Getting rid of Brownell won't matter, not this or next year
Mar 14, 2016, 6:40 AM
|
|
IF all Clemson does is go after another mid level 'up and comer' coach.
How did the Coots make themselves relevant in football?
They went out and hired Lou Holtz, a legendary coach. Did he succeed? Not particularly - EXCEPT people started paying attention to them, win or lose.
They followed it up with hiring another legend, Steve Spurrier. Did he succeed? Pretty much. He gave them their best 5 years in their history. Yes they crumbled at the end, but now they have a trend. They are hiring big name well known coaches.
Clemson is never going to be successful unless we can lure a coach here with a big enough name to draw talent IN SPITE of our history, facilities and support.

Curious if you used the "legend" argument on the Dabo hire.

before Dabo got here... so that makes YOUR argument irrelevant.
Clemson has never been ANYTHING in basketball.

We were not a Football power before the Dabo hire...
We had not been a football power since the early 90s.

Clemson has almost no track record of big name hires in any sport. Barnes and maybe Hatfield would be about the only exceptions there

Welp, you've got it figured out, the coots are indeed an example of what college athletics should be. This is one of the worst post I've read in 17 years of being on TN. Just think where we would be if we could have gotten the ball sac instead of Dabo. We are one of the best college football programs in the game. And according to about five or six services have the best coach in the nation. You remember, that receivers coach they promoted from obscurity. Pretty amazing that you think we should do what they do. I guess we need to get us some horseys and win some championships.

I would rather Clemson University shut down football than that donkey depression be the face of the university.

Your entire premise is shot in the #### after asking the question " How did the Coots make themselves RELEVANT in football " . They aren't , they never where , and they most likely never will be ? Is there somebody else we call the Coots ?

They had the most successful 5 year stretch in their history

under spurrier so for them very relevant... and people were talking about them nationally in a way they never had. For 5 years they won't more than ever and they OWNED Clemson... they even won a big game or two.
So yes, the Holtz and Spurrier hires made them relevant.
Take off the orange tinted glasses for a bit.

Holtz no , they were abysmal during his tenure . Spurrier , I will concede that for a few years they played pretty well but that has all gone back to normal now . Being relevant in my eye is longterm , sustained success and the ability to climb back easily when you are down for a while . They can't expect that because they have never been that , and in my estimation are among the least " relevant " football programs in the history of CFB .

Being the tallest midget in regards to their history still doesnt make them relevant...
ZERO Championships and tier two bowls dont make you relevant.

established program.
He didn't have to pull Clemson up from nothing, he had to put the right pieces in place (on the field and on the staff) and he has done amazing job.
But he didn't have to take a program with absolutely NO history, NO facilities, NO recruiting and turn it in to a powerhouse.
A basketball coach at Clemson will have to do all those things.

Dabo has come so far that it is borderline as impressive. You are correct though. He had the commitment from the university. Still, very few coaches could do what Dabo did imho. He is just special. I have found in my life that it is usually just the person. They figure it out. Some have it and some don't. That goes for any profession. I think you could give CBB Kentucky and within 4 years they wouldn't be a top 5-10 caliber team year in year out. Although, we all know Calipari is shady, so take that comparison with a grain of salt.

He took to a top 25 program and made it top 10.
I am not discounting his achievement at ALL.
Just saying you can't compare ANY coach taking over our football program to the coach who is going to have to CREATE our bball program from SCRATCH.

Clemson Football was not a top 25 program before Dabo took over....
We finished the year ranked 4 years of the 10 previous to him becoming HC.

That I can agree with you on , sir . Our BBall is not a flower . Its not even a small bud on a small branch . We need a guy that will come in prepared to outwork , outrecruit and out think just about any coach thats ever coached Clemson basketball .

We are in the ACC and that alone makes us a bud. I think we have he fans. I have seen LJ rocking with Barnes. We are Clemson. We have potential. It's not like we are talking FAU in college football.

I agree. We should have hired Tubby Smith when we had chance at Minnesota. He lives the south and would have come here. He is from High Point, NC. Now look what he is doing at Texas Tech.

then I'm sure we can count on an uproar from donors over the current state of the program. I'm sure we can count on many emails and phone calls from donors telling DRad and the administration how upset they are about our basketball performance. Change will be demanded because Clemson deserves better. Right?!?
I'm not holding my breath, because at the end of the day football rules at Clemson - to the point that it hurts our basketball program.
