Gotta start more football talk

Apr 19, 2014, 10:10 PM

How do you think the Georgia game goes? I expect UGa to bring pressure and try to press on our receivers to try to get picks off of rushed throws. I think they will try to run more than they did last year, and I expect our front 7 to handle that. I think we score on defense, and I think Pinion puts us in good field position all night. Still not sure ab Cole, somebody reassure me

From what I've seen, Stoudt reacts very well to pressure. He finds his checkdowns and doesnt lock onto his first read. But UGA will have to blitz imo giving him time is the worst thing a defense could do.

I think UGa defense is gonna play us exactly the way Pruitt did when FSU came in last year. Hopefully, his DBs at UGa aren't as good as the ones at FSU. I think we can handle pressure well, I hope Jay Guillermo finds a spot on the line. From left to right Battle, Davis, Norton, Guillermo, ? Dang who plays RT? Not really sure, we lost alot on the line, and suspensions hurt

The OL will have to step up big but I believe these WRs can beat UGAs press but I agree it's all for nothing if we can't keep Cole upright. Hopefully if we have issues with pressure, we can start moving the pocket and getting the ball out quicker.

TE should help alot with blocking too. JJ McCullough should have an impact, I've liked him for a few years I'm waiting for him to step up. Mac Lain is athletic enough to handle defensive ends and pick up guys on the edge, but I'm not sure that he's big enough to hold up on the line all year. Shaq Anthony will help alot wish those dumb aces wouldn't have got suspended

TEs will be a matchup problem especially Leggett if he plays to potential. The RBs will have to step up blocking too.

I was hoping they could get JJ the ball throwing it to him. I feel like he's a mismatch for lots of linebackers, and too big for safeties. CJ Davidson is a burner too, he gets past everybody's reach he's gone

Re: Gotta start more football talk

Apr 20, 2014, 10:54 PM

Our TEs will need to be dynamic across the board as far as matchups until this young WR corps comes into it's own. Could they come out of the gate ready? I sure hope so, but if not, TEs will need to step up

Re: Gotta start more football talk

Apr 19, 2014, 11:33 PM

At first I think they're going to try to stack the box and make Cole beat them with his arm. I think he can do it, but I'm not sure that we have the reliable WR we need to make that happen. We'll have Peake back which will be huge. He seemed to be a very dependable receiver. Then of course there's Humph, but he's never really been a breakaway kind of WR.

Ground game and pass-pro is going to be huge and that's going to come down to the OLine doing their job.

I don't know what UGAy is going to try to do offensively. I'm assuming that they're going to run Gurley early and often. I think our D can handle it though as we've proven to be able to keep good RBs below their season YPC avg.

Re: Gotta start more football talk

We have to get off the field on 3rd down against Gurley and co. especially third and short.

actually be a tad tougher to defend since the dawg defense will have to try and lock down ALL of our receivers (and backs and t.e.'s), with them not knowing who our actual #1 will be (at least this is the scenario i hope plays out.)

There are a lot of ifs and shoulds in this thread. No offense but no one has mentionedthe biggest factor of this game, being at UGA. The crowd will be huge and there is so much inexperience and so many question marks on the field for Clemson's offense.

I am sorry but Stoudt is not as good as Boyd. It is amazing to see how this board has thrown him under the bus since his departure. Boyd crumbled some under pressure but he was a great college QB. I wil admit that Clemson has depth and talent and the defense is much improved (still a lot of busted plays in the secondary) but going in to uga on opening wknd....that is asking a lot of a first year starting qb, new rb, inexperienced wr, replacement olinemen.

tough place to play, i'll give you that, but defense travels. our cornerbacks will be more talented then they were last year, but inexperienced, i will admit - we do, however, return both our safeties, so i expect to see less blown assignments in this area, especially from the ballhawking jayron kearse .

The only mistake Boyd made was letting the game get into his head and in his defense that is very difficult to overcome, but his numbers speak for themselves. Playing on the road will be difficult with an young team, but it can be done. One thing that will help is for the offense to settle down, go up tempo, start stringing together first downs, and to get on the board first.

