

Great post but I disagree on #6

Sep 5, 2021, 7:59 PM

Our defense missed 3 starters and still played lights out. It is most definitely an elite unit.

The D-line could end up being our best ever. (On a negative note, Justin Mascoll gave up a huge run because he didn't seal the edge when subbing in for Murphy).

The LBs were stellar.

The DBs missed 2 starters and played very well. Just wait till Nolan and Fred are back on the field.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Highly doubtful

Sep 6, 2021, 8:52 AM

While I think this DL is very good, there is very little chance (like .00001) this line will compare with the Power Rangers. Four elite-NFL caliber DLmen is not what we have this year. Don’t get me wrong, I love this current group but there really is no comparison at this stage.
LB were not great, maybe slightly above average. Spector got pushed around most of the night. Skalski played solid as always but Simpson wasn’t a factor either.
Backend was much better than anticipated so I think you’re spot on although I’m not sure Turner will be an upgrade. I like his presence but Mokumba (sp?) was really impressive. Good to have both given our injury issues the past few years.
I think this is a high quality defense and don’t think they will give up a lot of points, assuming Davis and Breese will stay healthy. They will need to as our offense will struggle against decent to better competition.

Re: Highly doubtful

Sep 6, 2021, 9:13 AM

Disagree. Bresee, Murphy, Davis, Thomas are on par with the power rangers. I believe both Capehart and Williams will both play in the NFL. We’ll see…
