That's the biggie with "retirement" - we assume we will not run into any major health issues and will make it to that time/age in the future.
The BETTER plan is to get rich to the point your passive income is greater than your burn. Then you work if you want to, not because you have to.
I'd love to reach that goal within the next 10 years.

that is all you are depending on for retirement. I did my mom's taxes last year and I was astonished at how little her State Retirement is. I mean, she spends very little and everything is paid off, so it isn't a big deal, but if that was it, it wouldn't be easy living.

unless I just can't physically or mentally do it any more.
If you enjoy what you do, you shouldn't ever want to stop doing it, especially if you get paid to do it. Sometimes retirement (lack of responsibility and purpose) is a premature death sentence, so be careful there.

work until they physically can't anymore. Then they sit on the couch all day and wait to die because that's all they are able to do.
I don't want to do that.
My grandfather retired and spent the rest of his life hunting, fishing, eating breakfast at Hardee's, whatever the #### he wanted to do for about 20 years until lung cancer got him.
That's my retirement goal.

and that's to some day shoot my age in a round of 18-hole Par 72 golf. Whether that's a 65 when I'm 65 or an 80 when I'm 80, I don't care about that specifically.
But what that means is I have to stay in good enough physical shape to play decent golf when I reach that point in life. If I can make that happen, everything else should take care of itself.

in life, something you cannot possibly even hope to do until you're well into in your 60's. To be that athletically agile at an advanced age is something everyone hopes for.
That's why it's a goal of mine.
I'm not sure what the mental equivalent to that would be, but something also worth striving towards.

He prob just goes because, well, that's what he wants to do.
You going to Hardee's everyday doesn't make you a war hero. It just means it's you...going to Hardee's, because somehow you think it makes you important.

However, I doubt I'll completely hang it all up because I really enjoy working and will probably still work as a consultant in some areas. I'd like to write more.
Ideally, my wife and I would like to buy a house directly on the beach (but also not have it fall into the ocean). We actually feel good about this being an attainable goal. We may prefer to move to a smaller beach community like Edisto or Pawleys instead of IOP or Sullivan's.
And I plan to still drink a lot and go on stupid golf cart cruises.

Little Cabin around Asheville
Sep 17, 2021, 9:38 AM
|
|
Your post got me thinking. This was the only house I could find in the Asheville area that was under $250,000:
https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/15-Border-St-Black-Mountain-NC-28711/5590503_zpid/
That said, there were a lot more options in the sub $350k range than I was expecting, as well as some affordable cabins further out from town.
Not hating, FBCoachSC® , I would also love to retire to the mountains one day. That day is a looooong way off for me though.

I was thinking Telluride, but IIRC (because we looked), you really need $5M to make it work.
Breck was a little easier with only needing $2M.

Found a great opportunity to leave after almost 40 years in EE with them. Took a temporary and part-time interim management position at a different company and helped with the transition once they selected a permanent hire.
Since then I hunt and fish only on weekdays, volunteer for several non-profit organizations, and work in the garden. And I became a little more active investor. I'm Beaufort so why would I move? Once COVID-19 restrictions are removed we'll travel again.

I don't really want to "retire"

sounds boring AF. I want to keep doing what I'm doing for about 20 years, then open a small design/build consultant shop and do a few projects a year.
my grand dad is one of the most successful people i've ever known. he worked until the day my family put him in a nursing home. granted, he blew a lot of money he made, but the ole boy was going into the office wheeling and dealing.
current goal is to be "financially independent" in 10-15 years

Forced partial retirement starts at 55 (15 years)

And then I can decide full between 60 and 65.
Will retire to the farmland in either Hendersonville or Etowah, NC.
Really want to build a house on a hillside bear the French Broad River with mountain views in Etowah, but by BIL might get that land first.

All shareholders are forced to sell down their shares at 10% a year for 10 years starting the year of your 55th birthday.
This allows others and the company (if needed) to be able to comfortably purchase your shares without having a massive financial burden that cripples the company.

I've got a buddy who is a pilot.

He retired as a Major from the USAF reserves--had thousands of hours as C-141/C-17 pilot. He just turned 60. He flies for American Airlines now, and specifically has stayed as an aircraft commander (2nd in command) because he had seniority, and was flying to the Caribbean 4 days a week, or when he felt like it. He made his own schedule.
Then for some reason I don't understand, he went to Captains school last month, and is now a low seniority Captain flying terrible flights to Detroit, Las Vegas and other places I wouldn't want to go, on weekends and nights. He was probably making close to $225k-$250/year and had been for the last decade. Now, as captain, he said he'll make close to $300k/year-$325/year.
He is single, never been married, and has invested well. He has about $6 million liquid and in stocks, plus his USAF pension that starts at 62. He will also collect SS, and then at mandatory retirement of 65 from AA, he'll get a pretty hefty pension from them.
Last Macrh, He sold his new 25', twin engine center console for a ton less than he paid for it, and then sold his paid for house on IOP for $1.3m. After fees, taxes, and all the other stuff, he pocketed about $900k from the house. He had started dating a girl he went to high school with who was an admin asst at a Dr's office, and lives in Alpharetta now in her 1 BR apt with her.
He said he plans on buying a house on Lake Lanier, but the prices are scaring him off. I don't understand any of it. We've talked for hours about his plans, but none of them make any sense to me. I would never have gone to Captain school, lost my choice flying routes, and would have retired 5 years ago if I was him, enjoyed my IOP house until I couldn't anymore, then figure it out from there. I mean he certainly won't be going broke any time soon.

another 10 years of working and I can retire with a larger salary than I have now.
I'll work some as long as I am physically and mentally able to.

My passive income is more than I pay myself salary wise. All the profit goes to building more passive income.
I am what I would call an UDR. I am 39, make more from passive income... but mostly because we are pretty frugal. I looked and our outgo is about $4,000 a month... about 40% of that is tithing, giving and helping others.

I have fun doing what I do... I enjoy growing the business. My goal right now is to get out of the actual project work and just manage the day to day business.

Unfortunately, the financial advisor said our plan only had a 90% chance of success if we both lived to be 173. That planted a seed of doubt in half of our collective minds. We'll see what happens.