Tough place to play, but honestly there are not many guys on the field that night who haven't experienced that in some way. I'm nervous ab 3 things: 1. Right tackle 2. QB 3. RB. If we could borrow one of Uga's 5 stars that Richt will ruin, we'd much appreciate it

I think RT will just be touch and go for a
while but I see an established starter by fall camp. Stoudt is very steady, not flashy he will move the chains. Gallman shows lots of upside but I do want to see what DJ Howard can do before it's all said and done

If Shaq Anthony weren't suspended I would feel much better. Same with David Beasley. If DJ Howard can get past the line of scrimmage I think he's ok, but usually he puts his head down and pounds it right into our o-lines back

Yeah we needed them to step up for us and in time I believe they will but not in Athens anyway. I'd much rather not have them for a few games then to have them arrested. That's another thing I like about Dabo he doesn't play around when it comes to discipline. On DJ, it seemed he ran with more heart in the spring game he just flat out wanted it. If he can fix the mental errors, he could be a surprise this year.

There's enough backs to bring something different to the table. All we have to do is demand ball security.

How many quarterbacks can dance on the head of a pin?

Apr 20, 2014, 10:40 AM

Sorry ... still in religion mode.

I gotta believe the Dawgs will stack the line forcing Cole to throw. We know he can do that, but on the road, 1st game as a starter, uncertain of the QB-WR chemistry ... it makes sense that Georgia would plan this way.

Clemson's response? If we can manage yardage on the ground, we'll do it. Georgia's D will still be getting worn down late by our pace and the temperature between the hedges.

If not, and I'm assuming the Dawgs' untested secondary will be playing cover zone since they don't know where the ball will be going, we'll look for the soft spots, taking what we can get. It's not dynamic, but it's effective.

And remember: the Dawgs are in a similar situation with a new QB. Their O-Line has some seasoning, but our D Line is far more stout that their's. And while young, our secondary will be surprising.

Both teams will find frustration on offense. Which can make the most of opportunities the defense provides will win this one.

Good game evaluation. I can agree with that being the game final outcome.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This is what I think about Cole.

Apr 20, 2014, 10:42 AM

I would have snatched Boyd's ### a couple of times last year were it not for knowing he'd blow a gasket over it. I'm not talking about Tajh getting mad I'm talking about him having a nervous breakdown.

I know it's not fair to compare the two but the only thing TB had on Cole last year was his strength to break tackles and fight for extra yards.

Cole checks down like a pro, that's something Boyd has yet to learn. Cole reads a defense as well as TB and is better decision maker. We're in good hands with Cole.

All that being said he won't last three games before DW takes the helm as Clemson's future.

Our ground game will need to be there all night and we can't abandon it like we have in years past. Imo Gallman will step up big for us this year if we stick with our running game. Don't get me wrong, Tajh is one of my favorite players, but sometimes you just had to scratch your head at some of his decisions, but like I said his numbers speak for themselves.

Apr 20, 2014, 11:08 PM [ in reply to This is what I think about Cole. ]

^^^^ I've noticed that for 3 years. The coaches disagree and went with that cannon for an arm in Boyd. Cole is an excellent QB IMO and makes those reads as smoothly as any QB I've seen at CLEMSON. Not sure why the coaches don't see that. It's so dang obvious. I just don't think Cole should try to make those laser passes to the edge of the field which will probably result in INT's. Let's hope the coaches at least know that.

ah heck - get those panties out of a wad. We're just talking fb here. lol

This season will all come down to QB play.

Apr 20, 2014, 12:58 PM

I think Cole will be fine and we can win 9-11 games.
If we struggle with O then it could also look a lot like the 2010 season. The Tigers will have to move the chains and not leave the D out to dry.

Re: This season will all come down to QB play.

Apr 20, 2014, 1:14 PM

Cole will be great with decent protection. he finds the checkdowns and underneath routes more often than not and will throw it away or run if nothing's there he doesnt seem to force things. That will be vital with a young team seeing a senior leader step up like he seems to be able to

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: This season will all come down to QB play.

Apr 20, 2014, 11:41 PM

Cole height and accuracy will be a plus and a major pain for overly aggressive and blitzing defenses. He will have a advantage in seeing the field better when checking down or reading defenses during pass plays.

Cole Stoudt is better than Boyd and Kelly in my opinion. He is more poised in the pocket, and can be a dual threat if needed. We are fine.

Apr 21, 2014, 9:37 AM

Cole will have such a great game plan in place for him that he'll throw at a percentage of no less than 75% completion rate & run for nearly 100 yards on less than 15 attempts.

More importantly, the Clemson linebackers will make divots with Gurley's body & have a new tombstone in place by the time the team gets back to Clemson.

Still working on my score prediction, don't want to predict anything too early. Lots of time for both teams to have kids suspended. I think it's gonna be low scoring, but I like that prediction Louie. Over under 120 yards for Gurley?
