Getting Close To The Date Dec. 29, 1978

That cost Ohio State Coach Woody Hayes his job.

I always remember how it was referred to in the days

immediately following. It was "The punch that the whole nation saw, but two announcers missed."

I think they were just dumbfounded, and couldn't believe what their eyes had just beheld. They had to know, right then, that it was the end of the Woody Hayes era. And, this was back in the days when legendary coaches went out on THEIR OWN terms for the most part.

Icon that Hayes was at Ohio State, he had gone into a late career decline, similar to what later happened to Bobby Bowden at FSU. It is possible that he would have been "asked" to retire after they lost that bowl game to us, even without the infamous punch. But, his boxing prowess against Charlie Bauman gave them a trump card to force his hand.

I remember when I saw that punch, I was not that surprised. Nothing Woody Hayes did or said surprised me. He was an arrogant old SOB and tough as nails.

I was at that game. It was my senior year at Clemson. Sitting in the end zone with many other students. Back then we did not have the big replay boards. We were unaware of woody punching Charlie until we went to eat at a Denny’s restaurant after the game. One of the people in the restaurant had watched the game and told us about the punch. It was a very exciting time to be there at the Gator Bowl. Back then the gator bowl was just one notch below the major bowls. And it was sweet revenge after we had been smashed by Pittsburgh the year before in the gator bowl and I was there for that one as well. Thanks for the memories!! Clemdoc79

Coots. We both got smashed by Pitt in the Gator Bowl. Matt Cavanaugh got us 34-3 in 1977, and Dan Marino smoked the Coots in George Rogers Heisman season of 1980, 37-9.

In fairness, that was the last straw for Woody...

I think Ohio State was already pretty fed-up with his abrasiveness and profanity-laced tirades.

Of course, Charlie Bowman was not the first person Hayes assaulted. In addition to hitting and cussing-out a number of his own players, he punched sportswriter, assaulted camera operators, and started a fight with the Iowa AD.

The man clearly had some anger management issues.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

Even now it seems as big as any game Clemson has played since .I was just a kid and to me it was like winning the Superbowl. After the final polls came out with Clemson ranked 6th in the AP I clearly remember me and my brother talking for the first time about Clemson being able to win a National Championship.

Read where Coach Ford was ready to send the Tigers to the locker room after the punch.

Head Ref. said to stay on the field and Clemson would walk of victorious in a few seconds after a run off the clock.

Great advise to a rookie coach in his first bowl game as a head coach. :)

By the way, Danny got a new Jaguar that was intended for Chuck Pell, but Chuck left for the Gator Swamp a few days earlier.

Chuck got the Gators on probation not to long after arriving in Gainesville.

I was a freshman in '79 and had a party at my parent's home in Delaware for the game. The partygoers were all pretty surprised at the turn of events.

I can't speak from personal experience but my roommate who walked on and played JV for the team said that if Woody was going to punch someone, Bowman was a good choice.
