Georgia RB commit

Jan 27, 2022, 9:03 PM

Jordan James is getting a bunch of crystal balls flipping to Oregon.

Don’t surprised if this means Andrew Paul is heading to Georgia.

Looks increasingly more like Spiller will finish 0-4 with RBs in his first year. Yikes.

Could that be bc of no experience in recruiting college age kids, or could it be just bad luck in CJ's first year of recruiting??? Don't take what I say the wrong way bc, CJ Spiller is my most favorite Clemson player of the past. And his #28 has been riding on the front fender of my custom Harley since CJ's senior year at Clemson, and it's still there today. I'm just saying that CJ has no coaching experience, but his talent will help him get through his young coaching career, but I don't see it helping him in recruiting bc most young HS players only remember CJ's NFL career that didn't go even close to what most of us thought it would go, and I truly believe that it was bc of the team he was drafted to back then, and that was a terrible Bill's team where CJ got beat the H&11 up playing for!!!

Why must we seemingly always overlook the obvious

Jan 27, 2022, 9:37 PM

these guys want to play this year! These guys aren't playing here this year! We have a junior and two sophomores who are extremely good ahead of them. Unless they want to redshirt, or get a few meaningless snaps, why would they sign here this year?

If we do land Paul it's the recruiting job of the century, just like it would have been with ETN.

Which of our 4 and 5 star players would UGA have not taken? UGA, Clemson, Ohio State, Alabama, et al all go head to head for the top players regardless of what the Rivals or 247 offer sheet says. If a 5 star player truly doesn’t have an offer from a top program it’s because they know the commitment elsewhere is solid and don’t bother - but that’s no less losing than your idea of going “head to head”.

Andrew Paul wants to play early so that means going to Georgia over Clemson?

Seems reasonable. It's not like Georgia is loaded at RB. To be honest, I can't even think of any Georgia RBs that have had any impact in the NFL. We've sent 3 in the last decade (Ellington, Gallman, and Etienne). I seriously can't name a single RB in the NFL that went to Georgia. None. Zero.

Not sure how him going to UGA

Jan 27, 2022, 9:42 PM

correlates to Paul going to UGA. I’m sure as soon as the commitment was off with James and UGA - Lanning was on the phone. Also don’t know who went with Lanning to Oregon but that may be the trigger behind James heading there and the separation with UGA that sent them scrambling after Paul. UGA is still competing for a visit last I saw so seems they most likely will need to get to that next step first to become a battle. Not sure how this would have anything to do with Spiller. We’ve got a bunch of you guys so we may have to wait to next year befor the depth chart becomes attractive again. Meanwhile we would just RS Adams play him 4 games and hope injuries don’t hit.

We are deep deep into our board at DE which was a huge need for us. Also, we are about to lose our second RB target and sign a legacy there and at TE because we don't have numbers.

We whiffed on our top WR, DT, RB, CB, and Saftey targets.

You can pretend all you want but this recruiting cycle has been terrible for a team that as had so much success the last 10 years.

This class is exactly the same level as the classes that

... led up to our two recent national titles.

We have had a couple of better classes (on paper) more recently, but this current class is right in line with those classes that got us to the top.

And a lot of the players from this better classes are still with us.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Tell me the last time

Jan 30, 2022, 12:05 AM

we have had four legacy three-star recruits in the same class including a 200 lb DE in a HUGE position of need.

Compare our classes to Ohio State, Georgia, and Alabama this year.

You keep conveniently leaving out that we had a generational QB in those classes you mention.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Cade Klubnik is rated much higher than Watson ...

Jan 30, 2022, 12:29 AM

Watson only became what you deem a generational QB after he got to Clemson.

Why do you not feel that Klubnik is a “generational” QB (whatever the he!l that even means.) ? He’s the best QB in the country by consensus. Heck, DJ was a “generational” QB coming out of high school.

Why do you conveniently leave out that this class addresses numerous positions of need? Including the most important position by far.

All the pre-2019 Clemson classes had a bunch of 3-star recruits just like this year. We’ve always had a high percentage of 3-stars in any given class. What difference does it make if they are legacies or not. If they can mature and contribute, then they are worth a scholarship. Maybe only a third of them become contributors. If so, that’s enough.

And it is a FACT that we beat Alabama and Ohio State with players from classes that were heavy with 3-stars and ALL ranked outside the Top-10.

This is a very solid class. We may have had a couple of better ones just after winning the national title, but this one is nothing to be discouraged about. Especially since it is fortified with the continued presence of lots of great players from those two great classes.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Cade Klubnik is rated much higher than Watson ...

Jan 31, 2022, 12:27 PM

Cade has not even stepped on the field and you want to compare him to DeShaun or Trevor? Since rankings or offers don't matter then Cade's 5 stars tell us nothing, right?

Nothing against these four legacy recruits but they are one or two injuries away from seeing significant playing time in 2023.

It's not just the three stars, either. It's family members of players who were not offered by anyone of any significance. Other major programs work hard to scout kids too, you know.

I know one or two kids can fly under the radar but we are talking about a quarter of our class with project-type players. One is a 6' 200 lb DE. If you want to make a side bet that he will not be all ACC one day, I'll take it.

Like I said before, maybe it's just a huge coincidence and these four legacy kids are super-talented players that just got passed up and overlooked by all the major programs in the country. I mean I hope that's the case.

But don't sit here and tell me that several recruiting classes like this will get us in the title game beating the pants off of Georgia, Ohio State, or Alabama.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This is one class in isolation ... why do you assume

Feb 1, 2022, 11:16 AM

that we will have several in a row. I won’t simply leap to that conclusion.

But yes, several classes in a row like this one did indeed lead to us beating the pants off of Alabama and Ohio State.

