I saw a plant as big as a tree in someone’s yard that I have never seen before. It has a large clump of stuff at ground level that resembles big cabbage leaves and has a stalk the size of a telephone pole with something like a bloom at the top- probably 20 feet off the ground-what is that thing?

What is it?? I think a better question might be what were you smoking when you saw it?!? Kidding. Are you in the tropics somewhere?

Yucca? They can be as you described. Can be quite phallic.

Agave also sends a towering pole-sized central shoot.

agaves, and fish. If it wasn’t for Tnet I wouldn’t have done a deep-dive google search for a cabbage looking plant with big flower stalk, only to find out that agave is in the asparagus family. Who’d a thunk it ?

Yeah, that is a century plant. Yucca grows close to the ground with no stalks.
