Geoff Collins. It's now a matter of "when" and not "if"....

Sep 19, 2022, 3:13 PM

Against our previous 4 Power 5 opponents, we've lost 183-10.

Ole Miss was favored, and I knew they'd win. I thought maybe we'd be in a better position to compete and not lose by 42-0, perhaps keeping it closer. I was wrong.

We've now had 3 punts blocked this year already (Collins is heavily involved in our special teams).

Timeouts continue to be mis-managed.

And we keep losing big. We did beat Western Carolina - a big comeback win after falling behind early and being outgained during the overall game.

The next two games are at UCF and at Pitt. We'll get crushed in those two games.

"when"....not "if"....

The only thing going for GT is that Collins has not made the whole university a media spectacle and PR nightmare.... but Ol Miss just scored another touchdown.

Y'all should give Paul Johnson a call.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He'd better better than Collins, but he's retired....

Sep 19, 2022, 3:35 PM

He left on his own terms. We didn't fire him or force him to resign. He was ready to retire, and stepped out at the end of 2018 by his own decision.

And changes have been made to the blocking rules since he left. So, his brand of offense would have a harder time in today's game than a few years back.

The head-scratching decisions are building.

Sep 19, 2022, 3:36 PM

I don’t get it.

Sep 19, 2022, 3:38 PM

What would be head-scratching about sending Collins packing? He's 10-27, and the performance is getting worse, not better. Fan support is at the lowest it's been maybe ever.

The thing that would be head-scratching would be allowing this guy to stay on into 2023.

Re: The head-scratching decisions are building.

Sep 19, 2022, 3:45 PM

Yeah, the new Duke coach in three (cupcake) games has already matched the number of wins Collins had had in any season.

GT is in a tough spot but 4 years of 3 or less wins is something that even UVA stuggles with

Re: The head-scratching decisions are building.

Sep 19, 2022, 3:51 PM

Well, we've scheduled a few cupcakes during Collins' time, and lost them.

Citadel beat us. Northern Illinois beat us.

We did get over the hump with WCU the other day. yay!

Sep 19, 2022, 3:59 PM

Oh, OK. Got it.

Yes, his game management from the sidelines is sub-standard to say the least.

I'm completely done with Collins, as is 95% of the fanbase. We gave him a chance to show a pulse. We knew his rebuild from the CPJ era was going to be tough. But the mistakes & mismanagement of the program that I see aren't due to "the rebuild". They're due to a coach who is in over his head.

And he's "lost" the team, too. THe players have checked out and they're not even giving a full effort. Time for a change.

Let's just cut our losses and be done with it.

It's not just the coach. There is no commitment at GT to football. Facilities are terrible. A lot more than just a coach has to change.

That's the best name for that job I've heard yet.

No up and comer wants to be saddled with what Ga Tech's support and infrastructure offers in terms of career trajectory, but Frost is someone who's fallen off the mountain and is looking for footing. He's a decent coach, and Atlanta may offer an environment more similar to an Orlando than what he could do in Lincoln, Nebraska.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yup. No way he was going to turn this around this year

Sep 19, 2022, 3:44 PM

There was always going to be a 3-year coach that would fail and be fired. And like it was said above, he’s probably improved the brand more than he’s damaged it.

I’d be poking that ODU coach early if I was them. Came from Penn State (Franklin tree); so he is a better representative of Franklin’s success than VT’s guy (defense). He might just need a better brand to sell.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I feel like you guys could’ve gotten a better coach.

Sep 19, 2022, 3:58 PM

Don’t get me wrong, Collins has been coaching for nearly 30 years, and did a nice job at Temple.

But I think Georgia Tech can be really good at football, as evidenced by significant success in the past. There is no reason why winning 7-8 games a year can’t be the minimum achievement. Collins doesn’t seem likely to get you there.

Sep 19, 2022, 4:10 PM

As best I can tell, as a head coach, he's all gimmicks and no substance. He dresses up a certain way. He talks about the "404" and "the ATL". He has instituted the "Money Down". He acts like a goof on the sidelines. It's all fluff and no substance.

His time as an assistant might have been good. But it didn't carry over to his current job.

We've seen enough.

Nah, that was from 2020....

Sep 19, 2022, 5:04 PM

Not really sure what it was about. I think CGC was being a jerk after their game in 2020.

