We are in desperate need of that ball distribution and explosive plays that he is speaking of ?

Wouldn’t be surprised if Mafah flourishes in this new offense. Shipley might be the better receiver of the two, but Mafah is more powerful and runs with more power, balance, and control. Hopefully Riley will incorporate the TEs that we have to offset the fact that our wideouts aren’t quite as fast as those in past years. Crisper execution and more strategic route running will be exciting to watch and much needed. Anxious to see how much control Dabo gives Garret Riley. Based on the last several years the more the better it would seem.

With Crisper execution Brandon Streeter would still be the OC/QB coach. Definitely hope to see this offense perform with fewer mistakes and better QB play. First 8 games QB play was worthy last 5 not so much. Coaching takes you so far execution is the key!

Having played the game for 14 years (a long time ago), the old adage
still holds true.. You Never Play better than you Practice!
That said part of the "Lack of Execution" the last two seasons may
be found on the practice field, which is where I believe Coach Riley will start.

Part of that is, "sometimes you don't play as well as you practice".

Jan 16, 2023, 1:03 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Garrett Riley says his offense is about 'ball distribution and explosive plays' ]

There was a key position on the field that quite often didn't play as well as he practiced.

Glad to see more people come over to the idea Mafah's power and stability says something to the tackling a fire hydrant. I have been trying to tell you guys since he was in high school..

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'd love to see Shipley and Mafah as 1 and 1a.

Jan 17, 2023, 1:24 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Garrett Riley says his offense is about 'ball distribution and explosive plays' ]

I'm glad we think we have our QB now but it would suit me just fine if we gave opponents a steady diet of Shipley and Mafah...both on the field at the same time or alternating series, etc. I just think those two can get it done for us and man would that take the pressure off of Cade and open up some space for him.

Right we didn’t just stupid plays the same plays. Like Streeter said at the end of Tennessee game he didn’t know how to fix it.

That’s right. Also, if several RB’s get touches than everyone is happy.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

YES, YES, YES! "Tailor it to what your guys are good at, and

3

what you have." That sounds very simple, but it was what was so frustrating about our offense this year. It seemed at times that we were determined NOT to get the ball into our best playmakers hands.

There is going to be a HUGE buzz around the offense going into spring and fall camps. I hope our guys can quickly do the rote memorization of the new nomenclature, and come out ready to run the new playbook!

My very elementary translation of his offensive philosophy.

Football has been evolving this way for at least 30 years.

Basic principle: Get the ball to an athlete in space.

How to accomplish this:

1. Create more space that the defense has to defend.
a. Be able to attack all over the field, horizontally and vertically, over the middle of the field and sideline to sideline, running between the tackles and running around the edges.
b. Identify the weakness in the defense and attack it.

2. Adjust your offense to the athletes you have and use their strengths. Put them in the position to use their strengths and give them the best opportunity to succeed.

There are lots of different ways to do this. Heck, this was exactly the principles used in the wishbone offense. They accomplished it with a far different offense than the "air raid" or the "run and shoot" or any other pass happy offense. But the basic principle was the same.

Riley talks about having a strong running game. It's much easier to pass the ball when the defense has to put 6 guys in the box to stop the run. If a team can continually rush 4 and drop 7 then it is much more difficult to pass the ball. That's why Shipley and Mafah will be critical to the offense. If you have great TE's who can block and catch, that makes it even more difficult on the defense.

It's a lot more complicated than I will ever understand when it comes to figuring out exactly how to use "my" athletes to attack "your" athletes. But, there are two principles that remain:

1. Recruit better athletes than the other guys.
2. Go out on game day and out athlete them.

I kid, but we need major upgrades/speed at wr. He won’t find a Quentin Johnston in the football facility this week. Good news is his scheme should create more separation opps for our current wr’s.

According to one "Big Dave" this will not help Clemson

1

Jan 16, 2023, 8:45 AM

Until Clemson "evolves and starts using the portal like Bama and UGA". All I could do is laugh at this guy still worrying about what Clemson does. Not gonna lie, I really liked Big Dave at 1st but he became a real issue last year. I mean when DJ tells him he's not allowed at anymore games that should tell us all we need to know. Glad we don't have to deal with that man anymore. Let's get back to the CFP behind Klub, Ship, Mafah, AW & Riley! Go Tigers!!

why is it that everyone thinks the portal is the answer to all problems?

WHO IN THE PORTAL:

1. Is a Clemson need that should take an existing player off scholarship?

2. Want's to come to Clemson.

WHO IS IT????

Do you honestly think players are in the portal to be a backup on a different team?

I compare the portal Pottie to the waiver wire in fantasy football. With very few exceptions, unless you are willing to wait for a hurt player to return, there is very little good help in there.

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Guys like Dacari Collins and EJ Williams are in the portal!

Should we go after those two 4/5-star WRs?

Would they help shore up our WR corps?

Glad to hear it! I can't remember where I heard it, but the

4

Jan 16, 2023, 8:45 AM

point was how important explosive plays (plays over 15 or 20 yards, depending on who you talk to) are. The top teams in the country all are among the leaders in explosive plays. You have to be able to get yardage in big chunks, and we sucked at that the last two years, which essentially gave us no chance to compete at a high level. Hopefully Riley can fix that; at least it's encouraging to hear him acknowledge it's importance.

Riley determines how to put our best guy against their worst guy. Every time. The details, it's all about the details. That's the separation, then the big plays. Then the despair of their defense, then repeat!
Riley also said he doesn't do 1000 things, just do the same things better. I forget the coach that said he didn't care if you knew what he was going to run, he was going to run it again and again successfully. That's so not verbatim, but hope y'all get the point!
So excited for 2023 football!

I just Love Coach Riley's philosophy of Execution! For us older Tigers (I was a walk-on on Charley Pell's 1978 team), this is Danny Ford's philosophy except with Running as the emphasis. Remember Danny was sort of Pass averse "3 things happen when throwing the ball and 2 are bad"
And if I remember correctly Danny was 33 when he took over.
Very Excited about 2023 and also very excited to watch Cade & CV develop

Oh great, this guy's playbook is smaller than Streeter's. I can already tell, it's going to be sooo predictable. I'm going to be able to guess every play, after the play. We're in big trouble. What was Dabo thinking?!
