GOR

Has anyone actually seen the GOR document? I've read 100's of reports on the GOR but found nothing showing the entire agreement. Maybe I don't Google so well.
I'm no lawyer and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn recently, but is there has to be a way to invalidate the agreement. Maybe the huge disparity in payout is reason to show the league isn't financially viable in the current market? Spitballing

I've seen language snippets here and there, but as I understand it (and I'm no lawyer, so take this as you will), there are thought to be two factors to push on.
The first is that there is a conference viability clause, which effectively states that if 8 or more teams leave, the whole contract is void.
The second is that the GOR is only for media rights. So could we work out a deal where we don't get any media rights, but a big "annual dividend for being nice guys"? Who knows. I believe this is commonly thought to be too on-the-nose, and any court would see through it.
Anyway, that's what I've heard, for what it's worth. If it was easy to get around, someone would have by now.

I just read an article stating there is a rumored buy out of 50 million to leave the ACC. May be just that, a rumor, but I'm sure if a team wanted out they could get out without having to deal with the entire length of the GOR.

According to another site, if the ACC adds teams the current GOR becomes invalid and a new one has to be produced. If true, that could be the opportunity Clemson needs.

I think there is a avenue for Clemson to exit the ACC with no penalty and its related to the 1980s NCAA/ACC probation.

I am no lawyer either, but suggest we attempt to invalidate it based on incompetent leadership under Swofford.

Better question, how did all member schools get conned into

this disaster of a deal? Oh like no one thought there would be a college football landscape shake up in the next 15-20 years? Absolutely inconceivable how anyone, let alone EVERYONE would go along with this fiasco.

I’m not sure Maryland ever paid up when they left. If I remember correctly they were operating athletics in the red. This has been a good while back though.

Didn’t they get that fee reduced greatly after leaving ? If not where did that money go ??

Did all the schools split that money or did it go towards Swoffords retirement

$52M is not that much money in the grand scheme of things. The new video board over the hill probably cost about the same. Just saying if we can spring for a big fancy TV, we can do the same to leave for greener pastures.

GOR is "Grant of Rights". It is different than the exit fee.
There are 2 big financial impacts to leaving:
$52M exit fee. We'd recoup this very quickly with increased revenue in another conference, BUT...
Grant of Rights for duration of the ACC TV contract which runs through 2036. We'd be giving up tens of millions of dollars and would hold no control of our TV contract unless we can find a legal loophole.

No - the GOR was put in place after Maryland left.

If we join the SEC---wouldn't those revenues from SEC distributions be 3fold any lost ACC GOR?

No. By granting the ACC the rights to our TV revenue, any money we make off of a TV deal would be paid to the ACC, not to Clemson.