We only got our Top-5 classes after the 44-16 beat down of Alabama. Before that, our classes looked very similar to this one.

And with two Top-5 classes in a row, we have subsequently *not* made it to the title game nor beaten Alabama or Ohio State.

Isn’t that weird?

Did Georgia decide to offer Andrew Paul because

Jan 28, 2022, 11:30 AM

they knew they were losing Jordan James, or did Jordan James leave because he knew Georgia was getting Andrew Paul.

I find it hard to believe that Andrew Paul would be the reason a Georgia kid would look elsewhere. Georgia is stacked at RB regardless.

My guess is UGA offering Andrew Paul is a desperation move by Georgia. They could use another RB, and he's the best out there.

With that said a UGA offer is hard to refuse given how well their RBs have fared. Maybe a desperation offer by UGA is going to be good enough.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't understand why people think Jordan James

Jan 28, 2022, 1:01 PM

is leaving UGA because they got Andrew Paul. I can't find a single rating that says Andrew Paul is above Jordan James. Jordan James wouldn't go to UGA because he was worried about competition.

To me, it makes a lot more sense that Andrew Paul was offered...A WEEK AGO...because they got signaling from Jordan James that he probably isn't coming to Athens. Now...whether or not Andrew Paul goes there I have no idea, but I don't see how people think a higher-rated RB is running for the hills because he found out Andrew Paul is coming. Plus, am I missing something or does UGA already also have Branson Robinson, a still higher-rated RB, already committed.

Like I said, I don't know where Andrew Paul will go and I'm not losing sleep over this stuff one way or the other. There are just too many variables that go into this now. Culture...development...playing time...atmosphere...the ability to win championships...NIL packages...and it can all shift in a year anyway. I just think the hand wringing is odd that they must have landed Paul and that's why James said goodbye.

James going somewhere else is the reason Georgia wants Paul, but Paul to Georgia has nothing to do with James leaving. I still believe Clemson wins this one.

Jordan James is ranked higher than Paul. Why would he base what he does on Andrew Paul?

Even if we miss on Paul, I wouldn't see it as a knock on CJ. It can't be easy looking at Mafah and Shipley, only 1 class ahead of you and Pace just 2 classes ahead and thinking that is where I want to go. Any RB from this year was/is only looking at getting significant playing time their senior year.

Re: Georgia RB commit

Jan 29, 2022, 9:24 AM

The fact that he's supposedly "0-4" in his first year (per you) has a LOT more to do with our depth chart than it does with Spiller's ability to recruit. Next year is the year I would expect Spiller to land a premier RB.

Re: Exactly.

Jan 29, 2022, 1:50 PM

I want to make sure I understand the logic.

When RBs don’t choose Clemson, it’s because they are afraid of the competition.

But, if Paul chooses UGA, then he chooses a team that has

Kenny McIntosh, 11 RB, 187
Kendall Milton, 7 RB, 54
Daijun Edwards, 21 RB, 279
Branson Robinson, 4 RB, 61

When Emmanuel Henderson chose Bama over Clemson, he chose to compete against

Trey Sanders, 1 RB, 6
Jace McClellan, 6 RB, 47
Roydell Williams, 9 RB, 77
Camar Wheaton, 3 RB, 34

Right, that makes perfect sense.

No one thought ETN would stay all 4. Potential recruits not only look at who is in front of them, but what is their remaining eligibility. For this class I've always thought we'd wind up with a Michael Dukes type. Adams would fit that bill. Next year would be the more likely year for a stud RB. So, you have a choice; either continue to recruit that deep depth with highly rated guys like Georgia and Bama and have a revolving door, or recruit some developmental kids who know they are several years from playing and possibly find that diamond in the rough. We've been very good at finding those diamonds in the rough, who also provide the culture we are seeking to maintain.

Or maybe the actual point should be we are all Clemson fans who want every great recruit. We have a staff that have competed at the highest level with less talent and have delivered on some incredible recruits. Let’s see how it plays out before we write off anything about what got us this far. That’s probably buried in FM’s point too.

Re: Their theory works in a vacuum, but when you see how

Jan 29, 2022, 3:16 PM

That’s my point. Alabama and Georgia are stacked at RB every year. Multiple dudes that will be high draft picks and have long careers in the NFL. We are losing RB recruits to programs with elite talent in their RB room.

And I believe we have elite talent as well. I love Shipley, Pace, and Mafah. But I can’t pretend like RBs choosing Bama and UGA over Clemson is simply because they don’t want to compete against our guys. Those teams are just as loaded as we are.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Georgia and still even Bama, for that matter, are

Jan 29, 2022, 3:35 PM

run heavy offenses. Yes, Bama has adopted RPO and the mobile QB aspect, but both rely more heavily on a stable of backs whereas Clemson is more balanced. Probably affects recruits decisions beyond the bevy of lies and greased palms inherent to their recruiting process.

I hope Andrew Paul commits to us over Georgia.

But, if he doesn’t, I can’t help but to view that as an indictment on Spiller’s ability to recruit. Maybe he just needed more time to develop the relationships and he’ll land a big time RB for 23’

LT - some good back and forth but I’m not reading about the tremendous advantage Bama and UGA have had at OL over the last decade.

The OL is the difference maker in recruiting and power running game. Clemson OL showed some improvement through 2021, and hopefully, Clemson’s younger higher rated OL recruits will get in the rotation this year.

I really wasn't expecting to land another big time RB for another year or 2. Its a hard sell on PT when you have Pace, Shipley and Mafah on the depth chart all being just Sophs or Jr. I'd love to get Paul tho, a big bowling ball type back, reminds me of Adam Choice. He'd get his carries in due time.
