Going to Louisville? Beware of road closure I-40 ROCKSLIDE

Sep 15, 2015, 10:18 PM

If your are headed to Louisville from Upstate SC, be aware that today I-40 from Asheville to Knoxville was closed today due to a rockslide.

This is from http://www.ncdot.gov/traffictravel/ and can be monitored at any time.

Right now it says:
I-40 WEST CLOSED NEAR THE TENNESSEE BORDER

All lanes of I-40 West are closed at Exit 20, US-276, due to a rockslide at mile marker 7. The lanes are expected to reopen by 7:00 AM Wednesday morning. Motorists are advised to use caution and to use the following detour:

Take Exit 53B (I-240 West) and follow I-240 West for 5 miles to Exit 4A (I-26 West). Follow I-26 West 74 miles, crossing into Tennessee, to Exit 8A (I-81 South). Follow I-81 South 57 miles to re-access I-40 from mile marker 421.

Take the scenic route.

If you are leaving from the Clemson side of things, kick it up 441. If you are coming more from the Greenville/Spartanburg way, then get on US 70 above Asheville and run that over to Tennessee. Or check back and see if both lanes are open and proceed as normal to I 75. If you aren't in a rig, there is no reason to go all the way up to 81.

Please tell me more about US 70. 4 lanes? Will be driving at night and don't want a tremendous challenge.

I've been wrong two times, but this isn't one of them.

I-40 is reopened after rockslide. Get up the road fans!
