Goodwin has to show improvement in Year 2

I think we all know Dabo has no desire to make changes with either coordinator after a 1 year sample, but with the talent returning and the year under his belt, I would hope Goodwin can improve on last year’s numbers. I know BV set a high bar but the “best is standard.” The standard is a Top 10 defense. I am all for giving guys a chance and by no means do I think our D was the issue that cost us games, but the D definitely didn’t look the same either for much of the year. Goodwin hopefully has learned some and will progress.

He had the benefit of a number of standouts returning last year that we thought would make a dominating D and he's getting it again this year. D needs to be top 15 at least.

Top 10 has been the standard, so why should he be held to less than the standard. Neither Coordinator deserved not even a practice year to see what they could do, and they certainly don't deserve another year with a kid's future that has such a short time in college to show scouts they are ready to play ball in the NFL!!!!

Venables really.
There were two games where our DB's played poorly: Wake and USuC. They also faded in the 4th against UT.
Venables believes more in DBs playing man and Goodwin ran a bit more zone. That was the main difference that I saw. We may have blitzed the LBs a bit more with Venables but the defense looked similar, IMO. I think the main difference comes down to personell.

I agree! If I had a negative it would be Eason. DL did not live up to the pre season hype imo.

I believe that BV put a higher demand on his players in practice every day than what Goodwin done, and I think that it showed in the fire the guys had while playing the game when it counted the most, and that comes from every day on the practice field. Playing in the game on gameday is supposed to be easier than what practice is!!!!

Notre Dame, La Tech, Furman, Wake, FSU, South Carolina, and Tennessee the defense played poor in all those games. The only game that impressed me was North Carolina. Given the talent coming in this season I expected more.
And OMG you can't be serious. Last year's D ran circles around this year's. Held Georgia to 3 points, South Carolina to 0, Wake to 24, and just looked more dominant.

the 2022 Defense had so many obstacles this season

the injuries the personnel changes the young DBs
2023 Clemson Defense will be top 5 in the nation. Too much experience and raw talent. 2022 was a learning year. 2023 We'll see Nick Eason's dline recruits and Goodwin's LB recruits take off.
+++++ CK2 will be running 100 plays / game on offense.
RUN IT BACK

Agree. No excuses for lack of skill or experience next season. Coach these boys up and let’s climb that mountain!

He is better than Streeter but he needs improvement also.

That statement is definitely the golden holy grail for the Clemson defense. It should be posted on his walls.
As for Streeter....I like the guy and all...but he needs to be reminded of some sort of unholy consequence will be upon him if he doesn't improve.

Offense needs an identity. Heck with being balanced if running the ball is what you are good at. He was hell bent on hitting 50/50 and we just did not have the personnel to make that a reality.

We gave up a bunch of TDS last year due to inexperience at the CB position and injury related depth issues at Safety.
Mukuba’s torchings reflected our desperation to put experienced CBs on the fiel$; unfortunately the Mukuba experiment proved that a fine safety does not necessarily translate into a capable CB.
Can’t blame the DB problems on Goodwin or any of the coaches.
Quite candidly, our CB unit improved markedly as the season progressed, with Nate Wiggins finishing the year at a nearly elite level of play.

Kinda miss all the chaos before the snap. LB's moving all over the place, DL shifting, Safety's rolling down. You could tell it freaks the other teams QB out. Why'd we go away fr that?

Not at the level Clemson is now. Both promotions were foolish.