I'd love to have a hard-nosed guy like Narduzzi coaching at Tech.

Our next coach needs to be someone that's all about recruiting, developing, and coaching. We'll leave the marketing to someone else.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sadly,

Sep 19, 2022, 5:18 PM [ in reply to Re: I feel like you guys could’ve gotten a better coach. ]

I hate to say it Smitty, but I thought his actions early on were a joke and was a warning sign during the first few weeks/months of his tenure.

I felt like sooo much of his effort was going into marketing and branding, and almost nothing around coaching and recruiting. I felt he talked a (decent) game, but behind the words, there were his actions....and they all seemed like an act.

It was almost like he went into this job thinking there was an image problem and tried way too hard to speak about things players didn't care about. Seriously, what players are buying into "Waffle House", "404". No players are picking GT b/c of Waffle House food and an area code.

Add on the acts of not releasing depth charts, or lifting weights before away games and it was just about laughable.

Lastly, I know one of the former strength coaches at GT who was let go when he came in. For the 2 weeks after he was hired, while GT prepped for their bowl game, he was around the facilities. My friend told me, in just the few interactions he had, he said "he won't last but 3-4 years. Tops". Said his interactions with him spoke volumes about his character.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This is a great point you made.

Sep 19, 2022, 10:17 PM

Marketing is important, but it doesn’t trump the football aspect.

Georgia Tech football is a sleeping giant. They are in a great state for recruiting and the location appeals to a lot of players. They just don’t currently have a reputation for developing players to play at the next level. And that’s ultimately what they need to become.

They need to update their facilities and get a coach who can inspire young men. If he can recruit, he will be successful. That doesn’t seem to be Collins.

If Tech is serious about football, they would make it a lot easier on themselves by creating a few athlete majors. All football powers, including Clemson, has them. GT isn’t any harder that other ACC schools for athletes to get into, the problem is that they have mostly science/technical majors and that scares people off. If you’re going to college for football more than to get an education, the idea of an engineering or science degree is super unappealing and that hurts the Jackets on the recruiting trail.

Re: Collins thought that ATLANTA was the key....

Sep 23, 2022, 4:21 PM [ in reply to Sadly, ]

Atlanta is a very popular city in the African-American community. It's extremely diverse, and has some hip-hop culture, alone with other cultures.

I think Collins thought that he could sell and market "the ATL", and everything else would follow.

I immediately thought Collins was a clown when I saw him, and heard him speak. And when I saw his top assistants, who were nobody, I figured he was going to crash and burn.

However, I quietly gave him two years with no outward criticism. I knew the rebuild from the CPJ era would be tough, and the Covid year was a wildcard. But by last year, it became clear that he wasn't the guy, especially when we ended the season with back-to-back shutouts against ND & UGA. It's hard to get shut out, but we've managed to do it in 3 games out of our last 5. The players have given up on him, and so have the fans.

The only question at this point is "when", not "if".

Then, after Collins is gone, our admin has to decide the direction they want the program to take in the future.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And the 10 came against Clemson.

Sep 19, 2022, 4:28 PM

Sep 19, 2022, 5:02 PM

The fact that we scored on Clemson, and not on ND, UGA, or Ole Miss....that should be a wake-up call to your defense. LOL.

I didn't even think about it in those respects.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not to worry, we’ve had injuries and our DCs are still learning.

Sep 19, 2022, 10:20 PM [ in reply to And the 10 came against Clemson. ]

Plus, the coaches are purposely holding back so they don’t give away our secrets.

This weekend against Wake, it will all come together and we will be the best defense in the history of college football.

Its all about recruiting when you're in your position

Sep 20, 2022, 10:39 AM

How hard is it to recruit kids to Hotlanta? If ya'll could figure a way to get Neon Deion to Atlanta you're team would get better pretty quickly. But scheme or success at a mid major type coach is a tall task. The reason Dabo became coach at Clemson is because he was the number 1 recruiter in the country.. well thats not the only reason but was a huge factor. He was probably headed to Bama next to be on staff. But we reeled him back in quickly and gave him a shot and he did BIG things. I'd say GT needs to capitalize on the hip hop culture and urban entrepreneurship of Atlanta (the NIL money could be huge if they did partner somehow with the big wigs in ATlanta) and you'll see the team pick up real recruits. You guys have some good players but you gotta have multiple good players.
