Georgia matchup

Jul 15, 2021, 11:58 AM

What is your take on Clemson vs Georgia positional matchups?
One of Georgia’s perceived preseason weaknesses was its secondary. However, that was before they went to the portal and picked up the likes of Kendrick (who will likely play on Sundays).

One of Clemson’s perceived preseason weaknesses is the O-Line. However, we bring back many players that gained a year of experience/strength, and also add in the O-line commits from the very good 2020 class.

All in all, I give the edge to Clemson. Both D-lines are talented, but the tigers have more proven depth. Throw in an improved LB Corp, and this counters what many believe is a powerful Georgia run game.
Additionally, despite losing Kendrick, I see an improved secondary as talented commits have developed and better understand Coach V’s schemes.
Simpson may be the game changer.

Your thoughts?

Still gotta see someone separate themselves in our WR corp

Jul 15, 2021, 12:11 PM

last year was miserable until Cornell Powell decided to finally show up. WE have all this potential at WR. 5 stars galore. There is absolutely no excuse to not have 3 all ACC WR's. Ngata (haven't seen anything from him), Ladsen (where's he been?), Ross (hasn't been cleared to play and if he does will be double teamed and hit hard). EJ Williams is probably better than all of them b/c of his effort.

But the fact that we struggled to have a legit passing attack last year was puzzling. Was renfrow really the reason we had success in the passing game in previous years? WE couldn't move the ball on OSU consistently (not like they were doing to us) and it just seemed clunky. Jeff Scott..is he done at South Florida yet? Get him back. WE should be killing people in teh passing game. I watch other teams and it looks way more fluid than ours. What is that? Can't all be O-line.

I have also wondered if Ross will be able to go full throttle in the first game. I’m sure he has been working hard to be ready.

Cornell Powell didn't alll of a sudden "decide" to show up. It just took him longer to develop, like a lot of players we have had. I guess you didn't know that Ngata and Ladson were injured for the majority of the season. So last year was not puzzling. There was good reason and we were still very good at receiver. You do understand that a good running game makes the passing game better.

Despite the limitations at O-line and WR, I agree that our offensive scheme and play calling needs some tweaking. LSU (in 2019) set a new standard and Bama, Oklahoma, and OSU have adapted to it offensively. I don’t think we have.

I think that it will come down to QB play. DJ has great potential as we all know but will he be able to consistently make first downs and keep the drives alive against a tough Georgia defense - that to me is the most important question.

Re: Georgia matchup

I see the key to this game coming down to our Tiger defense shutting down that powerful Georgia run game. If we can make them one dimensional and keep them from controlling ghe ball and clock we will win. Our offense is much more explosive than theirs. Thry cannot go point for point with us. Their best receiver is out. Daniels looked great against mediocre defenses. This Tiger defense is far from mediocre. This will be a great game folks. What a way to start the season. Go Tigers!!!!!

Trick plays

Jul 15, 2021, 5:13 PM

It may come down to who has the better trick play(s) in their book.

After a layoff like this, I'll put my money on Clemson's trick play plan every time. We need the W.

Always.

Again, I said it COULD. I still have Clemson winning (& big), if that helps.

But if you're asking if I'm serious about trickeration, absolutely. UGA has tried it plenty, & it's worked well for us, arguably better (albeit much more rare).

by trick plays...do you mean something like a successful fake punt?

If so, I'd go with Clemson as well.

Re: Georgia matchup

Jul 15, 2021, 5:49 PM

My take is like most first games, mistakes, turnovers, and stupid penalties will play a "too large" role.

Media gives UGA a huge plus on the talent side, but we know that is wrong.

Unit against unit (on paper) is similar as finding any weakness on either team is just nit picking.

Most of my Tiger friends are eager to line up. Most of my UGA friends can't sleep at night.
That is due to our coaches vs theirs.

I’m definitely not confident about these matchups - too many uncertainties.

*Our unproven wide receiving corps versus their unproven revamped secondary

* conversely, they are unproven wide receiving corps versus our veteran secondary that was absolutely torched the last time we saw them

* most importantly, I don’t have any compelling reason to think our office of line will be better with a new left tackle (3-star replacing 5-star) and center (3-star replacing 2/3-star) versus their outstanding D-line

All that said, I think our D-line should be even more outstanding and our LBs should be solid, maybe even spectacular. I believe we have a better QB, and that might be enough in this very even matchup.

You're right, there are some uncertainties (as there are with just about any team any season). But I am a bit curious as to why you say our WR corps is "unproven". Despite the loss of Pickens, we still return 5 of our top 6 pass catchers from last season, which includes 2 Srs - one of whom was our leading receiver, a Jr, and a couple of highly touted Sophs.
We do have some newcomers, but they will have to leap over some productive guys to see the field.

Re: Georgia matchup

The game determining matchups will be as follows:

- How well does Clemson's interior OL handle UGA's interior DL of Jordan Davis, Jalen Carter, and Devonte Wyatt? This could be a big mismatch.

- How well does UGA's yet to be determined LT handle Myles Murphy? This could also be a big mismatch.

- How well do UGA's OGs handle Bresee and Davis? Both the UGA OGs and Clemson DTs have All-American potential. Should be quite the battle.

