Golden Retriever

Jan 4, 2022, 9:27 PM

We are debating getting a Golden Retriever puppy. We have 3 kids and plenty of space. Any words of wisdom out there whether or not go get one? Thanks!

Great Dogs....shed a lot....if that's not a problem, then 100% yes

We got a Golden as our first dog when my three kids were young. Could not have asked for a better pet. They do shed and they are too friendly to be guard dogs but wonderful pets for a family. She lived 14 years and we miss her. Smart, trainable, and lovable.

We looked for a puppy a few months ago, but could not find any close to SC that weren't already reserved. I hope you get one.

One of the best dogs I ever had.

They are great with kids.

We have a golden doodle that’s 75% poodle 25% golden retriever. Super smart, full of energy and doesn’t shed

That is a great combo!***

Another advantage of a poodle or 75-25 goldendoodle...they are unlikely to get fat on you...you can put a poodle on a self-feeder and they will not overeat! I have never seen a fat poodle!

I have a close to two year old female golden. Sheds tremendously. Sweet girl and smart. Her nose, from what I’ve seen, gets her in more trouble than anything. Crate trained in the house. Definitely won’t need a vacuum for the crum snatchers anymore.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Great with kids, sheds a lot, and are very hyper as puppies.***

It shouldn't be a debate, tbh

Jan 4, 2022, 9:49 PM

If you want a dog, have kids and space, then a Golden is a no brainer. Pull the trigger and quit pussyfooting around. There's a puppy out there with your name on it.

Sorry about the bluntness. Sounded like you needed someone to push you off the diving board. So, get on it!!

Also, if you want to bring in a 2nd dog that is always fun with the kids, will be great with the Golden and will take advantage of your space, consider a Whippet as a buddy for the retriever. Those dogs are chill in the house, don't shed and are basically skinny lap dogs. They are also fun to watch outside when they get the zoomies. The golden will try to keep up, which is always hilarious as well.

Pretty dang hyper is an understatement. They are like a dog on crack!

Got our first golden when kids were 2 and 5. That

Jan 4, 2022, 9:51 PM

Dog is still around kicking it at 15 (soon to be 16). We got our second one around five years ago.

Both have been easy to train. Not tough gun dogs, but instincts are in both of mine. Love em.

Great swimmers and athletes.

Go get two of em tomorrow!

You may want to look at the Golden-Poodle crosses...

Jan 4, 2022, 10:10 PM

the so-called Goldendoodle...way, way less shedding and great dispositions also. Labradoodles are a good option also. T-mail me and I can put you on a good source, from a small breeder. Many folks don't realize that standard poodles are considered the 2nd smartest breed, right behind the border collie. Some folks are turned off from standard poodles because of the silly hairdos that are put on the show dogs...but most owners don't do the extreme haircut on their poodles.

Especially with kids, you may prefer a goldendoodle,

Jan 4, 2022, 10:24 PM

labradoodle or straight poodle. Way less shedding!

As others have said…they are great dogs but she’s a ton! We have one of those robot vacs which does help a lot though.

I have a yellow lab. Winston. A seven year old male. Friendly loyal dog - he's my buddy. Also a shedder.

Golden retriever down the street "Hutch" seems like a fine dog. Good luck!

I'd go for it. They love children and grand parents. Great family dog, plus very smart.

I have had Golden’s all my life and have a female now, GREAT DOG’s. You will not find a dog with a better temperament. The only issue is shedding but all the other factors outweigh that. I have a Goldendoodle too. If the poodle genes outweigh the golden’s you have no shedding. Mine apparently has more Golden in her and she sheds like crazy too but has the Poodle genes in energy, she will retrieve a ball and a stick till she drops.

Get a goldendoodle or labradoodle. Either would be awesome without all the shedding. They are awesome and great with kids.

Easy decision. Yes!

I have an English Golden Cream Retriever. Same as a Golden Retriever, but cream color. Little more of a block head and they stand a little taller in the back and little larger on average when compared to your typical Golden.

If you're in Clemson, the guy to see is only 90 minutes from you at: www.goldensoftroy.com.

Here are 2 pictures of my boy Ben. One of them next to a Golden for comparison.

I have a golden chow mix.

Jan 5, 2022, 12:25 AM

She was a rescue from the pound. Thought she was a lab mix, but testing determined that she is golden and chow. She has shorter hair like a lab, which is probably from a small amount of Dalmatian in her family tree.

She is super sweet and loving, which I attribute to the golden in her. Every golden I have ever known has been wonderful. I say go for it!

As others have said though, be prepared for lots of shedding!

Finally, please get your dog from a quality breeder and not a puppy mill. I’m sure you were thinking the same.

Had 3 over the last 40 years - great pets, loyal, obedient, fun, huge smart. Can't go wrong with a golden.
