Looked at UGA's depth chart...

Jul 19, 2013, 9:48 AM

They seem to have a talent edge at OL, DL, LB, and RB. They have a lot of guys at these position that we wanted.

We already knew about Gurshall, but I was surprised about their OL, which is both talented and experienced. That could be a problem, especially if we get an official crew that lets them get away with holding all night. We've seen that happen to us far too many times where our D-linmen get grabbed, facemasked, choked, and tackled, and the official swallows the whistle.

I am less worried about the DL and LB talent. They are good, but young. I am also not convinced Todd Grantham is a good DC. His scheme causes them confusion, much like Kevin Steele's.

I agree with you about Grantham. I think his schemes are geared more towards pro football rather than college. He will probally be gone after this year.

I am not one to jump on the "jump on the coach train", but I agree with you on this one. Last year was an under performing exhibit of epic proportions ... If this year follows last year's example he will simply take an NFL job and be gone.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

A lot of UGA fans say the Grantham hire was forced

Jul 19, 2013, 10:53 AM

on Richt by Michael Adams.

I think Grantham know his Xs and Os, but his scheme, like Kevin Steele who we had before, makes LBs read and react.

That's fine for the NFL, but a lot of college LBs just aren't good at that.

Re: Looked at UGA's depth chart...

Jul 19, 2013, 10:18 AM

As strong as we are in some positions (especially on the offensive side of the ball) we are riddled with inexperience in others. (Particular in the defensive secondary.) Those match ups favor CU ...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It certainly looks like a shootout.

With both offenses having the upper hand.

Jul 19, 2013, 10:28 AM [ in reply to It certainly looks like a shootout. ]

Should be epic for opening weekend where traditionally the defenses rule.

- Tajh will take advantage of our youth on D by sucking them in to cover his run, only to pull up at the last second and throwing over their head.

- Georgia will do the same by establishing a running game.

Not a better, but even if I was I would not touch this one with a ten foot pole.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How did you look at it.

Jul 19, 2013, 10:30 AM

Comparing OLs to OLs or OL to DLs. How good their OL is compared to our OL is meaningless. They don't play against each other. Their is a lot of talent on both sides, but their OL is only going against our DL, which is possibly very good (or maybe not, LSU may have been an anomaly). Can we stop the run, yes if we put enough guys in the box.

It could be a very close interesting game or if we get a few early stops and scores, forcing them to pass it may turn into a blow out.

Re: Looked at UGA's depth chart...

Jul 19, 2013, 10:40 AM

They were good on offense last year but this year could be ridiculous. Yes there are issues on the D but look at this.

They return 9 starters on offense

1 - 2nd team Preseason all SEC QB
2 - 1st Team Preseasons all SEC RB
3 - 2nd Team Preseason all SEC RB
4 - multiple 2nd and 3rd Team Preseason all SEC OL
5 - 2nd team preseason all SEC WR
6 - 2nd team preseason all SEC TE

Pretty tough offense going against an unproven D

Take into acct USC had only 2 players OL AJ Cann and TE Rory Anderson on the whole list

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

LOL you're using PRESEASON honors to defend them?

Jul 19, 2013, 10:46 AM

coot logic.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think you may a bit liberal with 'unproven'

Jul 19, 2013, 10:53 AM [ in reply to Re: Looked at UGA's depth chart... ]

We lost 1 DL, 2 LB, and though we did lose 3 DBs, we're gaining back guys from injury last year, not freshmen (though Alexander should make a similar impact to Blanks)

I mean...when is a defense really unproven? When you lose less than 4?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Clemson

LSU just put 8 Ds into the NFL in the first 5 rounds. GA"s D

Jul 19, 2013, 10:54 AM [ in reply to Re: Looked at UGA's depth chart... ]

lost 8 starters. I'm not thinking that GA's O will be as predictable as LSU's was, but our D will hold GA's O better than GA's D will hold our O. It's about depth on both sides of the ball. Clemson by 10+.

Don't forget about kick returns and coverage. WE must get

Jul 19, 2013, 11:28 AM

much better there. LSU was way better covering and returning kicks, and it's a big reason why we had to go 3 for 1 on yardage to beat them by 1 pt.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

TOTALLY agree. Good point that I've brought up before, also.

Jul 19, 2013, 11:58 AM

I do think that was a derivative of a lack of depth at DBs and somewhat at LB. Hopefully they have more to work with this season but it definitely needs attention. Every game we've lost over the last 2 years could to a big degree be attributed to the return game giving up too much field position.

Re: Looked at UGA's depth chart...

Jul 19, 2013, 10:55 AM

Well young recent tiger grad, that is all any of us have to go on, isn't it? We discuss Tahj, Sammy, etc based on proven results, why can't UGA be discussed based on proven results and 9 returning starters. nothing should be overlooked in those facts.

You say coot logic but I actually graduated from both schools and am one of few 3rd party posters who stick in the middle pulling for both schools and try to understand the silliness of both groups.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They absolutely can. so use proven results in your argument.

Jul 19, 2013, 11:10 AM [ in reply to Re: Looked at UGA's depth chart... ]

lines. That's something Clemson hasn't had in years... years. That's changed and will only get better. There have been years where the starting DLs would be very good, but we were lacking at LBs. Last year was more about depth at DBs. Even tho the DB situation is probably the biggest question mark entering this season, I think it gets rectified in fall camp with the 2 CBs returning from injury and some of the new talent from the RSs and 8 signees. Of the projected 2-deep on D, we only lose 2 LBs and 1 DB for next year's squad. That's developing depth and it took Venables half a season to even begin to sort things out (no knock here). The extra practice after the season and prior to the LSU game showed. Clenson by 10+.

Memphis, CU's pace of O will be a big factor on the game. You run that style of O as good or better than anyone ... with that, it wears down the D ... especially a younger D. BUT, don't count on Georgia's O giving you the ball back as quickly as LSU did on a consistent basis. If we do, the game will be over quickly, if not the time of possession will be much more even (still will give the edge to CU) and cramps will not be as much as a factor.

You're right about conditioning being a factor, but our s&c program is built entirely around h.i.i.t training which is primarily used for endurance and cardio. I feel good about our guys chances of being able to go all four quarters.

Slight advantage CU ... ever so slight. (Don't want to talk about secondary ... lol) We have some talent with playing time that did not start last year that will make a big impact for us on the OL and LB positions.