- How well do UGA's CBs play with little to no game experience in Smart/Lanning's scheme? Athletically they can hang with Clemson's WRs, but what about mental errors due to inexperience?

- Will Justyn Ross be 100% from game one? If so, his matchup with incoming transfer Tykee Smith will be one to watch.

- Can UGA keep JT Daniels clean in the pocket more often than not? His mobility within the pocket is OK, but he does need to do a better job of not letting pressure turn into sacks.

- Can UGA get DJU to the ground when under pressure? He gets rid of the ball quickly and is tough to bring down with his size and mobility.

Re: Georgia matchup

Jul 16, 2021, 10:54 PM

Georgia’s strength is playing run defense. They’re talented up front but not necessarily deep. It looks like they’ll use a 3-4 alignment in order to shift resources to the back end and shore up their pass defense. The two DB transfers they got will help a lot but don’t kid yourself, they went into the transfer portal for a reason.

I think Clemson will attack that secondary, it’s the smart thing to do. Between Ross, Ngata, Ladson, the Collins twins, Ajou Ajou and 3 very good tight ends we have more than enough frisbee catching dogs to overload them there.

On offense they appear to have a good QB though he has yet to distinguish himself. I was listening to some SEC homers on ESPNU radio today talking about him. They mentioned how Georgia got their offense on track the final four games of last season when JT Daniels became the starter. ……So I looked up those last four games…..

Won 31-24 verses Mississippi State

Won 45-16 verses South Carolina

Won 49-14 verses Missouri

Won 24-21 verses Cincinnati

……Color me not impressed. BTW, they gave up 41 points to Bama and 44 points to Florida.

I think we are better and deeper on the defensive line. Brent Venables has everyone back and an eternity to prepare a game plan. He’s the best there is at bringing pressure, this will be new territory tor JT Daniels. …….Oh, and there’s no George Pickens to throw it to.

I’m sure the Dawgs have other receivers but they aren’t loaded with experience there. Their offensive line isn’t anything to write home about, I see them having a hard time with Tyler Davis, Bryan Bresee, and the speed off the edge we’ll bring.

They can run their mouths but they won’t be running the ball.

Re: Georgia matchup

Of course UGA's strength on the defensive side is against the run and you don't have to be an offensive coordinator to know Clemson will attack the secondary. Same for Clemson. Did you see the Clemson secondary vs. Ohio State? You don't think Monken is devising a scheme to isolate Turner and get Skalski into coverage on someone like James Cook?

I'm not sold on JT Daniels being the next great QB but the same could be said for DJ Whathisname. All this praise over a game with ND in which he had to throw the ball every play because Clemson ran for a whopping 34 yards. You'd expect he'd have a lot of yardage.

You can rattle off opponents UGA beat and I can do the same for Clemson - Wake, The Citadel, Syracuse.

Unfortunately Monken has neither Chris Olave or Garrett Wilson. Kendrick will be appreciative of that. But the bigger issue is that after two years a fundamental problem has been completely rectified.

The last two years we’ve had a deficiency in size and athleticism on the defensive line. Brent Venables masked it by going to a 3-4 in 2019 and back to a 4-3 last year with two true freshmen and other underclassmen manning those positions. In the last two years he’s been forced to blitz often just to get pressure on the passer as well as stop the run. Dedicating backside help to the front put undue pressure on the secondary.

Once again Clemson’s D-line will resemble the one you saw two years ago. The one that shut down Alabama’s run game and pressured Tua to the point he had to be lifted in the 3rd quarter.

This Clemson front seven is that good. I get it, Georgia is a ###### good running team. But Clemson has an answer for them. Can you say the same about Georgia’s secondary regarding matching up with all the frisbee catching dogs Clemson has ?

Re: Georgia matchup

Jul 18, 2021, 6:41 AM

Which frisbee be catching receivers are you referring to? The two - Powell and Rogers - who were in the top 100 in the nation and are now in the NFL? Ross, who everyone hopes is healthy enough to suit up?

Hasn't Clemson recruited lights out on the d-line? How do they wind up with linemen so physically and athletically deficient that BV has to mask it with a scheme at allows 5.8 yards per carry in a playoff game? Has Dabo missed on recruiting...failed to develop?

My biggest concern is Uiagalelei's ability to extend plays and hit the big one. Neither QB has seen the level of defense the other team will bring.

Re: Georgia matchup

Jul 17, 2021, 7:24 PM [ in reply to Re: Georgia matchup ]

There are some inaccuracies in your post:

- The Dawgs aggressively rotate in the front seven ever since Kirby took over, and that has created a ton of talented, experienced depth up front. With the return of Davis for his SR year and Wyatt for his super SR year the Dawgs have more experienced depth up front than just about any team in the nation.

- You won't be seeing much of a 3-4 alignment unless Clemson is trotting out a bunch of 12 personnel on the reg which we both know isn't likely. Against Clemson's typical 11 personnel you'll see UGA in their base nickel set with 4 guys with their hand in the dirt.

- While I agree Kendrick was in the "transfer portal for a reason", that logic actually doesn't apply to Tykee Smith. He transferred to reunite with former WVU position coach Jahmile Addae, who was hired by Georgia this offseason. All signs point to Tykee having a big year.
