Report: Deshaun Watson has officially requested a trade from Texans

Nothing seems salvageable between Deshaun Watson and the Houston Texans. According to ESPN's Adam Shefter on Thursday, Watson has already asked for a trade offi Read Update »

The Texans have surpassed Dan Snyder in stupidity. They hired a 65 year old guy with no head coaching experience and, as best I can tell, no experience as a coordinator.

Please don't confuse the media circus trying to keep this frontline news with Deshaun's actions.

He has taken one stance, has been quiet about it publicly, and he is simply sitting back and waiting for the Texans to take action.

I don't think the Texans started to move on this because they expected to hire a head coach and mend fences.

This latest report is just letting the Texans know that Deshaun isn't changing his mind and he is going to stick to his plan to leave.

Doesn’t really matter, because he doesn’t have much leverage, and the Texans don’t have to trade him and won’t unless they get a good deal. I love Deshaun, but the fact of the matter is, he signed the big deal before last season, well after Nuk was traded. He knew what he was getting in to when he made that commitment. He’s still got 3 years left on the deal, and if the Texans want to be petty about it, they can let him sit out 3 years and waste 3 years of his prime.

I can understand he’s upset that he wasn’t in the loop on the hires of GM and HC, but that’s really not his place or something he’s entitled to. He made requests, which it seems they listened to as they retained Tom Kelly as OC, something Deshaun had advocated for.

In the end, I don’t think he goes anywhere. In order for him to be traded, the team he’s going to is going to have to give up a kings ransom, and if said team does that, what shape is that team left in after acquiring Deshaun. On top of that, is the team that can offer that going to be one Deshaun will waive his no trade clause for? A lot of things have to come together, and I don’t know if they will.

In actuality, he has all the leverage. The “new NFL” allows players to be more interactive in who they work for. If they decide to be petty, any elite NFL player can refuse to go there in free agency and any elite player coming out of college can pull an Eli Manning. If they don’t handle this right, this can go from terrible to unbearable

You might want to look at that again, he has practically no leverage in this situation. Every day he misses is $50K, every game he misses is $620K, and if they refuse to trade him to where he choses to retire, he owes them $21.6M.

No team is seriously worried about the turning off elite players, because as long as there's millions of dollars, a salary cap, and thousands of guys who'd kill their whole family to take a roster spot, there will always be guys wanting to play. The browns would've folded a long time ago if that was the case. If this was the last year of his deal, he'd probably be traded, but with 3 left, unless the other team bankrupts themselves to get him, he's probably not going anywhere.

I saw it clearly, He knows what he has to do. His pockets would be hurt, but his salary still goes against the cap, which would cripple the team while not having their franchise quarterback. A no trade clause gives the player the lion’s share of the leverage. They better field offers from the teams on his short list and take the best one. I also don’t see why you don’t think they’d be concerned by not turning off athletes if they handle this wrong, like these guys don’t talk about teaming up and how the atmosphere is within an organization before they go there. They can’t lure multiple elite athletes to their organization while having the biggest contract per year on the payroll and he refusing to suit up. They can’t lure him with money, and they sure can’t lure him with culture and atmosphere.

Not sure everyone has read the contract. It was 156 million extension for 4 years on top of 2 years on his prior contract. 27 million was the signing bonus on the extension. Houston is on the hook for 21.6 million of this bonus that they must pay him if he is traded. Stated plainly, they would flush 21.6 million down the toilet and it would still apply to their cap. To swallow this type of hit would seem a long shot at best not to mention the number of players and picks that a team would have to give up to compensate Houston. A trade might be great for DW but it's a dead loss for Houston.

Also, I understand there are thousands of people that would kill to suit up, but they’d kill because they’d have to. The players in this saga are elite, there are very few, if any, that aren’t in the league that could come in and be difference makers like D. Watt

I don't think any franchise is worried about that as far as players go, because it always comes down to money. If you pay, they'll play. I think both sides just need to put on their big boy pants and work this out. Deshaun needs to get over the notion that he has a say in GM and HC, because if he doesn't he's going to have issues wherever he goes. This team had what, (8) 1 score loses, and is not that far off from the playoffs, so play out the contract, and go from there.

I think the Texans may have kept this quiet to help attract a new coach. Probably lying to the candidates just like they did To DW4. Hard enough to fill that job but would have been even harder if this announcement had already been made public.

Deshaun has given Texas all he had to give during the years he's been there. The Texans rewarded him by serving up lies and never trying to build a team around him. If he wants to ever play for a winning team, he has no choice but to request a trade. As it is, his body continuously takes a beating and his career will likely be cut short by staying in Houston.

Deshaun, please don't come to the Bears. That offensive line will get you killed. They couldn't guard a baby they are so awful. Besides that, the coaches aren't worth a crap.

Forgot to add, Ryan Pace is the dumbest GM in football.

Texas just hired the WR coach and the passing coordinator from Baltimore.

Baltimore ranks dead last in the NFL in passing.

If he goes to the Jets it HAS to be about more than football. I’ve never been a professional athlete, so I’m only speaking from what I’ve heard and read, but athletes in New York get so much bang for their buck as far as endorsement money, that it’s hard to turn down

With all the fines that's said can be placed against DW4, well all that is moot if he shows up, and with his participation in practice, if they start him, he can with ease, everytime he sees a defensive player getting close, throw the ball on the ground, or to the player that's coming after him, and that keeps him from being injured and healthy until the Texans comes around to seeing it his way, that it's a poisonous situation with trying to force him to do anything with the threat of fines!!! And while with the Texans, he should never engage in any QB run plays, NEVER!!!!

Jan 28, 2021, 5:41 PM

Deshaun is the adult in this situation. If Cal McNair didn’t intend to give Deshaun input into the hiring of a new coach and GM, McNair shouldn’t have committed to it. Deshaun had every right to expect McNair to honor his commitments. In that situation, an elite NFL player has leverage that most of us don’t. You really expect him *not* to use it?

Deshaun loves Houston, he’s done a lot of good work in the city, and he had every intention of staying there. This is on McNair and the snake oil salesman who’s leading him around by the nose.

JETS would be great! A couple of really good young receivers, a second year running back who has a lot of potential, and the best young offensive tackle in the NFL, along with some strong young defensive players and a will to win! Even when they knew they could lose and get the number one pick, they played hard, won two of their last three and were extremely excited to do it!!! Lots of picks (even though they’ll lose some to get Deshawn) and lots of money under the cap! And the Spotlight! And great, loyal fans, like myself?? Great situation!!!
