On a more pleasant topic - love this weather - just

came out of the woods and didn't even need a jacket. Called up a coyote but he got around behind me and got my scent & I couldn't find him fast enough in the dark. Got a little tired of sitting there after that so I blew up an armadillo and came home. Much more relaxing evening than watching the Tigers lose again.

populations and DNR encourages getting rid of as many as possible. And the armadillo population is growing where they shouldn't be and dig up lawns and gardens - that is why it is legal to shoot both at night.

Yes on both. I had never seen an armadillo until I went to Florida out of Clemson in 1984. Now they have moved north along the coast into SC and are firmly entrenched in the low country. As for coyotes, they pack-hunt deer and pick off fawns, as well as mature deer. They take out foxes, dogs, and cats. If you are in the woods with a gun and see one, take it down. Not about to run out of them.

I got 2 the last couple of weeks of December and along with other people we saw coyotes 5 straight trips to the same ladder stand- saw more hogs and coyotes than deer the last month of deer season.

The dog running fox pens got them here so quickly. The fox pen owners bought them and put them in their pens so the dogs could run them. Naturally, many escaped the pens and started reproducing. DNR turned a blind eye to this practice and they must accept part of the responsibility. Coyotes will now be a part of out environment forever and the deer and turkey populations will begin to decline.

Doubt the coyotes do as much damage to the deer population as ***** hunters do. Why don’t you make it fair and wrestle grizzlies instead of hiding and blowing away innocent animals?

Where is here? I live in Wilmington and I haven't seen either. Last time I saw a coyote was in Florida before I moved here a little over a year ago. I haven't lived in the problem areas. That's why I asked.

South Carolina has the coyotes everywhere in large numbers - I have even seen them hit by cars inside towns.And the armadillos have been increasing since I saw the 1st one in Saluda County in the '90s. Another problem with those things is that they dig deep tunnels and two houses in my subdivision had tunnels start behind shrubbery against the houses and go down beside the foundations - one was my house so I have a deep hatred for those pests.

I have seen them in the morning a couple of times. I saw a couple walking in the morning last year. My Dachshund likes to jump in these bushes and snoop around like Dachshunds like to do. Anyway, he jumped in and a coyote jumped out and started trotting down the beach. I feel lucky it didn't mess my dog up. Then another time when I was walking down the beach in the morning, I saw a coyote digging away feasting on sea turtle eggs.

from the same deer stand during December - 3 times in early morning and twice in the afternoon well before dark. They are more active during darkness but I guess anytime they are hungry they will be on the move- especially when they have pups to feed. Workers at the Savannah nuclear facility did research with motion cameras on their dens and estimated that a large percentage of the fawns were brought to their young ( don't remember the exact % but maybe over 40% of that year's fawns).

Speaking of possums... where have they gone? We grew up with possums everywhere, now all you see are armadillos.

I am guessing the coyotes eat them..... but take a drive from Lexington toward Greenwood any night and they will be crossing the road (and many don't make it so your trip could be in the morning hours).

Kids today won't even know what a possum looks like. Seems strange to say that. We live in Lexington, and armadillos are everywhere.

We had a Mexican made when I was a teenager who killed a possum in my back yard, skinned it, and when I drove her her home she had the meat in plastic freezer bag on the floorboard as I drove her home. I guess some people think they are great. I guess it's not that rare. Actually, Shannon Sharp said that any wild animal that went through his yard when he was a kid was possibly a meal. They ate everything, squirrel, possum, raccoon. Kind of funny, because owns a swank restaurant in Los Angeles now. He has come a long way.

We ate a lot of squirrels growing up in the Lowcountry but never ate the possums or coons.
I heard coyotes a couple of times and saw lots of tracks while hunting near Pacolet this year but didn’t see any. Did see a couple of bobcats and a skunk. First time I’ve ever seen a skunk while I was deer hunting. Fortunately the pigs haven’t taken hold on that property yet. I used to hunt near Clinton and that place just got overrun with pigs. That’s a big part of why I moved to another spot.

One time, I had a skunk come under my tree not long before

dark and he wouldn't leave so I could come down. Heard my hunting buddy shoot so I needed to go help. Shot the skunk - went to the truck and met my buddy to help drag his deer and was told he had to shoot a skunk that wouldn't go away.

Crawled up inside the grill cover to get to the grease pan. He chewed the igniter wires on his way in. I could tell it was a possum because I've seen him on the deck before and he left some fur behind inside the grill. I called Weber to order a new igniter kit and they provided one free of charge. Evidently their warranty covers possum damage.

Coyotes are a huge problem. They are essentially everywhere and expanding their range. I have a friend who lives in a very nice area in the Parkins Mill area of Greenville. His house backs up to a small creek near S Pleasantburg.
He heard coyotes yapping shortly after he moved in. He is pretty resourceful and studied trapping. He has already trapped and dispatched with a high powered air rifle 15 coyotes since Fall '21 behind his house which is a suburban area.
Dogs and cats in the area are breathing a little easier.
Man is an apex predator whether some believe it or not. People need to do their part to try to keep the coyote numbers at least stable as the coyote in this area have no other predators.
